Cuun Trattok'or, Our Fall. Vúlfurian song originally about the Mandalorian cataclysm, now mostly reframed as a song about the Great Purge.

BIOGRAPHY

Born to Mandalorian bounty hunter Khusēh Vúlfur and cantina waitress Kilauv Dijza, Ferus lived much of his earliest life as he was born: wandering from planet to planet on a starship as his father pursued his bounties across the Outer Rim. A direct descendant of the Vúlfurian heir, the Nite Owl Marh Vúlfur who fought alongside Bo-Katan Kryze during the Great Purge, Khusēh was raised in a Mandalorian covert and spent much of his life tolling as a bounty hunter, growing increasingly discontent with the ruinous fate of Clan Vúlfur as he learned more about their forgotten past. The birth of his son only served to increase this perception, as the dangerous life he led would wound up putting his infant son and wife in the way of danger several times.

From his first moment, Khusēh attempted to raise his son as a Mandalorian verdgoran, the warrior-artisans of Vúlfurian legend, as a way to preserve the increasingly distant traditions of Clan Vúlfur. However, living amongst the hives of scum and villainy of the Outer Rim, as well as exposure to the increasingly common presence of the zealous Children of the Watch sect within Mandalorian coverts posed a risk to Khusēh’s intentions. Furthermore, Kilauv would eventually prove unable to live the nomadic life of the Mandalorians, vanishing into the crowd one night as Khusēh pursued a bounty in Tatooine. Returning to find his son abandoned and his loved wife gone, Khusēh retreated into a profound melancholy unlike any he had ever experienced. Exposed to a hostile environment and now lacking a motherly figure, Khusēh also felt that all Vúlfurians inevitably are destined to pursue the aimless and fleeting life of a bounty hunter. Growing detached from the world and his son, Khusēh pursued increasingly dangerous bounties that’d sometimes leave him wounded and unable to care for his boy. Ferus would often be left in the care of droids, instilling within the boy a sympathy towards the machines and a liking for the insides of a starship.

Khusēh would only find something to renew his hope a year later when he talked to another Vúlfurian living as an armorer of a Mandalorian covert, who pointed him to the existence of an ancient Vúlfurian legend: the Aranov, a lost and forgotten underground fortress built during the earlier years of the Galactic Empire’s reign to preserve the Vúlfurian tradition. Khusēh and his two-year-old son would spend the next seven years traveling from planet to planet, pursuing the mythical Aranov and the many wonders contained within.

Ferus grew amidst a frantic and almost fantastical adventure that spanned a third of the galaxy, while slowly being taught by his father the skills of a warrior-artisan. These years were incredibly formative for Ferus, who grew accepting of the variety of cultures and species he encountered across his travels while also developing a form of wisdom while dealing with these strange people at the edges of the galaxy.

Their pursuit eventually took them to Zanbar, where they finally uncovered the hidden Aranov, but the fantastical adventure had a tragic end, for the Aranov was now but a pale shade of what it was once meant to be. The fortress had remained for a century abandoned, the underground rooms now buried under tons of rubble. Khusēh spent the last of his credits purchasing several stevedore and maintenance droids, with the goal of fixing even a small portion of the Aranov. These droids would often break down, further instilling within Ferus a knack for their repair and a liking for their company. While the droids repaired small sections of the fortress and Ferus' training continued, Khusēh would often have to leave his son to fend for himself as he pursued perilous bounties to raise enough credits to sustain his endeavor.

Ferus soon came of age according to Mandalorian culture, and although his father believed his education not yet complete, Khusēh wanted to mark the milestone with a rite of passage. The two ventured into the blistering wastes of Mandalore, venturing through Vúlfurian ruins to learn more about their ancestor's fate. The two traveled through bunkers, factories, and ancient estates, allowing Ferus to witness first-hand how the Empire had meticulously stolen or destroyed everything that the Vúlfurians once proudly owned. Nonetheless, Khusēh used the wastelands of the past to illustrate lessons about the New Mandalorians, the Death Watch, the Mandalorian Civil War, and the Great Purge. A harrowing but equally wondrous experience, the voyage marked the young man profoundly, instilling within him a sense of duty to the ancient Vúlfurian traditions and a certain degree of revanchism against those who’d follow in the Empire’s footsteps.

The years passed and only a minute section of the Aranov was successfully excavated and repaired, barely enough to allow Khusēh to fulfill his plans for his son. With his fantastic adventure coming to an abrupt end, Ferus found himself suddenly drowned within his father’s lessons: the principles of combat and warfare, the intricate art of crafting weapons and armor, the maintenance of vehicles, starships and hyperdrives; Mandalorian history, and even a basic understanding of commerce. The son found himself following a strict training doctrine, altogether stripped of the wonder of his earlier life. The sparring lessons would be the worst part, with his father or the reprogramed stevedore droids often dishing out painful injuries as the training progressively escalated. The fruits of these hardships proved exactly what Khusēh wanted, the boy developed into a tall, burly, but highly intelligent man, equally suited to the battlefield as he was to the forges. A true verdgoran, whose rite of passage was the crafting of an excellent suit of Mandalorian armor, made from the finest of durasteel and duraplast acquired by Khusēh, and strong Vúlfurian beskar recovered from the ruins of the Aranov by Ferus himself.

This life would come to an abrupt and unfortunate conclusion, abrupt enough to now drive Ferus to look back into these trying times with a certain degree of nostalgia. In need of cash, Khusēh took another job as a bounty hunter, leaving his son to attend to the Aranov. Awaiting for his father's return, while dutifully sticking to his appointed training and studying regimen, the days turned into weeks, the weeks turned into months, and the months turned into years. Khusēh never returned, and Ferus eventually accepted that his father had probably passed on a distant world, his death just as unremarkable as all the others. Unbeknownst to him, his father had been killed by ancient enemies of the Vúlfurian as he pursued a bounty into the territories of the newly reformed Sith Order.

Guided by Khusēh his entire life and with his training incomplete, Ferus found himself aimless for the first time. Spending so long in complete solitude while reflecting on what he should do, Ferus grew increasingly introspective and independent as he matured into his own, dealing with his grief without any emotional support and accompanied only by the droids attending to the Aranov. His pain slowly became confidence as Ferus exhausted all the training and learning opportunities left by his father, finding renewed hope in the ancient Vúlfurian traditions and a forgotten sense of wonder. Ferus garnered his resources and ventured into the unknown, partly in pursuit of a sense of fantastical adventure he once had, and partly to dutifully pursue his father’s wish: to preserve the traditions of Clan Vúlfur. The history of Khusēh Vúlfur had ended, but the tale of Ferus had just begun.

PERSONALITY

Ferus prides himself on his inventiveness and creativity, his unique perspective, and vigorous intellect, considering these as living proof of his profound connection to the ancient Vúlfurian traditions. The young verdgoran has an unending stream of consciousness, a constant flood of thoughts that might range from wild daydreams to precise observations of his surrounding environment. He moves from project to project, building the useful and the superfluous for the fun of it. This constant thinking can have the effect of making him look pensive and detached, but Ferus is quite relaxed and friendly when he is with people he knows or with whom he shares interests.

Although Ferus became more stern and serious after his father's disappearance, the wonder of his childhood adventures still somewhat lives within him, hiding somewhere where his melancholic core can’t find it. This sense of wonder often manifests in a profound love for exploring with his hands and eyes, touching and examining the world around him with great curiosity. However, his core ensures that his decisions stem from a sense of practical realism and a profound need to do things right, and to figure out what is right.

His social isolation has made Ferus somewhat socially inept, having particular difficulty in predicting the emotions of others. The verdgoran is very detail-oriented, analytical, and thoughtful, which causes immediate estrangement in most people. However, these aspects of his personality do not immediately bother Ferus, as he prefers being alone most of the time, mostly because to function well, he needs information, time alone to think, and a plan from which to operate. However, when forced into social situations, Ferus tends to avoid tension and attempt to restore unity wherever discordance lies and can often become assertive if an initially diplomatic approach seems impossible.

SKILLS

Ferus’ greatest abilities lie among his exceptional knack for projecting, constructing, and maintaining everything from weaponry and armor to vehicles, droids, and starships. He has devoted his life to the improvement and meticulous refinement of his work, believing strongly that a warrior can be extremely skilled, but all of it would be wasted if his equipment is of subpar quality or poorly maintained.

A belief reflected in his approach to combat: Ferus shows a distaste and inaptitude for melee combat, strongly preferring to take his engagements at range and with appropriately superior firepower. Even when forced into close-quarters Ferus strongly favors the use of scatterblasters and heavy blaster pistols. This ineptitude for hand-to-hand combat is a consequence of his preferred style, severely lacking in agility and placing emphasis on powerful strikes and endurance that could be easily exploited by his enemies.

Whatever aptitude and talent he lacks in close-quarters combat, the verdgoran has in blasterslinging, showing a natural talent for the use, construction, and maintenance of repeating blasters, blaster rifles, carbines, cannons, scatterblasters, and especially blaster pistols. Recognizing this and admitting his disinterest in melee and hand-to-hand combat, Khusēh imprinted within Ferus a pragmatic approach to warfare. Armed with an extensive selection of weapons, the knowledge on where and how to use them, and a broad array of tactics that range from the historically attested to the unorthodox, Ferus will often prefer the quickest and most mundane solution to a battle, a no-nonsense approach favoring the use of overwhelming firepower. Explosives fit neatly into his style and are often among his favored weapons, but he will often forgo their use due to their messiness.

Ferus has also trained on the operation of an extensive array of starships thanks to Aranov’s simulators, having practiced the piloting of shuttles, freighters, starfighters, bombers, and gunships. However, there is only so much knowledge of actual space warfare possibly taught by simulators. Despite having shown to be decently skilled at the use of all starships previously mentioned, Ferus has only ever operated his father’s old Wayfarer-class Medium Transport outside of the simulators and has never fought an actual starship battle. His lack of experience might prove disastrous if he was to engage an experienced and skilled starfighter.

Outside of his more mundane abilities, Ferus also received a somewhat more traditional education, certainly uncommon for most Mandalorians of his age. Taught not by his father but by a selection of weighty books gathered across the galaxy and a particularly vicious protocol droid, Ferus learned the principles of mathematics, economics, commerce, philosophy, physics, chemistry, and the academic approach of the military sciences taught within the Imperial Academy and the New Republic Academy. Although drilled into his brain, the finer points of these teachings will remain lost on the woefully inexperienced Ferus, until he has grown wise enough to make the proper connections.

Lastly, Ferus received basic survival training for most of the commonly inhabited planetary biomes, and has shown certain aptitude for linguistics. He is fluent in Galactic Basic, Mando’a, Droidspeak, Huttese, Durese, and Rodian.
