Why not? We do not have 2500 active members. Not even half that. If people want to come back and actually contribute, then fine, they can make new accounts. And as for old threads, shit's gotta go somewhere sometime. We can cut the costs basically in half by doing some pruning.

From the numbers you've given us, that's about a thousand dollars a year, and it's only going to get bigger. We've already had to backtrack on site expansion due to technical difficulties, which I'm going to assume wasted monies as well. It's simply not practical to just continue growing and not attempt to cut costs. We have to think about the future, not hold on to archived shit from half a decade ago.

Brandon Rhea is a hoarder. He has trouble throwing things away....

Personally, I say delete everything from June 2007 and before. I mean seriously, who goes read old OOC threads from four years ago?

He has added quite the point to the absolutely-no-****ing-reason-as-to-why-they-are-kept cause.

Here and there, I read some old stuff. However, I'm not sure if that could be shifted into another format which might make it cost less.

Yeah putting them all into the deleted-format will GREATLY bring down costs.

I completely agree, dropping a lot of that data should be of at least some help.

Also the deleting of members with a post count of zero sounds pretty nice(Like Jarek suggested) along with maybe a long with people who only posted once or twice in like 3 years?

Our Webhoster -

http://www.vidahost.com/

Our package?

http://www.vidahost.com/virtual-dedicated-servers

we have a 2node Cloud server with 768mb ram.
we also recently have got a Cpanel license to make it so that other members of the site (such as Brandon) can and is able to make changes to the website without the need to learn command-line lingo..

Why this package? Because we had a smilier but weaker package at two different hosts, and the amount of downtime we had due to the database/system not being able to keep up was nothing other than stupid.

The problem is *not* users. Its the fact that this site, by its very nature, is a roleplay site. This involves essays and essays amounts of roleplay. when your sitting on 1.2gb SQL file, you simply cannot have a weaker system, or you risk the server cutting out frequently which may damage the SQL database in the longrun.

we are looking at cutting the cost, but thats finding the right package with the right support =).

Could possibly consider archiving off posts older then a certain amount hat haven't been viewed in over X number of days. If a thread hasn't been viewed in like 2-3 months on the OOC or Training area and doesn't contain CRITICAL info, might be good to wipe.

Wipe out any posts locked due to duplicate post/spam/troll/profiles that didn't meet criteria for remaining active (too short of descriptions etc)

Things like those posts that were locked for that could possibly just be considered 'junk' data at this point anyway.

Might help slash down some of the data?

Couldn't you delete everyone with less than 5-10 posts who registered more than a month ago or something? I don't know if it would make a huge dent, but if anything helps then it would probably help.

Guys, remember what I said in the first post. If we don't get any donations, we DO NOT lose the site. The donations that we receive will help us offset the costs that we have to pay. You're making things easier on me, Matt, and Hassan by donating. :)

I'm tempted to donate 51 dollars, to get a fancy colour name...
