I think I hate this stereotype. When I was growing up cutting yourself wasn't a very widespread thing, if you were angry you got in fights, sad you probably ODed, suddenly signs that are obvious cries for help are being trashed by the general public as signs of a weak character, or following some kind of suicide fad. Being dissed for your musical taste is nothing new though, Punk wasn't originally a term or endearement, but we just took it on a lived it to make our protest, I think "emos" need to do the same.
Punk was revolutionary, emo is not.
Honestly, you can't compare the two. In twenty years or so no one will know what "emo" was, same goes with Gangster Rap or any other crap music genre. Emo is just a fad. It'll disappear soon enough.
