I'm trying to get back into 'photo-manipulation'

So, as the title says, I'm trying to get back into photo / picture-manipulation, and I started with something rather simple today. If anyone more experienced could give me a few pointers, it'd be very much appreciated.

You might want to redo the other black lines in the image as there's a mismatch in tone now.

If you used two separate layers, merge them and adjust the levels so the tones in the blacks match.
