DESCRIPTION
The Guidestar-class light freighter is a cargo transport which was originally developed by the Core Galaxy Systems corporation during the Old Republic era. Dating from around the same period as the company's Dreadnaught-class duraclad, the Guidestar shares the same asymmetrical design language as other CGS products of the era; despite its appearance, it was considered a solid, reliable ship in its time, and was popular in the Galaxy for some time with mid-level transport firms, independent freight haulers and couriers.

The Guidestar is, without question, an odd-looking craft. 48 meters in length, it has a rounded, oblong central fuselage, flanked on one side by an outrigger engine nacelle, and on the other by a long, blocky duranium shield. Predating the common adoption of deflector screens by civilian spacecraft, the Guidestar's shield was meant as a primitive substitute; the idea being that a pilot could angle it toward the heaviest source of any incoming fire, while using the ship's - for the time - impressive defensive armament to fend off any small craft that might try to get around it. In the present day, most surviving original Guidestars and all new production examples are fitted with conventional deflectors.

For capacity, the Guidestar is meant to be crewed by a compliment of 3, including a pilot, copilot and sensor operator. In practice, the ship can be flown by a single individual, although at least a copilot is desirable; each crew-member is afforded their own (tiny) cabin, a desirable feature for long-haul flights. Passenger capacity is 7 individuals, with 3 2-berth cabins and a single 1-berth "stateroom". Amenities include a small galley with an autochef and a small booth-style lounge in a recess off the main corridor, with an integrated holographic entertainment system. In addition, the Guidestar carries consumables for 2 months in space and has a payload capacity of 80 tons.

The Guidestar's stock armament consists of 2 retractable dual light laser turrets, 1 each on the dorsal and ventral main hull, which are controlled remotely from the bridge; there is also a pair of fixed medium laser cannons mounted under the bridge, firing forward. This was considered quite heavy firepower for a civilian light freighter when the Guidestar was first developed, but might be considered below average now. Performance, likewise, was impressive then, but only middling now; 50 MGLT is the stock top speed, with a class 2 hyperdrive.

The Guidestar was very popular in its day, it ultimately hit its stride and was dropped by Core Galaxy Systems long before the company's eventual bankruptcy and liquidation during the latter centuries of the Old Republic. Although the majority of the company's assets were bought by Kuat Drive Yards, some of their older designs were acquired by Rekklemat Products, a firm which had long been in the business of recycling obsolete ships and vehicles for the contemporary market. Since then, the Guidestar has been available from various Rekklemat dealerships, well into the modern day; though not common, they can still be found in service in some parts of the Galaxy. Though modern examples are considered more reliable, original CGS-built examples are highly desirable and collectible.

LEGALITY
Legal. Light freighters such as the Guidestar are considered innocuous enough under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

INTENT
To create an old light freighter with a unique, asymmetrical appearance.
