About bloody time, hardly be the guiding light of freedom with that hole open.

As long as the dangerous prisoners are still safely under lock and key.

He works quickly.
Obama issued 3 executive orders already, I think. There was another one regarding torture methods, such as water boarding.

I remember hearing Bush saying that closing GUantanamo was "impossible."

I guess he just proved him wrong.

He most likely meant that 'impossible because I won't do it', not 'It's physically impossible.'

The thing is, Obama may have ordered its closing, but they have noooooo idea how they're actually going to follow through on that. One of the executive orders Obama signed today, alongside the order to close Gitmo, was the creation of a committee made up of Biden, Clinton, Gates, Holder and Napolitano to figure out wtf they're going to do with the prisoners. So even though he says he's closing it, there are no real plans to do so. This could take a year or more, and could be next to impossible.

They're looking to foreign nations to take the prisoners, since technically they're not US Criminals, but ones charged with international crimes. The article said something about Switzerland possibly taking some of the prisoners in.

Quite a lot of countries won't take the prisoners, though. Bush had said that when they tossed this idea around awhile back they tried to reach out to some countries, but none of them were willing to help. Maybe it was an anti-Bush thing or something, but hopefully Obama will be able to find enough countries willing to take all of the prisoners.

Hopefully Stephen Harper will get his head out of his ass and repatriate Kader.

Well, many countries seem more open to it now. Did you read the article? They described each order he signed, and the possibilities.

Yes, I did read the article. I never said in my post that more countries weren't currently willing to do it. I was just saying that when Bush was in office, they were not willing to do so for whatever reason.

While I am glad he started doing things so quickly, I think this was a bad idea. I think he should have figure out what to with the prisoners first, and then he should have announced the closing.

It's to be closed within a year. Meaning, it's not closing immediately. They're in a state of figuring shit out, but he has every intention of closing the damn place. It's kind of like making it official that it's gonna get done.
