Ignorant press have failed to realize that actual authorities - i.e. Scotland Yard - didn't imply in the slightest that Ryan was LulzSec.

A DDOS botnet can quite easily survive. Just give the firepower to someone else.
Hackers themselves would be shitty hackers if they get caught. Although everyone can make mistakes covering up their own tracks (a friend of mine is on the FBI hack watch list just because of one wrong number when he was editing something).
