So, I know that the system was changed so that Force Powers can develop via actual use to alleviate the training system somewhat (which is awesome for my character, so I'm happy) but I was wondering if they could actualoly learn new Force Powers like this. For example, my Padawan wants to learn Force Valor, but there's no one, apparently, who can teach it to him. So since he'd probably know the basics of what it was supposed to do, could he just use some horribly fail version of it in actual sparring or whatever to "learn" it and then develop it normally? Force Valor is just the example, it could as easily be Lightning for a Sith or Force Resist or whatever.

I'd say if you slowly RP'd your character getting better at it. Perhaps the first time it working for a moment then nothing. You'd have to draw it out to a few RPs before understanding it, then draw it out further before mastering it; but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

The way I've understood it is that you are allowed to learn the power quickly on your own with the use of a Holocron. This is even faster if you have someone else learning with you since you can both add what you know in order to learn it faster.

Mind you, using a Holocron is gay. So try not use it or I will think very mean things about you.

Holocrons are kind of a last ditch move; it's preferable if you can develop it through RP with others, be it getting taught the power or stumbling upon an unconscious manifestation of it during an "oh kriff!" moment and slowly, and I emphasize slowly, developing that way. But if there is no other way, and sometimes there isn't (I know Force Valor is unusually rare in this timeline for some reason, so there's hardly anyone who can teach it), then you gotta do what you gotta do.

My character is (very, very slowly!) developing Force Whirlwind in such an uncontrolled manner; after Denzein posts in one of my RPs (come back Denzein!) I get to RP one of those "oh kriff" moments.

If you'd like something to base a "self training" RP thread off of, you could take a look at the Designated Training Threads that I've been putting op as open training for anyone that cares to join. You could use a similar approach, but for the thing. For some of the stuff I RPed out trying/learning/practicing, I simply put it as "from researching ti from the texts, I get this feeling and vibe from it, so I'll manipulate it like this and do that" but with much more elaborate detail.

This is the OOC thread with a list of the threads. If you want to look at one as an example, probably Telekinesis would be the best demonstration of being creative with learning to use abilities.
