BIOGRAPHY

Dorin Kem was born in a space station that orbited an impressively unremarkable world. His mother was a cantina waitress and his father was a spacer he never knew. Growing up he’d move from planet to planet as his mother sought to provide him with a better childhood. He attended many different schools, the majority of them poor with not much in the way of educational standards. In spite of this, the young Duros took to academics like a Gungan to water.

His excellent performance had awarded him a scholarship at a prestigious Corellian engineering institution. The Duros would meet his wife while studying on Corellia. He’d find a job at a manufacturing conglomerate, and the Duros couple would be graced with a child. They enjoyed two happy decades together before tragedy struck.

Dorin’s wife fell suddenly ill. His employer became involved in a legal dispute and had played with the facts of the matter, making the Duros into a scapegoat. Dorin lost his wife, and then his license to practice engineering. He was forced to take on contract work off the books wherever he could find it. Whilst designing a set of custom armaments for a combat droid, the aging engineer had a lightbulb moment.

He scraped together what remained of his savings to purchase a sturdy labour droid, a small armoury’s worth of weapons, and the ship of his childhood dreams. With a little bravado, a can-do attitude, and a lot of technical know-how, Dorin Kem: disgraced engineer would become Dorin Kem: feared bounty hunter. He had the gear, he had the drive, the only thing left was to build the reputation.

Personality

Cheerful, easy-going and with a good sense of humour, Dorin is not the typical example of a bounty hunter. He conducts himself with an endearing awkwardness, and strives to treat people with honesty and respect, as long as he is afforded the same dignity. Of course, he responds to unkindness in turn and has no qualms with breaking the law in his punishment of those who wrong him. On that same note, he has no qualms with breaking the law in general considering his first hand experience with how corrupt legal systems can be.

He has a knack for bluffing his way out of a tight spot when the situation calls for it. Recognising that aesthetics play a significant role in how one is perceived in his line of business, the Duros knows when to put on the tough guy persona but he’s found that on occasion bluffing doesn’t work. That’s no problem though, he has a droid-shaped contingency plan for when it doesn’t. Still an engineer at heart, he applies his logical, systematic problem solving approach to most aspects of his life.

Appearance

The Duros stands tall at 1.90 m with a lean build. His green face is often fixed in a calculating expression, with his sharp orange eyes darting around to gather information. Dorin is usually garbed in a blast vest over which he wears a weathered tan duster coat with a red bandanna around his neck. On bounty hunting expeditions, he slings on a bandolier strapped with power packs for his numerous aramaments. On his person he has holsters for blasters, sheaths for vibroknives and pockets for explosives. Armed to the teeth, Dorin projects a formidable appearance when he is working.

On the job, he is inseparable from Betsy, his ever-reliable sidekick. Betsy is a droid that appears to be an unremarkable EK4 Stevedore labour model, but the Duros engineer has carried out some serious modification. Most of this comes in the form of reprogramming, making the dumb labour droid into a cold killer bounty hunting companion. Her processor and sensor modules were also upgraded in the conversion. Betsy carries both blaster and sniper rifles which she is able to use with respectable proficiency thanks to her retrofitted hands and servomotors. In close quarters combat, the labour droid can pack a hell of a punch with her heavy limbs.

Skills

The Duros bounty hunter does not live up to the promise of his intimidating array of armaments. He grew up a total holobookworm and a nerd and as such never developed the marksmanship skills possessed by his contemporaries in the trade. He’s found the whole gunslinging business to be a lot harder than he imagined and has decided it’d be best to take it step-by-step. There’s a long way for Dorin to go before he can be considered skilled.

What he lacks for in marksmanship, he makes it up in technical prowess. He is excellent at mechanical and electrical design, tinkering, and repair, as evident in the work done on his trusty labourer-turned-hunter droid sidekick. Betsy handles most of the menial work involved in a bounty hunting expedition.

Dorin is a natural problem solver – observant, resourceful and good at making plans on the spot. He also has some skill in programming thanks to his recent work on Betsy. Additionally, Dorin also holds basic slicing knowledge.

Being Duros, Dorin can speak both Durese and Galactic basic.
