You should be able to tell which members of Congress want to keep their positions or not depending on which way they vote on this.

I dunno, I mean, at a state level it's legal as medical use in over 23 states, Main is looking to legalize it for recreational use, and it's decriminalized in over 15 I think it is now...

This at least showing up in congress does sound like a step in the right direction. The bill probably will fail, but maybe itll a t least get something more going. Legalisation would at least remove the hundred million+ dollars that are wasted on enforcement for it each year. Which you think someone would be using as a debt remover strategy >>

Are you kidding me.

This is the United States Congress man. They waste so much time, they might as well vote on something for god sake

We're going to hit our debt ceiling in August unless the Democrats and Republicans reach a deal. Our deficit is skyrocketing. We're in two wars. We're in one kinda sorta war. Our infrastructure is non-existent. Our middle class is disappearing. We have no real energy policy. Health care is a joke. Etc. etc. etc.

But no, let's talk about pot. Let's spend time debating on and voting on a bill that we all know isn't going to pass anyway.

There's a right time and a wrong time for this particular piece of legislation. Right now is the wrong time.

While that is true and I agree all those things you mentioned should be addressed, it's not like there are no benefits to discussing legalization. If you were to legalize marijuana, you would create legal jobs that would have to funnel tax money from growers, those who tend the plants, those who package it and those who distribute it. Not to mention the tax on the marijuana itself.

You would also be releasing the retarded amount of money spent on people we're keeping/putting in prison (another cost to the government) for smoking weed and selling it (while not pushing or using the hard drugs I might add thoguht that's not the whole case).

It would also allow for the manufacturing of hemp products which would cut down on the prices of lumber, and again, create job markets for those who manufacture said products.

So in that you have got extra taxes, several new job markets and a cut down on prison spending.

As of a few years ago, which is the latest statistic I can find, the federal government would save 2.4 billion dollars and would take in 6.2 billion in taxes. While nice, 8.6 billion dollars is pocket change compared to the deficit and the debt.

And as with any federal bill, there would be a few years before anything actually took effect, so those jobs and what not wouldn't exist for two, three, or four years anyway.

So the amount of money saved and the jobs created don't really justify wasting time on this now, especially when it won't pass.
