Biography
Mako Krim was born into the Pyke Syndicate, his father a leading member of the Krim family, whose history was steeped in slavery, spice and blood. The values that any individual species hold as positive varies throughout the galaxy. What one people might hold as an ideal, another might hold in contempt. Compassion, empathy, mercy. Words that are held in high regard by many, especially the vaunted Jedi. The Pykes however, wrap all of those values up within one word.
Weakness.
Many accused the Krim family of such weakness, their history of leadership a wavering one. None however could accuse Mako's father of such. He was a cold and ruthless criminal whose hands were as red as those that came before him.
In his son Mako however, the Krim patriarch saw such weakness. Worse, the boy displayed strange powers. Jedi powers. A ruthless criminal, the elder Krim still cared for his son. Covering up for his weakness and hiding his powers, keeping him away from the family and the syndicate. It couldn't go on forever however and as Mako approached adolescence, his father's desire to protect his son from the clutches of the syndicate grew to desperation, and in desperation he took action.
In the dead of night, kidnappers broke into the Krim family mansion, leaving a trail of bodies behind in their mission to abduct the Krim gangster's son. Abducted and smuggled away, the young Mako feared for his life, only to find himself deposited with the Jedi order with little explanation. The mercenaries who did the deed disappeared, never to be heard from again. The elder Pyke grieved publicly, swearing vengeance as he "cleaned up" the family, using the opportunity to dispose of those whose loyalty he found wanting.
Mako Krim found himself in a new and strange home with the Jedi, his nature aligned with their morals but an upbringing that was often in stark contrast with the ideals of the Jedi Order. It was tough to learn a new way, but grew easier with time. Eventually Mako became accustomed to his new life after many years as a Padawan, and was eventually promoted to a Knight of the Jedi Order.
The young Pyke Jedi and a fellow Jedi Knight, Hera Albion, respond to a request for aid by the mysterious Qella. Traveling to the planet of Maltha Obex, formerly known as Brath Qella, the two Jedi find a colony city of strange aliens with even stranger technology being plagued by a Pyke gang who are strip mining the planet nearby using the native Qella as slave labor.
The Jedi travel overland to the strip mine and Mako attempts to negotiate the cessation of their mining activities, leveraging sabotage carried out in secret by Hera. The dialogue devolves into aggressive negotiations, leading to the death of several Pyke gangsters, a slave uprising, and finally the surrender of the Pyke gang's leader with Mako's lightsaber at his throat. Mako then leads a team of Qella warriors to free the rest of the slaves while Hera uses the power of force healing to save the life of the son of the Qella leader, resulting in their eternal gratitude to the Jedi.
