I didn't realize there was a humane way to execute someone. Or maybe I should say " killing is human nature, and therefore all killing is humane"

Either way, how someone dies is irrelevant to the reason for their death.

but he is also a retired officer from the galactic alliance. Even enemy combatants are given rights to a trial. This is a fair trial, and it's good my my character and faction development. So yeah, it's necessary.
