Isn't the vote still going on?

Like, polls are projecting a land-side victory, but I thought they were still counting the votes.

At the time of writing this they've counted 40 out of 43 constituencies and it stands at about 63% for the Yes vote.

We won.

Swanky. I have to say the support from the Catholic population has been astoundingly refreshing.

It's just been made official, we're the first country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote.

I rarely ever feel patriotic, in fact I can't even remember the last time I did.

So yeah, this is pretty incredible.

My own constituency held nearly 75% of a Yes vote.

Just read the BBC article. Very refreshing.

But this raises an even bigger question:

Cheers and applause greeted the announcement of the results by the returning officer Ríona Ní Fhlanghaile.

How the hell do you pronounce that name?

I got my ass chewed out by a conservative when I said that it was democracy in action, and he said that 'Ireland's population has been brainwashed by the Jewish-Marxist lamestream media.'

But yeah. I'm really glad to see that this passed. Being a strong believer in both Democracy and Social freedoms, this is a win-win. I hope that we look at this big moment for democracy, and perhaps that more social issues worldwide can be resolved this way.

Problem isn't America. The problem is you live in Kentucky.

Yep, and this place is strong with conservatives. Thankfully I'm only a teen, so I don't have to worry about marriage for a while. And with the way public opinion is going, I won't have to worry about the laws when that time comes.

I don't agree with public referendums for this, but if they're going to be held, especially in a place like Ireland, then I'm glad the vote was overwhelming.

Well, in Ireland it has to be a referendum to make it constitutional.

Not necessarily. The Irish constitution does have a section about family and marriage, but there's nothing that I know of that specifically references marriage being one man and one woman. The closest it comes to doing that is mentioning protections for women who choose to be caregivers/homemakers (which in and of itself is a weird thing to have in a constitution). So it could be legally interpreted to say that same-sex marriage is allowed without the need for an amendment to the constitution. I would imagine, though, that a referendum was the safest route to prevent court challenges.

Either way, voting on rights is not something that should be encouraged unless it's absolutely necessary. It can be fine if it turns out well, but there's a serious and ugly downside to that avenue as well - i.e. if it fails, and rights are therefore dictated by the whims of the electorate.

Gotta love them buzzwords. "Cis-Gender Patriarchal Hegemony Privilege" and "Zionist Frankfurt School Social Warrior" are a hoot to read when someones trying to sound smart. :9:
