Hlodovic had been aboard the Brighthome for nearly a year now, he had grown adjusted to life aboard it’s sterile interior. While the Brighthome was a temple and shelter for many Jedi, it was entirely alien from planetary life, something that Hlodovic and other Jedi were constantly reminded of before dispatching to the surface of a planet for a mission, task, or simply to get away for a time. Hlodovic had underestimated how uncomfortable he would be back in a more natural environment after such a long stint of space life. Things such as the tinny taste of manufactured atmosphere, the weak magnetism of artificial gravity, and the constant dull thrum of the ship’s reactor had become his normal. As such, the sounds of wildlife echoing out from Yavin’s vast jungles, the taste and scent of pollen floating in the air, and the heavy pull of the world’s gravity was entirely alien to Hlodovic. And while this might have been more tolerable to most races, when all these things engaged with his keen predatory senses, it was almost overwhelming.

After taking just a handful of steps from the steps from the loading ramps of the transport craft and onto the exterior docking bay of the heavily fortified Temple. All his physical senses had immediately been engaged with his surroundings in an unexpected manner which had been amplified by his connection to the Light picking up countless lives both sentient and otherwise in his vicinity. Hlodovic could feel the any colonies which dwelled in the cracks of the duracrete, the incubating lives of the planet’s avian eggs which were nested several hundred feet away, and the countless other miniscule connections that the Brighthome lacked. Hlodovic squeezed his eyes shut to try and retract his senses before becoming entirely swept up in the sensations around him, he stumbled slightly as his clawed hand reach up and roughly rubbed his temple to try and alleviate a building sense of pressure. He regulated his breathing and sought out his center, the calm warmth that was the Light to help him in adjusting to the new environment. After a moment, Hlodovic felt a cool sensation wash over him the overwhelming cacophony of noise, scent, and taste regulated itself into something he could more easily tolerate. When Hlodovic reopened his eyes, a female Twilek guardian had taken a handful of steps towards him, a curious expression clearly written on her face.

Is everything alright?” She asked cautiously, her lekku twitching slightly as she approached him.

Hlodovic blinked rapidly a few times, allowing for his vision to fully adjust to more natural sunlight as opposed to the fluorescent bulbs he was accustomed to onboard the Brighthome. He smiled awkwardly at the woman before extending a claw towards her.

Thank you, but I am quite fine.” He replied. “Just unused to…everything is all.” He explained, gesturing to their surroundings.

This elicited another odd look from the woman as she looked him up and down quizzically before slowly nodding in mock understanding and returning to her post.

After this Hlodovic made his way towards the temple entrance, past defensive emplacements that stood in stark contrast to the natural world they had been built on, the sterile design brought some grim comfort to Hlodovic as he continued indoors. Hlodovic found several Gammorean guards standing post within the temple, watching over the Jedi as they made their way inside in ever widening streams. It was an odd sight to see Gammoreans outside of Hutt controlled space, and while Hlodovic gave one of the beings a short quizzical glance, he didn’t pass any harsh judgements but instead hoped they would guard this place better than he had on Lothal. The thought caused the feelings of guilt to bubble up within him once more, something that he pushed down after a moment. That pain reminded him of his dual purpose, atonement and it was what brought him to Yavin IV in the first place.

While he had indeed come to volunteer for to take part in a crusade to not only push back but rid the Galaxy of the infectious darkness that had taken hold of it and purge the vectors of infection that utilized its malevolent powers to leave only death, destruction, and utter chaos in their wake. This crusade and the perceived ideals behind it were something that Hlodovic firmly believed in and knew he had been called by the Light to take part in as a part of his personal atonement. However, he didn’t believe that this was the entirety of what he must do to find forgiveness in the Light and as such, he had come here, seeking the guidance and insight of one of the Jedi Order’s Masters to bring insight into what he was feeling if he could put it into words.

Hlodovic made his way towards where the meditation rooms were and where he was to meet with one of the Order’s Jedi Masters and discuss everything surrounding the events on Lothal, his actions, and determine what needed to be done moving forward to find absolution. Once inside, Hlodovic took a seat in one of the two meditation chairs that had been set across from one another, closed his eyes, and reached inward to find the calmness in his core. While his inner being was typically more tranquil than it was now, the anticipation and anxiety that had been building within him had made the proverbial waters of this sea slightly more tumultuously and choppy than normal. He would work to calm himself and slowly spread his senses out to beyond the room in order to avoid being caught off guard by whomever was coming to interview him arrived. His goal was to find serenity in himself and the clarity to discern his feelings before they arrived, if he still had the time.

Her eyes narrowed. Sweat beading slowly beading on her brow. Her knuckles white from gripping her saber hilt. Alex flicked her head side to side. Three identical saber circled around her…blazing hot. She smiled and lunged forward. Her white blade was a whirlwind as the Force poured through her veins. Her heart beat in time with her steps. Thump…thump…as saber clashed, spun, and sparked again. Alex’ left hand roared with the Force. A barrier coating her hands and arms. A shield of her own making. She used it to block and shove parries away. The Morellian Jedi smiled as she worked. The Force rippling from her feet to burst outward. She spun.

“We yield.” She was suddenly snapped from her reprieve. Her eyes refocused. Her sparring companions littered across the room. Slowly they stood and bowed. “Grandmaster.” Alex returned the bow. “That will be enough I suspect.” The three Jedi Knights filed out of the room while her assistant strolled in. “You should be easier on them.” Alex turned to face the young girl. “The Sith won’t.” Once, the thought of spending her days training for war would have shocked Alex to her core. When her trials were completed, she barely lit her lightsaber. Life had changed.

“You’re late, Grandmaster. Jedi Volsung has arrived.” Ah. “I forgot.” Alana gave her a very knowing look. The Grandmaster shrugged into her robes. Nothing could be done for her appearance. She grabbed the datapad from Alana as they walked. Quickly familiarizing herself with the details within. What was Hlodovic expecting? Perhaps he could have acted better but this was hardly a drastic failure. She needed Jedi who could make hard choices. He seemed to fit the bill. Her long strides carried her swiftly to the meditation chamber. She was a bright light walking into the room. A torrent never hidden. “Jedi Volsung…your sorrow…you should not feel this way.” She stepped into the room. “Lothal does not fall on your shoulders.” No. These failures belonged to her.

Hlodovic had been attempting to enter into his meditative state in order to better discern his own feelings and find peace in whatever the Jedi Master who was coming to meet with him determined was the best action for him to find absolution. His senses had stretch just beyond the door of the meditation chamber, tendrils of his awareness reaching into the hallway beyond. He immediately felt the connection to the other beings going about their routines, the sensation of oneness always brought peace to the Cathar’s mind, the certainty and unity of the collective in the Light was peaceful. That calmness was amplified into serenity as well of the Light entered the fringes of his expanded consciousness, a being so close to the Light Side that their very aura radiated the calm assurity of purpose and a lynchpin within the unity of the Order. A realization dawned on Hlodovic, the one meeting with him was no mere Jedi Master, no they were far more than even a Jedi serving on the High Council, this was the Grand Master herself!

Anxiety would have washed over Hlodovic but there was no time, as the door slid open Alexandria’s own presence in the Force fed into the meditation that Hlodovic had entered. The depth of her connection to the Force and the Light itself burned away his fears, his anxiousness, and brought stillness to his inner seas. When Hlodovic opened his eyes, there was only peace, a sensation he hadn’t truly felt in some time and one that caused him to let out a quiet, stunned exhale. This wasn’t what he expected. She wasn’t what he had expected. Before any doubts could well up in his mind, Alexandria spoke with measured and comforting words. The words Hlodovic longed to hear from his Grandmaster. The words of absolution.

“Jedi Volsung…your sorrow…you should not feel this way.” She told him. “Lothal does not fall on your shoulders.” She continued.

The shudder that rippled through him was an involuntary one, it was a reaction to the chill of relief he felt. The weight of nearly a year of guilt had begun to melt away and it caught the Cathar completely off-guard. He made to speak but found that his mouth had dried completely, and it took him a moment to clear his throat and find his voice once more. When Hlodovic spoke, it was in the hushed and humbled tone of reverence, not particularly towards the Grandmaster herself but more to what she represented and the depth of the connection he had felt mere moments before.

I do not feel guilt for all of Lothal, Grandmaster.” He began in his thick Cathar accent. “The attack by the Mandalorians was no individual within our Order’s fault, it was a choice made by others not ourselves.” He continued, measuring his words carefully. “Each Jedi fought not only to defend the Temple there, but the city as well. They gave their lives to buy time for others to escape devastation that day.” He explained. “This is our way…but…” His voice trailed off for a moment as the feeling of guilt bled back into him. “…I am not without guilt my Grandmaster.” He explained.

I failed in my duty. I had been assigned to protect a group of initiates, to ensure they escaped the planet and arrived safely to our fleets. I escorted them to the evacuation point and ensured they boarded the vessel safely. However, I did not stay with them.” Hlodovic stated his tone more neutral at the beginning of his explanation but taking on the hints of shame towards the end. “Instead, when I saw our lines faltering, I chose to join the fray with my comrades of the Temple Guard. It was because of that choice that those initiates and that pilot went missing.” His head had drooped at this point, his eyes downcast. “I defied my duty. I abandoned those that relied on me for protection. They paid the price for my shortsightedness.” He calmly explained. “That is why I have come Grandmaster. To seek absolution from this failing, to submit myself before the judgement of our Order, your judgement...” He continued, his voice trailing off slightly before he quietly added “…and to find my purpose again.

Alex grunted as she walked further into the room. She sat down with a distinctively unladylike flop. “Look at me.” Her voice was soft as she began. “You made a choice.” She leaned forward to put her elbows on her knees. Her eyes locking with his. “Would I have made the same choice?” Alex shrugged. “I don’t know. I wasn’t there. I did not save anyone.” She was safe on Yavin…just as she was always safe on Yavin. “The war puts us in impossible places…forced to consider things we never have before.” His genuine sorrow was palpable in the Force.

“I had never taken a life until the Sith came to Yavin. I killed a man that day and that was a choice I made. A choice I must live with.” Slowly she shook her head. “I’m not going to pass judgment Hlodovic…for there is no judgment to pass.” Who was to say she would not have done the same in his shoes? “You chose to stay and fight. How could you know what would happen to the Initiates when they took off? If you stayed, you may have joined them in the Force.” Alex’s eyes tripped skyward for a moment. “Mourn them. As we mourn all our lost brother and sister but do not blame yourself.” Alex’s voice suddenly grew an edge. “Blame those you are truly responsible. The Mandalorian dogs and their Sith masters."

“You want answers? There are you answers.”
The Force pushed her forward. “How can you atone? We find justice for those lost. We fight. If you have the stomach for it.” Alex leaned back. Like Hldovic she was tired of losing. Tired of watching her friends and family die. Absolution through victory was what they needed.

Look at me.” Alexandria had said before allowing herself to fall into the meditation chair across from Hlodovic.

She had listened to what he had to say, she heard his inner most fears, regrets, and need for absolution. Hlodovic remained silent as she spoke, his feline eyes lifted from their downcast position and focused solely on her. He had come expecting condemnation, but instead she brought words of comfort and encouragement. She spoke of the hard choices they both had made, the consequences of those, and the importance of accepting those while moving forward. This was, unexpected, the effect was as well, a year’s worth of guilt, depression, and anxiety melted from his shoulders and sloughed to the floor.

Freedom.

The feeling elicited a small and wavering sigh of relief from the massive Cathar. His body relaxed, muscles that were tensed in apprehension, unbound themselves and allowed Hlodovic to take a more relaxed posture. As the Jedi Grandmaster turned her eyes upwards towards the glass ceiling of the room, she spoke of mourning the fallen and remembering them. Hlodovic found his gaze following her own, his mind wondering if the fallen Jedi had found peace in that oneness and if they gazed down upon them now.

Then her tone shifted. It was etched with something cold and harsh. For a moment, Hlodovic was reminded of the icy chill of hate he had felt through the Light on Lothal but that couldn’t be the case, could it. Before he could speak, Hlodovic remembered an excerpt from his Master’s teachings, Oetro had taught him of the difference between hatred and indignation. Hate was an all consuming destructive emotion, while indignation was a righteous fury that sought cleanse wrongs and bring about the truest form of Justice. His Master’s teachings echoed in the Grandmaster’s words.

The Mandalorian dogs and their Sith masters.” He whispered to himself, allowing for the same cold fury to etched into his mind.

His master had been right, the Darkside was a taint, it was a terminal disease that spread itself across the Galaxy. It infected those that mistook its corruption for strength and drank deep from it’s pestilent waters. It was through those beings that the Darkside spread its influence and brought only ruin and death to the Galaxy. Oetro had preached of purifying the souls of those that practiced the Darkside by returning their souls to the Light. He taught that no mercy could be shown to them, not out of hate but out of pity.

Purity in the pyre.” Hlodovic thought, remembering the Zabrak’s words.

When the Grandmaster finished her fiery invocation, a new prospective would have settled into Hlodovic. His eyes once filled with guilt and conflict, had steeled themselves with fiery zeal. The sorrow that etched his presence, it had all but evaporated at the Grandmaster’s words, instead her words had rekindled the heat of conviction.

He inhaled deep and sharp before responding.

I understand, Grandmaster.” Was his reply, it was laced with devotion to this new cause.

In that instant Hlodovic understood that while he had hoped for peace, that while he had wanted nothing but the best for the Galaxy, it wouldn’t happen. He knew what had to be done, his master had showed him that path and the Grandmaster had reaffirmed it.

I will do what I must to purge the taint of the Sith from the Galaxy, Grandmaster.” He replied

There will be purity upon the pyres.” He thought.

Where do we begin?” He asked after a moment’s silence.

Alex smiled and nodded. Good. She could feel the conviction take hold in the Jedi Knight. A small voice wondered in the back of her mind if this was wise. The greater part of her realized she did not much care. She needed warriors. Men and women dedicated to the cause. The work ahead of them was not for the faint of heart. There could be no second guessing. “Yes…we will.” The Darkside corrupted absolutely. This was an inescapable truth. There was no grey only light and dark…good and evil. The Darkside was evil. “Our road is not an easy one. The Empire has resources we do not. The Republic has abandoned us. The Free Worlds are crumbling. We must forge our own path.” Alex patted her knees.

“When I became Grandmaster, I promised I would not see us repeat the mistakes of the past by becoming an army. I intend to honor that promise, but we need to fight. You, me, and other like us need an army.” Already Alex was making the necessary preparations. “We need worlds willing to fight with us and we need to hit the Sith. I’m tired of only reacting instead of acting. We need to strike out.” Her eyes shifted to Hlodovic again. “I need Jedi willing to take that risk…with me.” She would never ask them to make a sacrifice she was unwilling to make.

Realities kept her from the very front lines. Power invited challenge and there were a very slim number who could match her. When Alex made her choice, she knew exactly who would show. Her very presence endangered those she wished to protect. No. She was not ready to take that risk quiet yet.

"Yes...we will." Alex had stated in reply to Hlodovic's own declarative vow.

This caused a shift in the Cathar's posture, his attitude had changed from that of a guilt-ridden man to one that was attentive and confident. Perhaps it was that confidence that inspired Hlodovic to extend a palm upwards to stop the Grandmaster as she made to monologue of the difficult road ahead for them, of promises she wasn't able to keep. Hlodovic knew this was meant to inspire him but he didn't need anymore inspiration, she had won him over to her cause already. Instead the Jedi simply shook his head slowly, indicating that she should stop her speech.

"No disrespect Grandmaster." He stated flatly. " You needn't attempt to sway me to your cause any further, you already have my full support." He explained. "I only wish to know what your plan is and how I might further those aims." He continued, prodding the Grandmaster for more direct answers to a complex situation. "For while the Light stands with us, we still must have a strategy if we are to eradicate the Dark Side's taint from the Galaxy." He finished, allowing his extended hand to fall back onto his lap.
