What better way to start the day than meditation?

Any. Any other way, so far as Johan was concerned. No one told him joining the Jedi would mean meditating over, and over, and over and over again. <Å søren klype> he murmured under his breath looking over his schedule for the day. "Why this again?" Anything would've been better than sitting still for sometimes hours at a time, but here they were, yet another early morning meditation session with Master Rhonin. At least he was nice, unlike some of the other older masters at the temple.

Come on in students, take your seats. I'm glad to see all these excited faces. With a cheerful and welcoming smile, he beckoned; brightening the dull aura of the young Padawans and Initiates. Clearly, none of them wanted to be here so early.

Naturally, the young Sverender beelined it to the back of the room, taking a seat on one of the soft cushions spread around the meditation chamber. At least in the back, there was a greater chance he'd get away with doing anything but meditating. Still a slim chance, but he hadn't been caught slacking off yet so he was doing something right.

Johan looked up at the last of his fellow padawans entering the room, wondering if he'd make friends any time soon. Granted, he'd only been with the order for a few days at this point, but even so, he missed his friends and family. Maybe even his old school— a bit of a stretch, but he'd take math over meditation any day of the week.

His focus snapped back to Master Rhonin, his stern yet benevolent voice commanding the attention of the room. Unfortunately, today's class will have to be cut short as I have other matters to attend to later, but there's always time for some meditation first! Delighted whispers echoed through the chamber at his announcement; maybe the day would be so boring after all. Alright, alright. Let's begin now.

Zessel's day started like all the others. He woke up, brushed his teeth, took a shower, went to the dinning hall to have breakfast, returned to his room because he forgot his bag and was now walking to the first class of the day, meditation. Only thinking about it was enough to make him groan. This was one of the most boring classes. Needing to stay seated for hours without doing anything was a torture to him.

It was sad that it didn’t happen in the gardens. He loved this part of the temple.

The meditation chamber was always so dull.

Like most instructors.

The half-Arkanian was walking through the hall that went to the meditation chamber, barely paying attention to what was happening in his surroundings. He was lost inside his own mind, thinking about a thousand things in a short space of time. From what the lunch of the day was going to be, to the newest episode of CSI: Corellia. He wondered if the investigators would catch the Assassin of the Puppets.

Halfway toward it, the Padawan changed his focus to the patterns in the floor. He never noticed that they had so many colors and forms. There were blue circles, red triangles and yellow crosses. He smiled, deciding to walk only by jumping in the circles. It became a game, with him coming back some steps if he stepped in the wrong pattern.

While he played alone, Zessel was totally oblivious to the fact that some of the padawans around him were staring at the half-Arkanian as if he was mad, even whispering about how strange he was.

Due to his game, Zessel ended up arriving late. Everyone inside the chamber was already in position, with Master Rhonin finishing his starting speech. “Hi!” he smiled and waved at the older Jedi, which smile disappeared when recognizing the newcomer. Like many others, he also knew the half-Arkanian's fame of being easily distracted. It was terrible for a teacher with a class that needed focus.

Not waiting for an answer from the Master, Zessel walked to the end of the room, placed his bag carefully positioned near his legs and sat next to another Padawan that he didn’t recognize. “Hello.” he smiled at his ‘meditation neighbor’, before crossing legs and closing his eyes, in an obvious attempt to focus.

It didn’t last even two minutes, because Zessel was soon fidgeting with impatience.

Johan watched as one of the padawans strolled in late with nothing but a simple 'Hi' to offer Master Rhonin. Welcome Padawan, please try to be on time for the next session, Rhonin shook his head slightly to express his disappointment. Letting out a light chuckle, Johan watched as the snowy-haired boy walked over and sat beside him. "Hi there," the corners of his mouth slid upwards, flashing his trademark charming smile before facing forward. Sure he hated to meditate, but that didn't mean he wouldn't make an effort. Well, at least until he gets bored out of his mind.

Closing his eyes, the young Sverender tried to focus on... something. That part still eluded him; what was he meant to focus on? Trying to clear his mind never seemed to work, instead, he just ended up pretending— sitting in silence, eyes closed and trying his darndest to meditate.

Yeah whatever, it still wasn't working. When would he even need meditation anyway? Never, that's when, or so he thought. With an exasperated sigh, he opened his eyes and glanced over at his newfound meditation buddy. Evidently, he wasn't doing much better either, judging by his fidgeting. At any rate, it gave Johan a bit of comfort knowing he wasn't the only one who couldn't do it. "Meditation not your thing either, huh?" he leaned over and whispered as discreetly as he possibly could. Nice as Rhonin was, it still wouldn't do any good to disappoint him.

His fidgeting wasn’t the only signal that Zessel wasn’t in deep meditation, even if his eyes were closed. He was also occasionally squirming in his seated position, as if trying to find a new position that could help him enter a meditative state. Obviously it was to no avail, because the half-Arkanian couldn’t even empty his mind. The Padawan was more interested in thinking about the last episode of his favorite series.

It would never leave him the inner peace necessary for meditation, but he didn’t care.

Zessel was close to simply rising from the floor and walking away, feeling great boredom. Now his thoughts changed from holonet series to going back to his room so he could grab the painting kit that Master Sarbaall had given to him. Painting was one of the few activities that could make him focus for some time.

The half-Arkanian opened his eyes when he heard someone talking with him. This was his ‘meditation neighbor’, who, like him, didn’t seem much interested in finding internal peace. “Yeah, it’s boring. I want to leave.” he didn’t even try to whisper like the other Padawan. Why should he hide the truth? “I really hate this class.” he turned to look at floor in front of him, noticing the blue and green wave patterns on it. Zessel immediately moved his hand, using his index finger to trace them, while thinking that they reminded him for the waves of the sea.

"Do you like CSI: Corellia?" Zessel would suddenly ask the other Padawan, his finger still tracing the patterns, but his thoughts had already changed.

Shocked by his fellow padawan's carelessness, Johan's gaze shot up locking eyes with Master Rhonin. Not good— he did not look pleased but at least seemed content to let the matter drop as he returned to a meditative state. By the force; getting on the wrong side of Rhonin was the last thing Johan needed. With a swift turn, he regarded his partner in crime with a quelling look; "Shhh, keep your voice down! You're gonna get us both in trouble." he whispered, not keen on finding out whatever the punishment was for misbehaving padawans.

Momentarily letting go of his concerns with a sigh, he shook his head lightly as he humoured the boy's question with a soft smile. "I've never seen it honestly." Shows weren't his thing normally, though he'd been compelled to watch some since joining the order with nothing better to do in his free time. "But my sisters used to talk about it all the time." Nonstop, as well as all the other crime shows they could get their hands on. It was fun to listen to them enthuse about it though, even if it could get a little annoying at times.

"A new episode is out, isn't it?" An amused grin stretched across his lips; it was all Aurora could talk about on their Holocall the other day. Not even a 'How are you?' before she started spilling her wild theories about what could happen in the next episode. Fun times, even if he zoned out ten seconds into her rant about one of the investigator's incompetence in the previous episode.

Oh!” Zessel exclaimed, having forgotten that they were still in the middle of class. He turned to look at Rhonin, who had been staring at them with an annoyed face. “You don’t need to be afraid, I get in trouble during classes all the time.” he dismissed the other concern as if it was unnecessary. The half-Arkanian had been in several detentions for different reasons, from being incapable of sitting still to forgetting to make his homeworld twince in a row.

It wasn’t all the Jedi that had patience or understanding that he didn’t do it on purpose, but because he couldn’t avoid it.

The half-Arkanian stared at his ‘meditation neighbor’ with a look that made it seem as if a third eye had appeared in the middle of his forehead. “How? It's the best series ever! Everyone is talking about it.” Zessel was sure that by this point everyone would have watched some of its episodes. At least his sisters did it.

Yeah! It's the last episode of this season! They are going to reveal who was the Assassin of the Puppets.” Zessel ignored the fact that the other Padawan probably had no idea of what he was talking about. He was too distracted thinking about the episode to remember that. “I wanted to watch it now, but I have to be here.” the white-haired boy was annoyed and it made him pout unconsciously, his finger furiously traced the patterns of the floor.

Suddenly, he turned to the other Padawan. He still didn’t know his name. “I'm Zessel, what's your name?

Zessel getting into trouble was all well and good, insofar that it didn't extend to Johan as well. Yes, the Sverender was a troublemaker most of the time, and yes, he enjoyed a bit of mischief but it was funnier if none suspected it was him; something that wouldn't be the case if he made a name for himself being a nuisance in class.

With an increasing level of nervousness, he reluctantly continued to humour his not-actually-meditating meditation partner's antics. "Sounds cool, tell me about it next time," he smiled faintly. Despite being interested in hearing about it, right now he was more concerned with trying not to be too loud, internally flinching each time Zessel spoke without lowering his voice.

Then, the boy once again turned to Johan suddenly, this time introducing himself. It probably could've waited until after class, but at this point what harm could introducing himself do? "Zessel, that's a nice name. I'm—" Padawan Holsen, Padawan Zessel. That is quite enough. Please wait for me outside. Master Rhonin's voice bellowed in an uncharacteristically stern tone, the entire class turning to look at the rowdy padawans.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually. "Sorry master." Johan rose from the cushion with a dispirited half-smile. At least, if nothing else, he successfully got out of meditation class. That merited some relief, right?

Yes! Maybe you can watch it with me.” Zessel was totally oblivious to the fact that he was talking loud again. He could only focus on the fact that someone else could be interested in watching CSI: Corellia with him. It wasn’t easy for him to find friends, everyone seemed to be uneasy about becoming his friends because he was strange and couldn’t stand still.

He really didn’t care, because he rarely heard what they said. Zessel was always thinking about thousands of things rather than paying attention to gossip.

Or to what was happening around him, because he only noticed that Master Rhonin was still here when he heard the older Jedi talk. “Yay!” he said, grabbing his backpack and jumping off the cushion without missing even another second. The half-Arkanian really didn’t care if he would need to hear a lecture later, his mind was already thinking on what he would do once being outside.

Zessel didn't even apologize to Rhonin like the other Padawan did, because he already had crossed the door. The other students of the class were staring at him while he passed by them, but he didn’t even turn to look at them. His mind had only one focus at the moment. Pick his datapad on his backpack and watch the new episode.

Unfortunately, Zessel had forgotten his datapad in his room early that morning.

Seriously?— Johan thought as he looked over at Zessel puzzled by his reaction, giving him a once-over. How the hell is he so unbothered after being kicked out of class? Not like the Sverender was too bothered after the initial shock wore off, but still, the half-Arkanian practically whizzed to the exit before Johan could even process what was asked of him. "You're an interesting one," he remarked with a wry grin intended as a humourous observation.

The rest of their class soon poured out from the meditation chamber, Master Rhonin joining the two padawans shortly thereafter. With a heavy sigh, he regarded the half-Arkanian first; Zessel, I am aware you have difficulty concentrating, but that does not give you grounds to distract others around you in the process. We can figure out a solution to help you better focus on another day, but in the meantime, I would like you to be mindful of your peers in your other classes.

Johan's gaze shifted between Zessel and the greying old master, the latter locking eyes with the young Sverender, a shiver running down the young padawan's back. As for you, Johanes, I understand it can be a challenge to adjust to a new regime, but discipline is the hallmark of a Jedi Knight. That is why you will be spending the afternoon with me in the meditation gardens. Johan's eyes widened as the verdict was issued. The whole afternoon? Just meditating? For hours upon hours? One to one?! Nothing could've prepared him for that, and probably nothing ever would. "But—" We'll have a splendid time meditating out in nature, Rhonin interjected, his stern disposition wiped away by a wonderous smile. Off you go now you two, and I'll see you later Johanes. With that, he turned heel and walked off on his merry way to whatever he had planned.

"You got off easy" Johan quipped, turning to face Zessel. It wasn't fair in his eyes, but what did he know? Besides he could've been dealt a worse fate than spending the entire afternoon one-on-one with Master Rhonin, sitting in silence in the meditation gardens for who knew how long. Well... maybe there wasn't a worse fate, but it couldn't be that bad. Surely...

"What're you gonna do now since we finished early?" There didn't seem to be much for padawans to do in their free time around the temple, not counting their own means of entertainment, but maybe that's just because he hadn't explored enough yet.

Okay?” Zessel said, uncertain of why the other Padawan had said that he was someone interesting. The half-Arkanian always thought about himself being a pretty ordinary Jedi, not having anything that differentiated himself from the rest of his fellow Padawans.

Well, there was the fact that he was easily distracted, but it wasn’t something interesting. Many thought that it was pitiable. Not that Zessel really cared about their opinion, or even paid attention to them.

It didn’t take much time for the rest of the Padawans to also leave the meditation chambers. Some looked at Zessel with annoyance, they were obviously appreciating the class and were pissed that it had ended early. A larger number smiled at him. These were the ones that also thought that meditation was boring, but didn’t have the courage to protest.

Rhonin came shortly after the last of the Padawans left the meditation chamber. “Sorry, I’ll try to stay quiet next time.” Zessel said, a small smile appearing at his lips. It was a bit futile, because he always promised it, but never was able to fulfill that promise. Johan, on the other hand, didn’t have excuses like the half-Arkanian and ended up receiving a brief scolding.

Zessel shrugged. “He knows that I don’t pay attention.” some Jedi weren’t so patient like Rhonin, but the half-Arkanian was already used to it. “I’m going to watch CSI: Corellia, obviously.” he said, smiling at Johan. “Do you want to go with me?

"Sure thing. Let's go!" Not like he had anything better planned. Besides, it'd be a great chance as any to make a new friend— an interesting friend at that. Still, his upcoming 'afternoon detention' loomed over his head like a storm cloud, hellbent on ruining his day. Alas, there was a slim chance he'd be able to get out of that one.

Glancing over at Zessel as they strolled down the corridors, Johan couldn't help but wonder— "Why did you join the Jedi Order?" he blurted without consideration, a look of pure intrigue painted on his face. The need to vocalise his curiosity or worse, his opinions always seemingly won over his better judgment. Even so, it was a question he often thought about. Why did Jedi choose to be Jedi? It was a fascinating topic to the young Sverender, partly owed to the fact he felt somewhat... out of place among the other padawans, deep down questioning if he made the right decision joining.

It wasn't as if he needed the order, certainly not as much as the order needed him. No, he had everything he could ever wish for back home on Sverend, yet here he was regardless. Perhaps asking others for their reasons would shed some light on his own, or perhaps it wouldn't. Still, it didn't hurt to ask and besides, if nothing else, it was as good an ice-breaker as any.

Nice! You’ll love it!” Zessel smiled, his eyes shining with excitement. He never had the opportunity of watching a series with someone else. In fact, the half-Arkanian never did anything else with other people. The white-haired boy was used to having others avoiding interacting with because he couldn’t focus. It was so commonplace that he didn’t even care.

Being alone meant that he could do the things that he liked without being annoyed, but he didn’t mind giving it a new try. Johanes seemed fun.

Then he remembered something important, which made his smile disappear. “But you have no idea of what is happening in the series, right?” Zessel remembered that the other had said that he never watched CSI: Corellia before. “I’ll help you catch up on everything from the last three seasons.” he immediately proceeded to talk non stop about the characters and what had happened in the series.

He was halfway talking about the love triangle between some characters when Johanes made his question. Zessel tilted his head, not understanding what he meant with that. “I was an orphan, so the Order took me in after I was identified as a Force sensitive by the orphanage.” it still didn’t explain why he continued here, but gave some light to his situation. “But I want to be a Jedi because we help people. The Galaxy needs more of it these days.

Johan smiled gently the whole way through Zessel's info dump, absorbing as much as humanly possible— which wasn't much, but he did his best to at least remember the main plot points and characters the half-Arkanian had mentioned. It wasn't all hopeless though, after all, he did have to suffer through his sisters' enthusiasm ever since the show first aired... Safe to say he was fairly in the picture with what went down in the series despite never having watched it himself.

The Sverender's expression soured a little as Zessel responded to his impromptu question, realising it was quite insensitive of him to interject with a quite personal topic. "Oh, I see." he mulled over Zessel's answer before apologising; "Sorry, that was a bit random of me to ask." Truthfully he hadn't even considered that not everyone had the privilege of declining to join as he did. Regardless, the sentiment of helping people was as good a reason to stay as any. Certainly felt more noble than staying on Sverend as a noble— the irony of it.

"Anyways, you were saying about the love triangle?" His eyes flickered with genuine interest; juicy plotlines were always his favourite— in real life and fiction alike. There was always so much drama and intrigue; the pinnacle of entertainment in his eyes.

It’s fine!” Zessel dismissed Johanes’ awkwardness with a gesture. “I’m used to random questions. I do it all the time with the others.” among the several things that the half-Arakanian struggled with, talking without thinking was one of them. It always ended with moments of awkward silence. However, he never was the target of these questions.

It was the first time that happened with him.

Oh, the love triangle!” he immediately changed topics, his focus going back to his favorite series. “It’s between Zadra Naan, Tobyn Lerin and Florin Malus. Tobyn is more outgoing so he is constantly flirting with Zadra and is having the lead in the competition.” while his favorite part was the crime solving techniques, watching their exchange was pretty fun. “Some of their interactions give a good laugh.

Suddenly, Zessel stopped talking. They didn’t decide on something important. “Where are we going to watch it? Do you want to go to the gardens? It’s nice and we would have some silence.

Tobyn Lerin... "Wait, THAT Tobyn! That's the guy my sister CANNOT stop thirsting after." Johan let out a chuckle as he connected the dots. "I definitely wanna see this now," both because the series sounded like a lot of fun, but also to see the dude his sisters have been going feral over. The Sverender snickered under his breath, totally amused by this revelation.

Zessel did however raise a good point— and a good suggestion. "Yeah let's do that, the gardens sound nice." There was no reason it wouldn't be nice and besides, it wasn't as if he had any better ideas. Sure they could always haul up inside the dorms or something, but truthfully, there was no fun in that.

As they stepped out into the open, fresh air, Johan's eyes were drawn to the benches that lined the path. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow on the lush greenery around them. The Sverender was just about to take a seat when he caught a glimpse of a Knight about to leave the temple grounds.

Interesting, he thought, turning to Zessel curiously. "Where do you think that Jedi is going?" He didn't expect his fellow padawan to know, but he was far too nosy not to try and ask either way.

The half-Arkanian laughed with Johanes’ comment about the character. “She wasn’t the only one. There are a ton of people that like him. I prefer Florin, Tobyn is too arrogant.” this is why he hopes that Zadra will end with Florin. The dude was so nice with his shyness, being one of the most fun ones in the series.

Nice! I like to go there because there is always something new to see.” with his focus always changing, Zessel would always notice a new detail in the gardens. It could be a new flower that grew in the bushes, a butterfly or even a ladybug, the Padawan would always find something that in his mind was worthy of being admired.

He was even used to losing track of time while doing it.

Once they entered the gardens, Zessel immediately looked around, taking some time to see every single detail that was around them. There were some things that changed since the last time that he was here. Leaves of some trees were starting to change colors, signaling that autumn was arriving. The fact that some bushes were developing blackberries also showed the change in the season.

Nice, he would collect some later and bring them to the kitchens.

Hmm?” he turned to Johanes, having been dragged by his fellow Padawan out of his daydream. “Oh, he is Omar Karlyn, a Jedi Investigator.” they were the closest that a Jedi could be from being a CSI. This realization made a smile appear at the half-Arkanian’s lips. “Do you want to follow him? We could see a real investigation.

A Jedi Investigator?— he thought having never heard of such a role in the order before. It made sense though, with the aid of the Force surely one could uncover any mystery, criminal or otherwise. Johan regarded Zessel with a lopsided smile, unsure if following the Knight was a good idea.

"You sure that's wise?" On the one hand, hell yes he'd wanna see a real investigation. On the other, however, surely Knight Karlyn would be too busy with his investigation to chaperone two young Padawans. Sneaking out didn't sound like the best idea either, remembering that he was already in trouble from misbehaving earlier. But... It was a tempting opportunity regardless. I mean, who wouldn't want to see a real investigation? Boring people, maybe, and Johan was not one of them.

Mulling it over, the Sverender gave Zessel an exasperated nod "Sure, let's do it. Did you want to sneak or...?" Johan suggested; breaking another rule being the first option on his mind. In his defence, however, his parents would never have allowed him out to witness a crime scene if he was back home still.

Why not? If there is trouble, we can always come back to the temple.” they were also Padawans very capable of defending themselves. “It can be our chance of seeing a real investigation. I always wanted to work with one of the investigators.” it would be as if he was being part of an episode of CSI.

Come on! It’ll be fun!” he said, still trying to convince Johanes of agreeing to go with him. “Don’t you want to have some fun before needing to go back to meditation with Rhonin?” knowing how the Jedi Master was with his classes, he probably was going to spend a long time with the punishment of the other Padawan.

A death by boredom, without any doubt.

Sneak?” Zessel stared at Johanes in confusion. “No, we are going to ask him.” he immediately walked toward Omar. The half-Arkanian waved at the Jedi Investigator, who immediately stopped walking. “Hi, Master Karlyn! Are you going on a mission?

Zessel's look of confusion prompted one of Johan's own— Yeah, sneak... he thought to himself. What else would they do? Apparently, asking was an option. An option Johan was absolutely convinced wouldn't work as he trailed behind Zessel, approaching the Jedi.

The Twi'lek Knight turned to face the Padawans with a smile, his purple eyes sparkling with intrigue. "Zessel, it's nice to see you— and your friend." He briefly turned to Johan. "I am indeed." Omar contemplated whether he should let on any more, squinting his eyes at Zessel playfully. "You wanna tag along, don't ya?" There was a twinkle in the boy's eye that gave it away. "Let's go then!" He said without giving Zessel a chance to respond. It was quite a time sensitive mission after all, one he would disclose to the Padawans while they were on their way to the scene.

Johan watched in shock as the Jedi agreed to take them onboard with hardly any resistance. "What—" he whispered to himself, baffled at being treated with so little scrutiny. Despite his scepticism, he followed the Knight and hopped into the speeder.

Piloting the speeder, Omar gave a rough rundown on the mission; a person was suspiciously murdered, the local police force is in disarray and the Jedi were called in to help. Not much to go on, but it was all they had.
‎‎
Soon they would arrive at their destination, a decrepit alleyway in the middle of the planet's capital city. The whole area was cordoned off from the public following the day's tragic events. Curiously, however, there was no blood spilt and no signs of struggle. More importantly, the victim, a middle-aged Falleen female, seemed entirely uneffected at first glance— besides the glaringly obvious fact that she was dead and laid out in the middle of the alley, her limbs neatly spread out.

After a quick look at the body, Karlyn joined the police captain, leaving the Padawans a chance to peer through the scene themselves.

His name is Johan.” Zessel said informing the Twi’lek about the name of the other Padawan. From all the Jedi living in the Temple of Sernpidal, Omar was one of the half-Arkanian’s favorites. Not only was he a real life CSI, but he also had patience to teach him. The white-haired boy's lack of focus could test the patience of even the most peaceful member of their Order.

Zessel nodded when Omar asked if he wanted to go with him, with a big smile appearing on his lips when the Twi’lek immediately approved his participation. “Thanks, Master Karlyn! You are the best!” the Padawan had been sure that the adult would have given a positive answer. If it had been any other Jedi, the half-Arkanian would have immediately said to Johan that they should sneak after them.

He is the brother of my healer.” Zessel said simply, as if only this sentence could be enough to end the doubts that Johanes had at the moment. He only ignored the fact that it could raise more questions, such as the reason for him to have healer,

The trip on the speeder was quick, with the three Jedi arriving at their destination in less than one hour. During it, Omar had told them about his mission and what they were going to see here. Once they arrived, Zessel saw that the place was a bona fide criminal scene, coming straight from his favorite series.

You two can look for clues close to the cordon while I go see the body.” the Twi’lek passed a box with what they would need to collect the evidence. “You’ll help me with the investigation, but I don’t want you to see the dead. It wasn’t something for children.” Omar said, leaving Johanes and a bit disappointed Zessel behind.

As soon as Omar was away enough, the half-Arkanian leaned closer to Johanes and opened the box. “He taught me how to pick evidence. we need to wear gloves and put the evidence inside these bags.” he showed the plastic bags to his fellow Padawan. “Sometimes we need to use tweezers to pick it.
