Quin grinned. He liked seeing Nikko flustered— it made him feel better about himself. He’d been in her shoes before, being the one the surprises were given to rather than the one pulling the surprises. On more than one occasion too, as a matter of fact.

“Yep!” He answered the Padawan cheerfully. “He knows it’s us, alright. So he’ll be careful. But he won’t be able to hide it forever.” He nodded at the last part of what she said.

“Exactly.” Then, Quin checked his watch. It was almost the start of their shift, so he shifted the gears, turned the speeder around, and the two Jedi were on their way to the mayor’s office.

He was already standing outside, waiting for them. He wasn’t smiling, however, just like the first time he’d seen them. Maybe it meant something. Maybe it meant nothing. Whatever it was, Quin would make sure to take a note of it. Nikko at his side, he made his way up the steps of the town hall.

“Master Jedi.” The mayor gave each one a respectful bow. “How kind of you to offer me your protection. Especially you, Master Ivita. I am glad to see you well.” He gestured for them to follow him. “I hear… this is indefinite?”

“Yes, sir.”
Quin winked at Nikko when the mayor looked away. “One of us is to be with you at all times.” The mayor didn’t look too happy at that.

“Yes, I am aware. For the morning I will be in my office, so make yourselves comfortable. I have breakfast set up for you.” Opening the door, the two Jedi would find a feast of morning dishes on a table in his office. It was an awful lot considering that they’d just delivered supplies last night, though. The mayor would sit down at his desk, waving the two Jedi off.

“You can eat, don’t worry. I won’t go anywhere.” What’s with the attitude? As the son of two politicians, this was certainly not the way one in higher office was supposed to act. But also growing up with politics, Quin had learned to deal with many different types of people. And to tolerate them.

“Cheers,” he said to Nikko, raising his cup of orange juice.

Nikko nodded. "Got it." She supposed secrecy wouldn't work very long anyways, and would give the mayor a reason to kick them out. Speaking of the mayor, he didn't look happy with them when they showed up. Don't like us keeping an eye on you, do you, mister? She and Quin dismounted from the speeder, walking up to the mayor. When the mayor adressed her as Master Ivita, she didn't bother correcting him and instead threw a smirk at Quin. "Guess I outrank you now," she mumbled, just loud enough for her companion to hear and no louder. As she started to look back towards the mayor, the Pantoran noticed Quin winking at her. …Why did he wink at me? Before she could venture down that alleyway of stupid questions, she was fortunately interrupted-and, in a way, answered-by the word 'breakfast.' Nikko immediately wondered what they had for breakfast here and how they cooked it. As they entered, she scanned the food. There seemed to be a copious amount of food here. Maybe a little too much, especially since she had literally helped deliver rations to this place. Still, she respectfully took her seat across the table from Quin. Inspecting her food quickly and discreetly for poison. When Quin raised his glass she raised hers as well, clinking them together. "Cheers," she repeated, taking a sip and then lowering her glass.

So the two Jedi remained, eating their breakfast as the mayor signed papers at his desk. Although he was hungry, Quin didn’t eat too much, mostly since he was always hungry and partially because he felt bad that much of this could have gone to the civilians instead.

When the mayor got up, so did Quin. The man shook his head.

“I’m just going to the refresher. There’s no need.”

“It’s best to be safe, sir. The pirates can be dangerous.” The man sighed.

“As you say, Master Jedi.” He whispered something to an aide, who scurried off in another direction. Quin glanced at Nikko, turning his head just slightly to indicate for her to follow him. Then, he would make his way after the mayor as he departed.

Nikko pushed away her chair right after Quin did, silently preparing to follow the mayor wherever he went. Apparently, though, the mayor was smart enough to have an aide do whatever dirty work needed doing. Seeing Quin's nod, she trailed the aide. "Where are you going?" she muttered to herself. Certainly was suspicious, whatever it was. She wished she could share her opinions with Quin, but the Pantoran wasn't sure if he was in a spot where he could talk. Ah, well.

The mayor himself did, indeed, go into the refresher. It was pretty much Quin had expected, but it didn’t make it any better. He stood outside for a painfully long time, tapping his foot as he waited. He turned on his comm.

“Mayor’s… in the refresher.” Quin kept his voice at a whisper so that the man wouldn’t hear. “Has the aide done anything?” He switched his mic off then as he heard the mayor continue to hum to himself and flush the vacc.

When the mayor came out back out, without washing his hands, the Jedi noted with a face of disgust, Quin quickly looked the other way and tapped his foot, his hands behind his back.

“Back to the desk, Master Jedi.” Quin nodded, followed along, listening for any response that Nikko might bring.

Nikko was walking down the dusty street after the aide when Quin commed her. She unclipped her comm from her belt and spoke into it. "Nothing yet. Just walking down the road." As she spoke, however, the aide approached a parked landspeeder and hopped in. "Actually...change of plans. And I'll, ah, be unavailable by comm indefinitely." With that, she switched channels. "Viper, I'm leaving my comm on. Track it and record whatever you see." While she was talking, the landspeeder started and was just beginning to pull away from the curb. Nikko hurled her comm as far as she could, and it landed right behind the seats and slid down under them. Perfect. With that, the Pantoran turned and started jogging back to the house. She arrived about ten minutes later, knocking on the door and waiting for an answer.

Viper followed the landspeeder at a distance, making sure to keep his photoreceptor on the target at all times. The landspeeder turned onto a poorly-maintained side road about a mile out of town and went for a quarter mile before stopping in a clearing. A man came out to meet the aide, and after they talked for a few minutes, the man vanished back into the woods, and the speeder headed back to town. Viper, more out of programming than orders, transmitted the whole data set from the investigation (and he sent all of it, even weather data) back to the shuttle and the audio to Quin's comm before turning and trailing after the landspeeder.
@Sicadorito (For some reason the word speder changes to broom when I post. I had to misspell it or it would get messed up, but you know what I mean.)

Quin frowned at Nikko’s response.

Indefinitely? What—” But she’d already switched channels. With the mayor’s eyes on him, though, he had no choice but to sit down and wait. He trusted that the Padawan knew what she was doing, even if it did make him anxious not being able to communicate with her.

Then, he received a comm request from Viper and switched to the droid’s channel instead. There he was blasted with so much information that he had to ask him to slow down in order for him to process it.

“She threw her comm into the speeder?” He almost forgot to whisper. Apparently she did. Blinking a few times, Quin would continue to receive information from Viper until he heard a knock at the door. The mayor was as good as done for.

When it was opened, Nikko would see the face of a very impressed Jedi knight.

“Good work,” he said with a smile, patting on her shoulder once before continuing his exchange with Viper.

“Did you record the audio?” While he had heard everything, from the date and time of the next attack and the explicit orders to raid the mayor’s office too, they would need solid evidence to show the townspeople. To Nikko, he said, “Get prepared. It’s going to get chaotic in here.”

"Thanks," Nikko said, almost flinching in surprise when he patted her shoulder. Apparently, she needed to get better about this physical contact stuff. She stepped into the house, blinking as Quin said it was going to get chaotic. "...Why? Does the mayor know that we know?" she asked, remembering to lower her voice just in time. Meanwhile, Viper would confirm that he had sent the data to the Jedi shuttle and that it was also saved to his databanks. "What is Viper saying? What did he see?"

Quin noticed the flinch at his shoulder pat, and he almost immediately regretted it. He didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable, and given that he tended to be physical, he realized that it might not have been smart to do. Not everyone was like Lemon.

“Sorry,” he said quickly, but the conversation quickly moved onto the mayor.

“Not… exactly,”
Quin answered Nikko, scratching his head. He kept his voice low, even if they were out of earshot of the mayor at his desk. “Viper told me that the next raid is scheduled to be tonight. The mayor was requesting that the pirates attack here specifically.” It made sense— assuming the Jedi didn’t already know what was going on, the mayor would have successfully covered up his tracks. That was one thing.

As for chaotic…

“I want to infiltrate their base. See who’s heading up their operation,” Quin admitted. “The aide was just talking to a scout. I want to end the cycle.” It would be dangerous for the Padawan, though. He didn’t like to risk the chance of Nikko getting hurt again, or even worse, but such was the life of a Jedi.

They always had to make the hard decisions.

“We have to get to their base somehow. And the best way I can think of is to follow them back after they’re done. Once we make the mayor think we’re dead.” He didn’t know if that was the best plan, but it was the best he could think of.

“Unless you have a better idea?” It was a genuine question.

Nikko tilted her head to the side. "So, he thinks we suspect him, but he doesn't know we have any proof. And, based on the size of breakfast, something tells me he's getting paid pretty well." Her voice was harder than usual, without its normal musicality. When Quin said infiltration, though, her eyes lit up. "Oh, that sounds fun. Some chaos is always welcome, right?" She said the last part almost jokingly. Almost. "Wait, fake our death? How are we going to do that? And it sounds better then any plan I could make."

Quin nodded to Nikko’s statement, noting the hard edge that had appeared in her tone. The observation on their breakfast was a good one too, and it was yet another example of his corruption. Unfortunately, both Jedi knew that the mayor was just a pawn.

Quin grinned at the cheeky question that came after. “Most of the time.” In this case, it certainly was. Other types, well, he would have liked to avoid.

“I don’t think you’re going to like it,” he said, glancing at Nikko, “but we could—” Before he had a chance to finish, though, he was interrupted by the sound of blaster fire outside. Revving speeders. Shouting. That was strange… the raid wasn’t supposed to have started until much later. He heard the guard’s scream cut short from outside, and that was when he knew this was real. He ignited his lightsaber when a group of five pirates burst into the room.

Nikko frowned when Quin said she wouldn't like it, but before she could respond the sound of combat outside caught her attention. "Wha-" she started, turning towards the door and igniting her saber. The pirates burst in, weapons up. The first one fired, but Nikko deflected his shot back at him. The man tumbled to the ground, and before the pirates behind him could fire she extended her free hand and reached out to the Force, slamming the thug into one of his companions behind him. The two beings crashed violently into the wall, and the Pantoran Jedi could have sworn she heard a bone snap. In the moment, though, she couldn't care less. Those jerks deserved it. Leaving Quin to deal with the other two criminals, she turned and started blocking the blasts from another group of at least eight pirates who were coming in through the windows. "Any ideas are appreciated!" she shouted to her companion as she stood, back-to-back with him, bouncing shot after shot with her saber.

Nikko was on the pirates in an instant, and Quin joined in to help. As the Padawan took on three, Quin would send out a Force push into one of the remaining two, sending him flying out the front door where he’d come from. As the other one sent a blaster bolt his way, he deflected it right back into his chest.

In the split second he had, he turned around to look for the mayor. But the man was gone. It was too late to worry about him, though— even more pirates burst in through windows around the room, practically surrounding the two Jedi. Nikko’s back against his, Quin heard her shout.

“Don’t get hit!” he yelled back. Whatever he’d planned earlier was out the window now, but now that it was just the Jedi and the pirates in the room…

He deflected two blaster bolts into the head of one pirate, into the chest of another. The remaining two he slammed against the wall with the Force. That gave him an idea. He moved over, pulled the red mask off one pirate’s face, slid it over his own, looked at Nikko as she finished off the remaining pirates. Grinned.

“I think I know how we can get in.”

Nikko's saber whirled as it deflected countless blaster bolts, a few of them whizzing back to hit the pirates. "Lovely advice," she mumbled, unsure if Quin could hear. Two pirates stood from their cover and charged her. Caught by surprise, she managed to deflect a shot into the first man's chest, but the other managed to get within close range. His fist flew out in a right hook, but the Padawan ducked just in time and instinctively brought her saber around, thrusting the weapon into the thug's chest. Then, she used his dead body as a shield for a few moments before finally using the Force to launch the carcass back towards the pirates. The body struck three of the thugs, leaving only one pirate left. The man droped his blaster and slowly raised his hands before turning and scrambling out the window. At Quin's voice, she turned and saw the Knight putting the helmet on. "Smart," she said with a grin, going over to the clump of dead pirates and pulling off a female pirate's helmet and outer suit. "We will need to put on these clothes on, though. Our Jedi robes won't be exactly welcome." As she spoke, she slipped on the dark orange worksuit over her robes and slid the helmet onto her head. A bit of her lilac hair stuck out the back, but it would hopefully be hard to spot.

As Quin began to slip into his new ugly orange pirate garb, he saw that Nikko had already finished changing.

“One step ahead as always,” he said with a grin as he pulled up his work suit. He stretched his legs and arms, flexed his hands. How do they wear these things? It was like wearing a heavy swimsuit. He supposed it provided decent armor, but only if these pirates were having fistfights all the time. As he tucked his lightsaber into a hidden pouch where the suit’s former owner had kept their dagger, Quin wondered if these townspeople even attempted to fight back at all.

“Now we just need to find a speeder.” The knight stepped toward the door, looked outside. Luckily for the two Jedi there were plenty— thirteen pirates hadn’t just arrived on foot. It looked like the others were just about to leave too, given they had almost finished loading the giant boxes of supplies onto their speeders.

“HEY! You two, help out over here!” One of the pirates shouted at them, waving them over urgently. Quin would make his way down. “Put this on top. Then we can get out of here.” With that, he waved them off, leaving Quin and Nikko to place the final box in.

Hm. How the tables have turned. Quin hoisted the box up, nodding for Nikko to get into the speeder where the other raiders were waiting. Hopefully this would end up in their favor, he thought as he climbed in afterwards.

"Yep," Nikko said with a smirk as she zipped up the uniform, then hid her lightsaber just like Quin had. It was uncomfortable and certainly far less flexible than her normal robes. Following Quin out onto the street, she turned to face one of the pirates as he called out for her to get the crate. Silently, she strolled over to the speeder, acknowledging Quin's nod with a small nod of her own. Hopping in next to a disgruntled pirate, she scooted over a little to make room for her companion. As the disguised Knight entered the speeder and the vehicle started to move, the man beside her shifted. "What happened to the Jedi?"

Quin eyed the man beside him, eyed Nikko further down.

“Well, it wasn’t easy, but we were able to take ‘em down.” He grinned, but then remembered that the pirate couldn’t see him because of the helmet. “They never saw it coming. Whack! Like that.” Quin pretended to punch the air. The pirate didn’t look amused. Even if he couldn’t see his face, he could sense it.

“I bet you’re just jealous you didn’t get to kill a Jedi.” The man didn’t respond.

The speeder would approach the base after a while, though they could see it far before they arrived at the gates. Even at first glance it was clear that the pirates lived better than the townspeople. These buildings were far cleaner, larger, and looked more like a developed city than the ones back in the town. Even if there were only pirates milling about, weapons in hand.

Once the gate let them in, the speeder would make its way to the warehouse.

“Get unloading!” The same commander from earlier would wave them off the ship, and Quin would follow along. Glancing at Nikko, he gestured toward an open door at the other end of the warehouse. If they could get through there and away from this group…

“I said, get unloading!” Someone smacked Quin on the head from behind, and the knight had no choice but to get a box. All the while though, he had his eyes on that door.

Nikko frowned underneath her helmet as Quin talked about 'killing' the Jedi. Even though she knew it hadn't happened, hearing Quin talk about killing her-and himself-felt awkward. Her train of thought, however, was interrupted by the sight of the pirate's base. It was certainly nicer than the village they had just left, and she wondered where the funding was coming from. Once the speeder stopped, the Pantoran clambered out of the vehicle and was about to pick up one of the crates when Quin motioned toward the warehouse. She gave a barely perceptible nod and lifted the container while Quin received a wallop over the head for his trouble. Nikko headed in the direction of the warehouse, looking back to see if Quin was following her.

As discreetly as he could while carrying a crate of supplies, Quin would make his way toward the open door. It didn’t seem like anyone was getting suspicious as he glanced behind him, and he set the box right by the door just as he slipped through. Finally catching up with Nikko, he would motion for them to exit the building and into the larger part of base.

Once they were outside and it didn’t look like anyone was chasing them, Quin would turn to Nikko. It was time for a mini test— even if he wasn’t Nikko’s master per se, it didn’t mean that he could neglect his role as a knight. Or maybe it was because he couldn’t think of anything at the moment from being whacked on the head so hard.

Either way, he would ask the Padawan.

“Now that we’re in… how would you get to the pirate boss, Nikko?” Quin met her gaze from underneath his helmet, crossing his arms.

Nikko set her box down near the warehouse's entrance and was about to go further when she heard someone entering after her. She whirled, ready to fight, but relaxed when she realized it was only Quin. Silently, she followed him outside, looking around to ensure they were alone. Seems like a gross lack of security, she thought to herself. Her thoughts were interrupted by Quin's inquiry, and she turned to meet his gaze. He was asking her about a plan? That had never happened to her before. "Um..." How would she get to the pirate boss? "Start a fight? If we do that, we'll probably get taken to his chambers." That seemed to make sense. Not the greatest plan ever, but hey, it was the best she could come up with. "Or we could, uh, take a crate of stuff to his office or whatever? And put a grenade in it? Or several grenades?" Explosions were good for killing, right?
