I haven't watched the teaser itself since I don't care enough, but I have seen the ridiculous ass lightsaber. It looks like it was made because it's "speshul." I mean, I guess I can see why people agree with the cross guard, in that it keeps one's hand from slipping down the hilt. However... that's kinda what the ridged grip on the hilts are for (or, if a smoother cylinder is used, using a rough glove with grip on it). The exhaust vent theory seems silly too. I think I'd be more on board with the lightsaber if it didn't have the little "flames" or "blades" or whatever it is coming out of each end of the cross guard.

Wouldn't it make sense to have a villain have a "speshul" weapon? That was what lightsabers were in the OT anyhow. It'd be nice to see some variety but I myself am one of the exhaust port guys. Why? Because this lightsaber is a prototype heavy-duty saber that can cut through or bend other sabers (placing them out of alignment with their emitters and thus shattering them) but it needs said exhaust ports as a clumsy workaround as well as a master of the Force using it to keep everything in alignment or it'll shatter and explode. So less Force usage during battles, but this thing can cut through even oh... starfighter level shields to say nothing of making singed mincemeat of everything else.

It'd be an interesting way to deter the hero/ine from relying on long-winded and unbearably dull lightsaber duels. Go back to the Kendoesque roots. A few blows and if that saber hits your saber you're completely disarmed. That'd be cool.

The crossguard idea isn't bad in terms of mechanics (fencing in high school and college yo) but ultimately Star Wars is soft sci-fi and its silly to speculate as to how these things should work. It's simply a question of how lightsabers work in terms of doing something cool for the story.

  • The rebel pilot cockpit scene was classic Star Wars. Lots of water too, so that's an interesting new environment for an X-wing scene.
  • I liked the location of the X-wings flying over water, with the foggy mountains in the background.
  • The Aurebesh writing on the rebel pilot's flight jacket says "PULL TO INFLATE." I lol'd.

Another thing to briefly note with this: The dude appears to be bruised and bleeding. Seems out of place for simply a fly by shot, so I'm guessing there'll have been a fight before the pilot manages to get into his cockpit. Perhaps the Empire attacks whatever base they're at?

Also stabilised gif of the Falcon.

Agreed actually, because characters in Star Wars would be far more impactful and interesting in this universe at this point if they ****ing DIDN'T have lightsabers, never mind lightsabers with dumb gimmicks slapped onto them.

Well I saw the trailer and the characters seem interesting my only concerns are the lightsaber, that rolling astromech droid, and all of the camera shaking I hope that was just for the trailer.

edit: I would like to see some actual man made pieces for droids and ships, not just CGI sort of takes away from the magic.

This'll sound dumb, but I might actually be a little more accepting of this lightsaber, if both our theory about the hilt being exhaust vents for an unstable blade is true and if those exhaust energy beams were much shorter and looked less like actual lightsaber beams.

And I do like Prosps notion about the lightsaber not needing exhaust ports because it's a poorly put together lightsaber, but because it's an overpowered lightsaber that could possibly cut through or even shatter other lightsabers. That would make for a pretty impactful moment for an audience. If Ridley/Kira ignites her lightsaber and steps forward to engage in that battle, and then her lightsaber is just turned into a fireworks display nearly killing her by this new blade.

More outside the box and original shit plzkthnxbai.

I was watching JeremyJahns and he said something along the lines that it would make sense for lightsaber technology to be lost in this day and age, so different cultures would have to come up with their own designs.

As far as droids go the only droid I ever liked in starwars was C3PO.

There was a leak suggesting one of the first big quotes of the movie was Han Solo saying something along the lines of "were going home ". Could the watery world be corellia, or maybe the ice world is endor or maybe even its a reference to tatooine. Anyone got any ideas on this?

Water or snow world could maybe even be kadhyyyk and he was talking to chewie

No idea, either way I'm so thankful that those world's look so Earhlike and naturalistic, you have no idea. It's the most authentically Star Wars thing I've seen in awhile....until that one lightsaber shot I guess, but it's redeemed by the following shots of the Falcon back on Tatooine pursued by TIE Fighters. A scene that looked like it had some actual style and direction to it given the camera movements and the movements of the ship's themselves.

And at the very least, they tried to show everyone as much Star Wars representation as they could, for the very first teaser, you have Stormtroopers, fresh new characters, familiar worlds, lightsabers (despite my own personal opinions regarding them), mythical tonality, the right and appropriate aesthetic, X-Wings, TIE Fighters, droids, bad dudes and the Millenium Falcon.

If the first actual trailer gives me more of that with some actual context, I guess I'll be happy as I can possibly be by that point.

As it stands now, consider me thoroughly whelmed.

Wait, Kaeb is satisfied with this? Let's hope this lasts and that the final product is just more of what we saw but with, you know, a good Star Wars-y plot! Haha :excited:

when it comes to the droid I dont mind at all. the use of a ball is something were doing with RL robots actually
Ballbot_Rezero_2010.jpg

Granted in SW he could have magnetic repulser super conductor like parts that keep him attached to the ball, but a ball as a design option is very very practical on both a transportation/turning /terrain tackling way, but also stability and balance

I think though most of the hate is coming as a knee jerk because they fear the droid will be the new jar jar or chopper

I'm surprised they didn't make the droid companion character a floating one, it's the direction I probably would have gone.

For all we know, the droid might just be passing by an not have a relevant role in the film at all.

He wouldn't be showcased like that among other main characters and he's in concept art with main characters as well.

For shizzle? I have not looked at any concept art for this. Interesting then.

One funny thing is that the reason I was excited when Boyega pops up in the the beginning is because he was visibly sweating and clearly reacting openly and intensely to something, coupled with the wide angle framing and the glint of sunshine on his skin, everything felt real.

We got almost none of that in the prequels.

Also, Ridley's speeder (which I love the design of, especially now that the engines are auburn and not blue like the concept art, because that just didn't look right) was practical as she mounted it, barely any of the vehicles in the prequels had practical elements, I also thought the droid looked practical as well, as was Oscar Isaac's cockpit interior, I was also surprised to see him as an X Wing pilot, not what I expected from his casting at all.

The more naturalistic aesthetic with some grit to it that we get the better tbh.

And as Bac noted, the open, expansive and desolate nature of the environments was very encouraging as well, straight out of the OT aesthetic.

well thats the nice part is that they DID use practical sets and on location a ton, AND had prop craft and such again to interact with most of the time so that already put alot of organic-ness back into the visuals

I don't mind the droid, and while I think the new lightsaber looks silly, the arguments about it's practicality that have been cropping up across the Net are starting to irritate me.

A) R2-D2 is a trash-can on wheels who was completely defeated by stairs for four movies.

B) The saber-staff exists. That alone throws any arguments for practicality out the window (unless you hate the staff too, in which case you're good).

Beyond that, the trailer felt pretty gewd.
