Forest moon, Ossus | theme

In the wake of the terrible destruction that took place on Ossus during the Exalted attack, multitudes of packed refugee ships sought to flee the carnage to find safety elsewhere in the Galaxy. A last-ditch effort for many, people tried leaving on any ship that could be considered spaceworthy. Despite assurances from rushed mechanics and engineers, several of these turned out to not be ready for the cold, merciless vacuum of the void. While many thankfully made it off-world, others simply failed to escape the atmosphere or crumpled into scrap in space. One lucky ship suffered some catastrophe but managed to crash land on one of the two moons that orbited the planet — the one that was densely covered in forest, yet largely uninhabited.

Elenath, having arrived too late to assist in the initial refugee exodus of Ossus, answered the distress beacon that weakly pinged from the moon. Arriving in his ship, the Portent, the Jedi's eyes scanned the landscape with concern. A great plume of smoke billowed from the wreckage of the refugee ship, but the closest clearing safe to land in was some distance away. "Take us down, Beorn," he commented to his BB unit while prepping himself for the short trek ahead. Despite the relatively simple task, the Seer couldn't help but notice a disturbance in the Force. Something wasn't quite right on this moon...but he couldn't place it. Opening up a comms channel directed at the refugee camp, he called out, "Survivors of Ossus, this is the captain of the Portent. I'm here to take any survivors off-world."

After a few moments of static, there was a reply that the Echani could only barely make out through the sounds of his ship touching down. "Gods...a rescue? Please come quickly, we have wounded!" Stepping off the ramp, Elenath was greeted by a cacophony of fauna sounds under a dark canopy. "Hmm...reminds me of Kashyyyk. Beorn, probably best for you to stay with the ship. I'll be back soon." The droid warbled in cautious acknowledgement as the Jedi stepped away, plunging deeper through the forest while pushing away overhanging branches.

Stumbling down the ramp behind Elenath was Keck, heavily laden with a tall backpack almost as big as he was. Fully stuffed and almost overflowing with medical supplies and — of course — various snacks, he was ready to rescue some refugees. He was instantly starry-eyed at the dense foliage, letting out a little coo of awe. He hadn't been somewhere with this much green since last he was on Naboo! Realizing he'd been standing still too long, he hurried after the Echani as fast as his little legs could carry him.

Luckily, he was able to avoid at least some of the dense foliage due to his height. "How we gonna help surv - swurrv - people?" he asked, getting stuck on big words like survivors still. A large flock of some flighted creature suddenly burst from the growth ahead of them, startled and squawking loudly. "Fix ship, maybe? Or take with?" Keck was definitely no mechanic, and if there were too many refugees then they might not all fit on the Portent.

Something large groaned, somewhere deep within the forest.

A waft of some particularly...interesting...smells drifted out of Keck's backpack and into Elenath's nostrils. While perhaps normal-sized for most humanoids, the sack was comically large on the back of the banana yellow amphibian. However, Keck had simply refused to allow any help in transporting his goods — he had to "pull his own weight" or something. Elenath still didn't know if his fellow Knight understood the figure of speech. Regardless, he was appreciative of the company, especially as Keck seemed far more acclimated to the landscape.

The Echani pondered the posed question momentarily, almost having an eye poked out by an obstructing tree branch. "I...suppose it depends on the damage to their ship," he replied. "I only have rudimentary skills in repairing mechanics...patchwork at best, really." My father, Amarthan, taught me all I know about improvising on the fly..." Elenath trailed off, the thoughts of his father not improving his steadily increasing feeling of foreboding doom.

A resounding groan reverberated off of the trees and through the ground, sending a few flying creatures scattering. Not many of the other fauna seemed perturbed by the noise, but Elenath didn't want to take any chances nonetheless. He crouched down low, opening up his senses to the forest while taking care not to make any sudden movement or noise. "Do you hear that?" he asked quietly, with the pathway the two Jedi took taking them through a pair of large rocks. Unease steadily grew and roiled in the seer's stomach like a sickness, causing him to grimace. "I sense something terrible in this forest...but I don't think it belongs to whatever made that noise," Elenath continued to Keck. "What do your eyes see, little one? I can't distinguish one tree from another."
