I think I hate this stereotype. When I was growing up cutting yourself wasn't a very widespread thing, if you were angry you got in fights, sad you probably ODed, suddenly signs that are obvious cries for help are being trashed by the general public as signs of a weak character, or following some kind of suicide fad. Being dissed for your musical taste is nothing new though, Punk wasn't originally a term or endearement, but we just took it on a lived it to make our protest, I think "emos" need to do the same.

Punk was revolutionary, emo is not.

Honestly, you can't compare the two. In twenty years or so no one will know what "emo" was, same goes with Gangster Rap or any other crap music genre. Emo is just a fad. It'll disappear soon enough.

Emo and punk have smiliar roots if you think about it. The band Suicidal Tendencies is considered one of the first emo bands and they have heavy punk roots.

I think the fashions are quite similar as well, I've been in quite a few fights over piky's calling me emo.

That is a very hindsight statement. Punk has never been as big as the media make it out to be, it probably has a larger following now than it did in 77. I don't know if emo will be remembered, I'm not really too bothered either as I don't think I've ever really listening to any typically emo band. All I'm certain of is I don't like the way this subculture seems to have assimilated every band and style I have ever seemed to like, and that it seems that humanity has become something dirty, as if killing yourself is anything to mock or take lightly.

Exactly, it is an art form that is good enough to even have its own genre. And bashing it all the time mocks the people who's heart and soul goes into writing the music and starting the bands in the first place.
