I'm sorry, but you argument is completely invalid. I grew up fluent in German, with a heavy German accent, by the time I was 10, I had grown out of it. I now have a North Dakotan accent, having lived here only 2 years.

Well that doesn't really count though....

You said you lost the german accent by 10? that means you started learning english several years before that, as a boy. The younger you are, the easier it is to learn new languages and new pronunciations.


And I don't know if I could distinguish a North Dakotan accent from a South Dakotan from a Wisconsonian or Montanian.

I now have a North Dakotan accent, having lived here only 2 years. My mother, one of your immigrants, grew up in Germany, naturally having a deep German accent. She now has the slightest German accent, as she is trying to keep it.

Basically, everything you have posted just went out the window with these examples. You can change accents, and the way you talk, it is really easy and I have been doing it every time I moved.

Perhaps you couldn't, however you would know I did have a distinct accent. And the same also went for wherever I moved, I sounded Texan while living in Texas, my German accent revived itself when I moved back to Germany, etc and so on.

He also mentioned his Mom who lost her accent for the most part. And according to him, she was trying to keep it.

Its human nature to treat differently those who look or act..well..different. And when that isn't enough, we'll fight each other over the smallest thing that could make us stand out. Doesn't necessarily apply to everyone either.
