I am kinda excited to see where this thing goes. She's obviously done a lot of good for black Americans as a whole, so I doubt she'll get anything worse than a big fine in the end. I don't really understand how someone could self-identify as a different race. The reason I've always been support of transexual people is that they're psychologically incompatible with their natural biology. I see a lot of people arguing the same thing here. But all I can think of are stories I heard when I lived on a Reservation in the United States. Apparently you'd frequently see a 100% white person claiming that -- at heart -- they were Navajo or Mohawk or something. So these people can wear the clothes and sing the songs, but they're tourists in a culture, not prisoners in it. I don't think it's something they've done that is inherently racist, but it's insensitive toward the people who deal with struggles that you don't have to.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert tho

You, my men, should be president of the world.

Seriously though, someone's mother claiming her daughter is of another etnicity, hmmm where have I seen that before? Oh I know, it's the same as one of my country's philosophers, Spinoza. He claimed he was fully Dutch, and thereby his Portugese parents disinherited him. But enough history lessons.

It proves one point though: Americans are still worried about interacial issues. The worst thing is, is that she might be treated differently, if she says she's from another race.

This talk of races is stupid and has waged on for far to long. People need to understand that:
" We're all part of the same race. The Human Race."

Just my (unpopular?) Opinion again.

Sounds like a lot of complicated personal issues and technicalities behind the scenes. When I first read the headlines, I was afraid it might be the NAACP that had issue with her heritage - I'm glad to see they're actually being sensible about the situation. This really seems like a made up controversy now.

Meh. For me they are all humans with different skin tones. Sure, scientifically there are races, but where idiots see black and white (pun intendet!) i see diversity and possibilities.

So.. What impact exactly does the pigmentation oh someone's skin to his ability and will to do right have? Only as much as this person is willing to allow. At least it should be, by all rights

No I should not. Some of my other views are extreme. All so I may not be racist but I don't like how Black Americans call them selfs African American. Same with Irish American and what not to though. But that is because I am a White African and don't see how a Black person in America could be African.

I suppose we began to call ourselves such because it was better than some of the other 'alternatives' that were being used at the time when "African-American", as an official term at least, began to be used more widely in America. It's more or less denoting one's heritage; as African-Americans, a lot of us, though most certainly not all, have family lines that originate in Africa through a history we are all more than aware of. Same with Irish Americans and so on and so forth. It's not so much a declaration of "I'm African" or "I'm Irish", but that some people may be descended from folks who were.

I'm a Black African and I don't mind them using the term African Americans.

She should be fired. She made up false claims of threats and racism against herself, and that kind of behavior shouldn't be rewarded with praise and accolades.

Agreed. I could care less about what she identifies as, it's her actions as a result of how she views herself that should be scrutinized.

As a black person of biracial descent, this lady needs serious legal action against her because a lot of people's time was wasted and some's suffering completely mocked, some of it on a legal level at that.

I, as well as the great man known as the Science Guy, would have to disagree with you on that.

Race is actually a social construct used during a time in which we couldn't understand what exactly caused our skin to be different colors. It then turned into an "excuse" that allowed for the oppression of pretty much every "race" but whites.

But you were right about the pigmentation point. Scientifically, we're all the same race, but are just comprised of different levels of melanin.

But anywho, I'd have to echo Bee's opinion. Shit's super weird.

Uh, I must have totally missed all of that.

I have no idea how I feel about this. I have lots of thoughts, none of them coherent, and I still want to learn more about it.

Uh, I must have totally missed all of that.

She claimed she received threatening letters through the mail. Investigation found that the letters were never sent through the US postal service, and that many may very well be written in her own hand writing.

There seems to be a pattern, if the above is true, of using these events as a means of furthering a career as a rights advocate. Creating situations in which she may excel in solving, and thus gain a more positive reputation and credibility.

I don't trust her. The evidence, in my eyes, doesn't match what she claims. There's a lot of suspicious circumstantial factors as well. The personal drama surrounding her to me merely emphasizes the reason she should not occupy the position she is. At least, not until a through investigation has been done into these cases, and all the legal ramifications resolved.
