Do you believe that religion is inherently bad?

Please justify your answer.

rofl, you know, if you sat down and did the work yourself instead of asking everyone to give you answers you'd probably have it done by now.

religion isn't in itself evil or harmful to mankind. There are plenty of religions that have never done anything at all to harm mankind. There are a few religions that are actually beneficial. The problem is dogmatic adherence to outdated ideas. That and the fact that religion is too easily used as a tool for evil by evil people. Some of the greatest atrocities ever committed were motivated by religion, but so are some of the good things that we've done as a species as well.

Sheo, I think he was just asking everyone's opinion.

Religion is not bad at all, though many blame religion for problems around the world when they should be blaming the people who pollute and manipulate it to serve their goals. I've said it before and I'll say it again, people are trash.

Anyone else remember a thread with this exact (or near exact) title started by Sheo several months ago? I do.

No not as long as you arent an extremist. Religion, if you believe in one, is an excellent thing. It helps people be come closer together and allows people to be better people. Again this is the opposite if your an extremist who thinks everyone should believe in what you do.

And he's looking to a bunch of Star Wars nerds for arguments?

You can work anything into a debate, given a vague basing in the subject area.

Hell, I do philosophy for an A2, and I wouldn't've come up with extremism as an argument on this topic. Already the star wars nerds have put an arrow in my quiver that I was missing.

I suppose it depends on where you draw the line between religion and personal agenda. Imo, there's a lot that the Church especially is still trying to control through religious means, and to give credit where credit is due, they're doing a bloody good job at it.

People need to step back and realize and accept that religious guidelines need to be one step lower than law, not at the same level.

Religion helps set the foundation of society's morals, so no, it's not inherently bad. However, the abundance of religions (or lack of) and their clashing views, especially among extremists, are what spawns criticism to them.

I voted no for the obvious reasons that I am a Catholic and try to defend my religion to the best my abilities. (But it usually dosen't work out too well)

I think if there was no religionw e'd be better off, it gives the lower class hope and the upper class power. It's not good, but there are religions that can be good if there is no upper class or a weak upper class.

Once religion gets involved everybody argues and nobody can agree on anything. It seems to be the main root of most "wars" these days, so in that way it is inherently a bad thing.

Just because you're religious doesn't mean you have to think everything's sunshine and daisies.

I don't see it as bad ^.^, just in general I think it is good. Sure there are many issues/etc, but also many good things/etc, I will not go into a large debate nor say the goods or bad as because I am too lazy to say them =D

Oh and

So human corruption had nothing to do with "wars"?

Religion in itself is not bad. The manipulation of humanity's spiritual nature is why so much evil has been done by religious organizations.

Actually after a bit of thought I think it is evil. If evil is the word for it. It is the 'opium for the masses' as one man once said, but that is only an excerpt from a very good argument. I have seen good from it, but usually it's stuff that I think would be happening without religion anyway. It seems to halt the advancement of medicine and it's usefulness. Modern religion is holding the people of the world back and needs to be shed for good to continue.

On a tangent: The corruption and evil spread by religion is human, because everything human will be corrupted. Although Religion is THE ultimate tool for control. The Leaders of the free will must bend to the leaders of the religions and do their best to not offend them lest they call the wrath of their words and people upon them. They are like a gang of children. You dare not hurt them for they will bring more hurt to you but the only defense is to flee before them.
