I'm not really sure what it is. I had just assumed it was a kind of taboo fashion that followed bands such as MCR, but a couple of days ago I was chatting up some bird and somehow Nirvana came into the conversation, she laughed and off-handedly said something about it being emo, I asked her why and she said that Kurt Cobain killed himself and their music was sad, but didn't really elaborate because frankly I think she wanted a shag more than a debate. Anywho, does this mean that any music containing emotional content of any kind can be classed as emo? Is guitar a suicidal instrument? Does long hair make you more or less like to cut your wrists? This is a thread dedicated to answering those questions, and posing other possibly more ridiculous ones.

Well, by her logic, Elvis is emo. He went and OD'd and sang a song about how his girlfriend left him and he went to Heartbreak Hotel.

Emo, or emotive, is a music genre that focuses mostly around lyrical content than instrument playing. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, usually about instances in the writers life or something like that. The stereotype that all emo's cut their wrists is really stupid as a lot of "emo" bands are straight edge, meaning they don't do drugs or drink and life life clean. It really is a broad genre and you can classify a lot of music as "emo."

Typical response from a kid who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Typical response from someone who would rather crap on someone's opinion than actually try to discuss it and reason with it.

My point: knock it off.

I was wondering when you were gonna get here. D:

Oh you know me, I like to put some wit into my trolling. I thought that what I did was actually clever instead of the the ever expected "Emo's cut themselves" line.

Oh yeah, at least your trolls are worth reading. I get a chuckle or two.

Let's try to discuss the topic rather than have a side conversation.

The original topic is going to do nothing but get people to troll me while I try to show that emo music is not what people make it out to be. I see no point.

I think I hate this stereotype. When I was growing up cutting yourself wasn't a very widespread thing, if you were angry you got in fights, sad you probably ODed, suddenly signs that are obvious cries for help are being trashed by the general public as signs of a weak character, or following some kind of suicide fad. Being dissed for your musical taste is nothing new though, Punk wasn't originally a term or endearement, but we just took it on a lived it to make our protest, I think "emos" need to do the same.

Emo and punk have smiliar roots if you think about it. The band Suicidal Tendencies is considered one of the first emo bands and they have heavy punk roots.
