Make a guard out of phrik or cortosis. Oh wait. That doesn't look super flashy and special.

As far as I know, there aren't any canon resistant materials anymore, except maybe Beskar. Who knows, maybe they put the sides on as an opportunity for extra toy sales, Idunno. Seems like an easy toy to break too, so gives an easy chance for many sales.

I always wonder with the cheesy voice-overs who exactly is being addressed. Apostrophic, I know --extradiegetically speaking-- but I like to think there's just some guy with a really gravelly voice and dark side dood robes pontificating in Star Wars Starbucks or whatever.

Other than that?

Not much to say that hasn't been said. Ultimately I'm left with a feeling of ambivalence: some of it was cheap pandering and yes fan-madey (hat-tip: Brandon) but I liked some of the new imagery (soccer droid is kinda cool and who doesn't love the Falcon?) That was more or less how I felt coming into the trailer. Stylistically these remind me of those Blur cinematics for The Old Republic, so take from that what you will.

P.S. If I really wanted to troll I'd also admit the trailer struck me as more John Carter than OT-esque.

P.P.S. Apparently that was Andy Serkis in the V.O. Warm up your speculatrometers.

I went into it without any expectations. Then the voice over and music hit. And I started to tear up a little. Honestly, I think it looks cool. I like how the Empire still seems to be in some position of power and I dont know why but the cross saber thing is reaaaaally making me smile. ^_^ Fave shot of the whole trailer though was when it showed the pilot then switched to the three moving x wings and I was NEVER a fan of xwings.

Hype levels are soooo up for me. ^_^

I think the reason it feels fan made is because they are trying not to reveal too much, going back to old school movie roots and a couple other things. But, to be honest, I enjoy the fan-made type of trailer. I think it's quite refreshing from the overwhelming graphical orgy most sci-fi films give out.

Hate or love the ball droid (I dislike it) it has to be better than Chopper.

Kind of soon to be judging a droid that appeared in a short clip. We don't even know if it's a main character.

I watched it again on YouTube, and Cortan was right - the quality was better than iTunes Trailers. The CGI still needs some work, but overall it looked better. So here are my more detailed thoughts. With the exception of the CGI, which obviously still has 13 months of work ahead of it, I was either happy with or indifferent to everything.

The Good

  • First new character we see is black. Odds are, that will be the opening of the film. That is very cool.
  • Boyega's scene looked intense. Very real. Very palpable. I liked his armor.
  • Daisy Ridley had a cool costume. It had the grit of classic Star Wars.
  • The desert (maybe Tatooine? probably Tatooine?) location had a great look. It was a nice blend of original (unaltered) Star Wars and prequel+original aesthetics and sensibilities. I said unaltered before because the area wasn't busy; it was more desolate. That's what Mos Eisley was like before the Special Edition. I didn't mind the change, but it did alter the idea of Tatooine a bit, turning it from this backwater planet into a more bustling spaceport.
  • New stormtrooper helmets. I like it.
  • The stormtrooper scene was pretty intense too. I liked that.
  • The rebel pilot cockpit scene was classic Star Wars. Lots of water too, so that's an interesting new environment for an X-wing scene.
  • I liked the location of the X-wings flying over water, with the foggy mountains in the background.
  • The Aurebesh writing on the rebel pilot's flight jacket says "PULL TO INFLATE." I lol'd.
  • The snowy forest environment with the evil dude was cool. I was talking to someone earlier and they theorized that the snowy forests could be Endor, and that the Death Star altered its environment somewhat (in a nod to the Endor Holocaust theory). That would be cool.
  • As far as black robes go, I like the evil dude's robes. They look a little more worn and tattered, as opposed to the squeaky clean robes worn by Darth Maul, Count Dooku, and Darth Sidious in the prequels.
  • The evil dude also moves with a bit of an intensity that I like.
  • The Millennium Falcon is, of course, awesome.
  • All of the characters look like they're on a search for something, or racing towards something, culminating in a battle with the Falcon. Suggests to me that the story will be some sort of quest to find something - probably Luke - which results in a conflict.

The Indifferent

  • The Khan-esque voice-over. Meh. It hints at the plot, but it was a little too similar to JJ Trek.
  • The ball droid. Doesn't really bother me, but don't know enough about it to say one way or another. Concept art indicates that it's some sort of companion to Daisy Ridley, however.
  • Daisy's speeder was kinda weirdly shaped, but whatever. No biggie.
  • The lightsaber. I get the ambivalence, but at the same time I don't really care. Same with the Inquisitor's lightsaber. I do like the theory that the two saber spikes are energy exhaust from a shoddily put together weapon.
  • The evil dude. Judgment reserved until I actually know something about him.

Like this. Almost 100% only I don't mind the CGI as much. But then again it's probably because from what I saw it looked a bit more believable/better blended than the CGI in the prequels (which you can argue is no excuse for bad CGI, but I don't think it's that bad overall). I mean, I definitely think there is room for improvement and I want to see some improvements in the next 13 months. But I don't think it was anything to get mad about. At least not until I've seen more. EDIT: I really thought the Falcon scene was well-done, IMO.

Also, I didn't even think to check to see what the aurebesh said on the vest, and now that I know I can't help but laugh.

Ridley's costume made me think of Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia. 10/10

I don't think the clip with Boyega will be the start of the movie. I think that Boyega is going to be a main focus at the beginning of the movie and the audience is basically going to follow him throughout his day until they get to a big battle. I'm guessing that there will be some sort of Imperial attack that goes underway (hence the tie fighters vs. Falcon) and Boyega is a part of a squadron sent to land on Tatooine. We can see in the part where they show all the Stormtroopers that the camera tends to focus on one in particular, who I am assuming is Boyega. I predict that his ship will end up crashing and he will awaken (heh) in the abandoned dunes of Tatooine. There was also some leaked concept art that showed a crashed TIE fighter, so that could be something.

I heard two rumors, one being that when the X-Wings are flying over the water by the mountains, they are on Yavin 4. The rebels could have gone back to the base after the second Death Star was destroyed. I also heard that the snowy scene takes place on Endor. The cloaked villain could be trying to get back to the original site where Vader was burned in order to try and salvage his cloak/armor, another idea explored in the leaked concept art.

The series of events is this, from what I've heard:

- Boyega crashes, hence why I think that'll be the opening shot. Star Wars generally starts in the middle of things, rather than showing you everything; I'm inclined to believe we'll see the aftermath of a battle, in which he crashed.
- He's attacked by some people. Daisy gets rid of them.
- Daisy and Boyega join up, and then get the Falcon.

I like that Diasy has a Tuskens Raider spear on her speeder.
And isn't she the one who supposedly lives in the fallen AT-AT?

She is in the concept art, at least.
