Corsairs Silentium
Screw Subtlety.

Woodenbattleship.JPG

The Corsairs Silentium are relatively new on the piracy scene, though they have many of their roots in some of the most historic pirate groups in the galaxy, one of the captains was once a pirate under the banner of the Exchange, and the other, well, he is known to be a distant descendant of the infamous Lorell Raiders. The Corsairs were founded in 1023 ABY with the fall of the Exchange. When the Exchange crumbled under the weight of internal politics and a laissez faire command structure, one of the more prominent members was able to break away from the financial debt he owed to the Compere, and made his way towards the southern Outer Rim, slowly reaving his way away from the Exchange and it's territory. Halisstrad was his name, and he was the captain of a rather unique Warship, a modified Y-Head corvette, the Elysium, which was slowly gaining a reputation for show and flashy attacks in the region. This in turn, attracted the attention of other pirates, namely a lesser known captain, with a small reputation for insanely daring stunts and being, well, actually insane.

It would take weeks before the two would actually meet, finding mutual cause in rescuing one another from a trap sprung by local system defense fleets. The two men fought their way out from the situation and were actually able to turn a profit, stealing a Justice-class corvette in the process. Of course, the men had no idea what to do with them, and they began to seek out a safe haven for them to lay low and build up a crew for their ship. To do this, they landed on the planet Kabal, exploring the various settlements and islands by boat. This was an important time for them, as the two men bickered, argued, and fought their way about the planet, seeking fame, fortune, women, and adventure as they did so.

As they neared the end of their voyage, they made their way towards Port Vhork, a small sea town, towards the equator of Kabal. The town had been named long ago by a group of Hapans who had settled there, seeking isolation and escape from the reavers who had once controlled the seas of Kabal. It was in Port Vhork that the two heard rumors of a ship, an ancient wooden ship, that had crashed there thousands of years ago. It had once been a ship which had sailed the stars above, making her way throughout the silence of space. She had crashed on the planet, finally felled by the sith, and finding her grave in one of the many deep lagoons that could be found in the equatorial island chains.

The pair of men were intrigued, and they set off on their search, looking for the ancient ship and the glorious treasure it surely held. They searched for months, and their travels are the source of many a drunken night's entertainment in Port Vhork and all across the islands of Kabal. When they found the ship, at long last, they were, tired, nearly destitute and certainly unable to salvage it. It was then that the men made their way back out into the stars, and set off to recruit crews. The first ship that they manned completely was the Justice-class Corvette, and soon, they had stolen, through ingenuity, skill, and just a little bit of craziness, a second. It was at this point that the two men separated, with Halisstrad remaining out amongst the stars, raiding convoys and stealing all that he could, while Isoldor returned to Kabal, setting up their new base in Port Vhork.

As they continued to operate and to salvage their prize, they attracted more and more men and women to their fleet, these new arrivals helped Port Vhork to grow, and brought more merchants into the town. It took a month of back breaking labor, hundreds of strong men, in excellent physical condition from years of raiding and fighting, but they salvaged her, working to fix the once grand ship to her former glory. Even now, the Fairwind is not yet complete, though she is as effective as ever.

Beliefs
The Corsairs are a diverse lot of people, born to all walks of life, however it takes a common cause, and a common belief system to keep them together. This code is kept simple in order to avoid infringing on the rights of captains to run their ships how they like. The code is as follows:

  1. The Corsairs always get a cut.
  2. Do not steal from your fellow Corsairs.
  3. Mutiny is punished by death... if it fails.
  4. Do not kill hostages once you have a ransom.
  5. The Captain's law only applies aboard his ship.
  6. The Captain's Table may ammend the laws at any time as it sees fit.
  7. If you take a job, you finish it.

Beyond this code, the rules aboard every ship in the fleet are left up to the captain of said ship, after all, the captain is the one who knows the crew best and how to control them and keep them in line. After all, with a bunch of bloodthirsty, greedy, pirates, strict control is often needed. These codes also extend to any time spent on shore at Port Vhork, as well as assorted rules created to protect the inhabitants of the town and their trade which is valuable for the Corsairs as well.
Organization
The group has a simple organization, each corvette and frigate captain has a seat at the Captains' Table, where the plan for the fleet as a whole is discussed, other than that, captains are allowed to structure their ships how they wish. The ultimate say as to policy lies with the Fleet's Admiral, Halisstrad.

Though the Corsairs Silentium have but a brief history of violence and pillaging, there have been certain events in recent years that have been worthy of noting here. As work progressed on the salvage of the Fairwind, and the number of prizes which were taken from successful raids grew, more and more people began to sign up. This, of course, led to a variety of styles in tactics amongst the fleet. Some prefered to use deception, and this tactic is often very popular with the smaller crews, whose freighters may be well armed, but can obviously not take on capital ships. Others began to use more direct tactics, especially the captains who commanded the larger capital ships. As such, many captains tend to work with others of a similar mindset, though, on occasion, the successful combination of both general styles has led to large rewards, including the successful acquisition of a Chiss Patrol Frigate. The operation that netted that ship is considered to be one of the most successful in the history of the entire fleet, despite the losses in manpower and ships, including over 20 freighters and double that amount in fighters.

Port Vhork

header_port_royale_3_pirates_and_merchants.jpg

Named after the large bird from the Hapes Cluster, Port Vhork is the spiritual, if not physical, home of the Corsairs Silentium. The port itself is slowly growing as the pirates who make it their home grow bolder and more successful every day. With each successful raid, they bring back prizes in the form of gold, slaves, weapons, and other valuables. This loot is typically sold to the merchants in Port Vhork, in return for credits and other more useful supplies, like weapons, armor and booze. The town currently consists of no more than 30 buildings, including weapons shops, tailors, armorers, a brother, and of course, 5 taverns, with the rest of the island being a large forest, much like the rest of Kabal. All along the island's beach, various boats of all different makes can be found and used by pirates while they are ashore. Many of the pirates have been known to take out boats and raid other settlements on the planet while drunk from a night out in the port. Most of these pirates do not return, either lost at sea, or captured by the authorities, the few who do survive, come back with ships laden with riches and supplies, these men and women are typically promoted to officer ranks aboard their respective ships, in recognition of their skill, and often foolhardy daring.

Ships, and Their Crews

((OOC Note: This section is to be filled with the profiles written by players which describe their individual ships and their crews.))

The Fairwind
By Srota

Woodenbattleship.JPG

To begin with the flagship of the Corsairs is the recovered and restored wreck of the Fairwind, a ship originally used by master Valenthine Farfalla as a part of the Army of Light during the time of Darth Bane. Lost for thousands upon thousands of years it was recently discovered and upgraded by the main fleet of the raiders while they searched out a wide variety of planets to make their home on. The ship itself is made of Wryoshr timbers and reinforced with durasteel supports within, modern shield generators and electrical systems had been installed by the raiders of the course of months of work on their renovations and improvements. Though the internal systems have been made as state-of-the-art as possible by the pirates, there is only so much that can be done by pirates working with stolen parts, and much of the ship is characterized by dim, flickering, lights and a distinct lack of comfort in terms of the sleeping arrangements. The ultimate goal is, of course, to get the ship back to full fighting power and her systems upgraded to something more formidable on a ship of her size than just her standard nine double laser canons. Additionally, upgrades have been planned to allow easier and more dramatic boardings for the intrepid pirate crew.

Pirates_Pub_Redux_by_CapnFlynn.jpg

The Crew on break
The culture aboard that of the Fairwind is much different than aboard any of the other ships in the fleet, characterized by anachronism, much of the attitudes of the crew are lighthearted, and ancient shanties can be heard throughout the halls as the men and women of the crew go about their work. Another important feature of the Fairwind and the culture aboard her, is alcohol. Like with most pirates, alcohol features prominently aboard the ship, and in the galley, there are large stocks of rum and other assorted stolen alcohols. This stock is ever changing as the thirsty sailors end their watches with drinking and singing and a raucous good time. The crew has an easy comradery with one another aboard this ship, and though proper respect is shown to the Captain and the Officers, they are certainly separated from the crew in terms of their demeanor. The officers and captain are more serious when out amongst the crew as a whole, however, as is often the case, they seem to get along well with one another, and often the sounds of laughter can be heard from the officer's mess as they recall past glories or plot new hauls.

c2a167628d15f06d.jpg

A Typical Crewman of the Fairwind
The Crew of the Fairwind is typically found wearing very anachronistic clothes which provide no real armor whatsoever, preferring to rely on their superior numbers and increased agility to win the day, as the Fairwind typically houses over 300 pirates. Most are armed simply, relying on the standard DL-44 heavy blaster pistol as a ranged weapon and a cutlass or other short blade for close in work. Many variations on this loadout can be found throughout the ship, some of the more notable being a large man who carries around a Z-6 Rotating Blaster Cannon around as easily as it were an EE-3 blaster carbine, to the various men and women of the crew who carry no ranged weaponry in favor of a multitude of blades, such as knives, dirks, cutlasses, and even pikes.

There are few rules aboard the ship, most of which are quite obvious, "The Captain has the final say," is of course, the most prominent, though others include rules on the dividing up of spoils (which is done by rank, the crew gets 1/3rd, officers get 1/3rd, and the captain gets 1/3rd), rules governing intra-crew conflict (Fight all you want, just don't kill one another too much,or attack officers or the captain), rape and other attacks against women and children, although permitted, are generally frowned upon by the majority of the crew, and finally, those who don't pull their weight aboard the ship will be thrown out the air locker.

Notable Crew of the Fairwind

Sammy Byron

Full Name: Samuel Byron

Sammy is the first mate of the Fairwind, a man of boyish charm that seems at odds with his deep voice. He is best known aboard the ship for his flat nose, having had it broken during a fight when he was a child on Lorell. He had always been a bit rough, and when you were in Sammy's gang, you knew you could expect him to fight for ya as long as you put up with his eccentricities, namely his odd obsession with acting. In fact, it was what had caused the fight in the first place. Sammy had tried to clean up his act, to go legitimate for a time as an actor, and had received a starring role in a play, Springtime for Palpatine. It had, of course, been a flop, and Sammy had read one of the more damaging reviews of his performance, which, as can be imagined, led to a lot of drinking and arguing, and eventually a trip to the offending critic's home, where he proceeded to involve himself in an unarmed brawl with the man. He was swiftly arrested, and though he was given the chance to have his broken nose fixed, he had declined. With his acting career over as fast as it had started, Sammy left the Consortium and sought a better life, joining up with Isoldor and his crew. As he served with Isoldor, his skills and surprisingly calm demeanor saw him flying through the ranks to become the first mate of the Denial of Self, the modified Action VI used by the crew. Sammy is most easily recognized by his habit of referencing old holodramas, plays, and various forms of entertainment, as well as his quick temper whenever someone criticizes his acting abilities. Sammy uses a pair of Westar-34 blaster pistols, which he keeps holstered on his belt, and a single cutlass. These weapons were stolen from a convoy during his time serving as crew aboard the Denial of Self.

Raphael

Full name: Raphael, Just Raphael, you got a frakking problem with that, do ya?

Well, whatcha wanna know, eh? My name, well, it's Raphael. No, I ain't got a last name, that a problem for ya? No? Good, I'd hate to have ta put ya through the window there. Now, where was I? Ah yeah, I'm from Kiffex, born and raised there. I always enjoyed my time there, drinking, fighting, hunting. But you know how these things go, smack the wrong person around even just a little bit and ya gotta run. Who was it I smacked about? Ahhh, well, that's the secret, innit? No, no I won't tell ya who it was, now stop interrupting me and lemme get back to my story. Anyway, where was I? Right, I had fled Kiffex, gone to the stars to escape my crime. Well, one thing led to another, and well, you know how rumors spread in a community like mine. I heard that the Corsairs was looking for people to sign on with them, and they had someone who was claiming to be a descendant of the Lorell Raiders. No, I don't mean oneah them dandies from the Consortium, I mean a real descendant of the Raiders. Is he? How the karking hells should I know? You think I asked him one day? You don't get to ask that type of thing on ships like these. Questions like that get ya killed. Only reason why I am even tolerating this set of questions is yer buying me rum. You never said ya would? Well, I think my buddy, this little DL-44 I got sitting on the table here says otherwise. Anyway, well, I signed up, worked a great deal with them guys here on Kabal, you know, fixing her up, she's a beauty, great lines. A dream to serve on, and I'm pleased to hold the position of helmsman. But anyway, I worked with them, drank with them, lived with them all, and eventually, we all finished the job, got her up and flying once more. So yeah, the Fairwind, why did they let me serve on her? Why wouldn't they? Is it because of my height? I ain't short ya piece of crap! I'm 5 foot 7, and now, I'm gonna beat the livin' daylights out o' ya.

Old Man Pullings

Real Name: Unknown

Old Man Pullings is perhaps the most important person aboard the Fairwind, he is one of the first men to join up with the Corsairs, hailing from their home of Port Vhork. He was an able seaman for most of his life, which comes with all the hazards and skills notable to that trade. He is approximately 80 years old, and though he may seem frail and weak, he can pull his weight like the best of them, and is quite exceptionally skilled with a sword. What is most important about him, however, is his role as mentor and storyteller aboard the ship. He is the one whom all crewmen go to with their issues, looking for guidance and advice. Of course, his help does come with a price, and usually comes in the form of some seemingly random parable, given only in exchange for rum or other forms of alcohol. He is well cared for by the crew, and due to his long years of service aboard a ship is generally given a less demanding watch, and plenty of time to drink in the crew's mess. Even the captains treat "The Old Man" with a great deal of respect, though they still outrank him. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of maritime superstitions, and is well known for voicing his concern about them.

Creating a Character for the Corsairs

The Trial By Fire

The trial by fire is a part of the initiation of all members of the Corsairs, and it mimics the events that led to the creation of the fleet. In simple terms, the potential pirates are given a boat and a crew of ten men or women. Once they are provisioned, they are sent out into the seas of Kabal, where they are told to raid a convoy of local shipping. It is not an easy challenge, for most will be undermanned for such a task, however, due to the exceptional skills of most applicants, the survival rate is high. If the applicant succeeds in bringing back any profit at all, they are allowed to join the Corsairs. If they fail, they will typically be dead, this culls the weak from herd, so to speak, and though harsh, has led to a higher level of success for the fleet.

equipment_scifi_by_Wallasaurus.jpg

Weaponry

While many crews aboard the various ships of the Corsairs fleet may use a wide variety of weapons and some weapons may be preferred on one ship and abhored on another, all raiders typically have at least one of the following weapons: a heavy blaster pistol of some sort, a bladed weapon (typically a cutlass or a dirk), and some sort of blaster carbine or rifle. Most of the crew aboard these ships rely on weapons stolen during raids at some point, and as a result uniformity is very rare aboard all but the smaller ships. In fact, it is often rare to see a ship with more than two people armed in a similar manner. Most of these weapons are also old, and frequently poorly maintained, either due to neglect, a lack of resources, or overuse. Most of the crew would rather toss away a blaster pistol than repair it, though exceptions are quite frequently made when rare or high quality weapons are obtained by the crew. Officers and captains typically are found with the highest grade weaponry they can find, eschewing common, mass produced, weapons for more elegant or powerful weapons, such as ELG-3A blasters, or a custom-made short sword to replace the basic pistol and cutlass combination.

Armor

female-warrior-leather-armour-23825612.jpg
The Corsairs are first and foremost pirates, and as such, they do not provide their crews with anything other specialist gear, this is especially true for armor, and as such, most of the crew does not wear anything but basic hide or leather armors. Older and wiser crew members may be found with their own sets of armor that have been scavenged from the dead bodies aboard the ships which they raid. Most of these armors, however, will protect from nothing more than blaster pistols, and even then, the chance that it will sufficiently protect the wearer is very low. There are exceptions to this rule, and those are primarily found in the teams of crew members who initially board targeted ships. As these highly specialized crew members undergo a great risk by being the first aboard raided ships, they often wear suits of powered armor or heavy armor that will serve to provide a much higher level of protection, including protection from blaster rifles and other higher powered weaponry. Officers, as with weapons, typically have nicer suits of armor, and maintain this armor to a much better standard than the frankly poor quality gear poseessed by the majority of the crew.

Gear
Most pirates in the Corsairs will not carry much in the way of gear other than a small med pack or pouch of bacta patches, a backpack for their loot, and a commlink. These are all that most sailors need for raids typically, for once the initial breaching teams are aboard the targeted ship, the common sailors have no real need for specialized gear. Some pirates may carry handheld scanners and other gear that has been scavenged from the bodies of the fallen, but otherwise, the basic gear is sufficient. Some ships may also better provide for the lowly crew members, however it must be remembered that this is the exception and not the rule.

Why Join the Corsairs?

Characters who join the corsairs should have a reason to have turned to piracy, whether they are looking for an escape from past troubles with the law, or just seek the freedom from the norms of normal society and seek to eek out a living by raiding ships, there should be some motivation for staying outside of normal society. Characters will more than likely either pilot their own personal ships, or, if there are sufficient faction ships, may captain one of the faction's, however, they should be prepared to come up with some theme or quirk that makes their ship and it's crew unique! Although the majority of the tone for this faction will be lighthearted, there will be times when serious matters will take precedence, and as such, characters should not be too silly, though campy and over-the-top is preferred. As mentioned before, characters should have some unique quirk, especially if they wish to sit at the captain's table, examples include womanizers with robin-hood complexes, characters who seem sane but who come across as crazy when stressed (i.e. Malkavians from World of Darkness), or a man who dresses like a pirate out of an old black and white film. Also, a note, Hapans are strongly encouraged to get involved, as the Raiders feature prominently in the history of the Hapan subspecies.

What Can I Expect From the Corsairs?

Players can expect a lot of swashbuckling raids, daring heists, and just general social interaction with an overall lighthearted tone. Players may also expect at times for more serious topics of a darker nature to be addressed in a purely IC manner. Most of all, players can expect fun.

How Can I Join the Corsairs?

To join, please send both Srota and Kay'la a PM asking one of us to set up your trial by fire if you wish to join as a member of an already established crew, or a detailed writeup of your desired ship (for an example, please see the information listed about the Fairwind above).

Additionally, please post a statement of interest in the thread below, in which you state why you are interested and why you would be a good fit for this faction.

So why are they Lorell Raiders and not just space pirates? The Raiders were active in 4000 and 3000 BBY, which was a really long time ago - long enough that it seems unlikely anyone would try to reform them without a damn good reason. That said, if they're going for the Lorell Raiders thing like some kind of Dread Pirate Roberts deal, it would make sense for them to be Hapan (duh) and almost entirely (if not 100%) male, as it's established in canon that most pirate groups are fed up dudes who don't want to be ruled by women anymore. Hapans are kind of jerks by nature and don't like other races/species, and I can't imagine a bunch of people who turned to piracy to escape a matriarchal society would be terribly welcoming to women among their ranks.

tl;dr: Space pirates are cool. Calling them the Lorell Raiders seems kinda silly when they aren't really Hapan space pirates/have no relationship to the original group.

The intention for this group was (and still is) for the majority of them to still be hapan, and as for the name, it never says the group ceased to be active. With about 5000 years between their start and now, obviously thing would have changed and evolved, so I hardly saw any reason to restrict the group to only hapan males. Besides, excellence breeds exceptions to rules. No leader who wants to truly be a success would refuse to allow a competent pirate (and their ship) to join them, especially after having the majority of their fleet wiped out at the hands of the sith.

The Lorell Raiders were the forerunners of the Hapans, safe bet to assume that they ceased to be active long ago. Come to think of it I do remember a quote by Prince Isolder in one of the NJO novels that mentioned the Radiers in past tense, as a thing of the past.

Just saying, Hapan culture hasn't really changed - they're still matriarchal and somewhat xenophobic, and that's well-established on the site. The wiki is also pretty clear that the Raiders were wiped out by the Jedi, which is why a lot of Hapans dislike Force users:

The Lorell Raiders, or Hapan Pirates as they came to be called, were a group of pirates who colonized the Hapes Cluster some time before 4000 BBY, and were the ancestors of the Hapan Humans.

They learned of safe routes through the hazardous Transitory Mists barrier that surrounded the Cluster and took refuge there along with a number of abductees. Many of the raiders were killed around 4030 BBY when they ventured out and were defeated by Republic forces led by the Jedi under Arca Jeth. Although the era of the Raiders was at an end, they did have survivors who became known as Hapans, who developed a strong hatred of the Jedi for the death they brought to the Raiders.

5 Humans / 2 Hapans = 29% Hapan? Math isn't my strongest suit, granted, but the numbers seem a bit skewed for a group riding the coattails of the Lorell Raiders. You'd be better off just calling yourselves something cool and leaving the LR legacy out of it.

Well, I stand corrected, then, I'll think about switching it. The other option is of course, more hapans joining, I just don't see the interest from the people playing hapan characters, so... yeah...

I see no problem with using the Lorell Raiders name. Wouldn't be the first Faction that has been made with a name of a former group.

*Cough* Death Watch *Cough* Which by this accord is also a good thousand + years old.

Also, since I forgot to add it to my previous comment, I take a great offense to your little comment about women Bee. Since I am the only current female listed in this faction. If you have a problem with women playing leadership roles in any group, perhaps you should take it up with one of the Admins.

It's unfortunate that you feel that way, but unless they're no longer a part of the group, there's also a female Twi'lek listed on the roster as well. I wasn't trying to single you out, nor did I make any mention of having issues with women in the faction taking a leadership role. None of the criticism in my posts was meant to be taken personally, and if I have a problem with you or your characters rest assured I'll let you know somewhere that isn't the indie factions board!

Certainly sounds that way to me. I'd love to know where you're getting your information from. If it's so canon then you wont mind backing it up with some proof. Otherwise this sounds like a very narrow minded sexist opinion that would have been better otherwise kept to yourself.

As you said yourself their hay day was well in the past, so if they were reformed why would they go back to the old ways. What if they want to create a new brand of Raiders just using their old names. Also having all your industry destroyed along with most if not all of your fleet is a great way to causes changes in idealism as you have to evolve to surive. Good enough reason for people who escaped to form the Raiders.

it's established in canon that most pirate groups are fed up dudes who don't want to be ruled by women anymore.

Imagine you flee you homeworlds because you have nothing left in the homeworlds. You need a banner to build around, so you make something that would draw your peoples attention to you. If you get some others who aren't your kind, then oh well. You will take anyone you can get if they have the skills and the equipment. If this wasn't the case, you wouldn't have foreign fighters in all the wars going on right now would you?

Bee's point on the pissed off hapan dudes becoming pirates was from wookieepedia, and is accurate, it's what I tried to do with Halisstrad's backstory. I plan to work a bit more on the history tonight to explain the use of the name and to try and address the whole not enough hapans thing, however, as I have said before, you want more hapans in the group, make some.

Actually you're both completely wrong. Hapes was not a female led nor dominated society till AFTER the Battle of Lorell.

Yes, this is true, I think there is a miscommunication here, which I can easily resolve, after the battle of lorell, the raiders were all but destroyed, and the remnants formed the consortium, however, the female led society was oppressive towards men in the cluster and as time went on, men who could not hack it in this society fled to the mists to become pirates. Thus, both sides are right, just at different times.

Certainly sounds that way to me. I'd love to know where you're getting your information from. If it's so canon then you wont mind backing it up with some proof. Otherwise this sounds like a very narrow minded sexist opinion that would have been better otherwise kept to yourself.

You do know Bee's not a dude, so her making those comments due to her being sexist would be rather stupid. And I really don't see how you took any of that as a personal attack against you or in any way a sexist comment. Think about it logically, even if this were not canon, you have a society dominated by women, men are given very little if any power. A group of men escape and turn to piracy to express their freedom. There just got out of a society where women suppressed them, controlled them and looked down on them, would you not find t possible for them to be reluctant to allow women into their crew?

I agree it would be possible, but it's been years since the fall of the consortium, has it not? Attitudes change, and they are, after all, pirates, and in need of ships and skilled commanders, so, yes, they would allow such things, as I conceived them.

Yeah, not saying its not possible, I was just explaining where Bee could be coming from with her comments and how Huntress was misinterpreting them.
