DESCRIPTION
The Providence-class battlecruiser is a heavy warship which was designed by the Rendili StarDrive corporation for the Confederacy of Independent Systems, with help from members of the Free Dac Volunteers Engineering Corps. Starting life as an enlarged version of the company's Dreadnaught-class cruiser, it was altered almost beyond recognition during development, coming out as an almost completely new design which quickly came to terrorize the Republic.

The Providence, especially for the time, was a monster of a ship, 2,177 meters in length and bristling with heavy turbolasers, heavy laser cannons, ion cannons, heavy projectile guns and proton torpedo launchers. Despite its great size and heavy armament, it could operate with a crew of just 900 personnel, owing to massive amounts of automation - typical of CIS warships - including a sophisticated central control databrain. In addition, over a million deactivated battle droids could be carried, or about 48,000 organic passengers. The Providence was also equipped with cavernous hangars, able to carry up to 120 starfighters and 24 shuttles.

Of note, Providence-class battlecruisers were equipped with banks of powerful cycler cannons. These weapons were used as both a crude point defense system against missiles and starfighters, and as a savage anti-ship weapon for close in gunnery brawls. Firing huge explosive projectiles, they could generate dense clouds of shrapnel which could shred most enemy ships, and which - at close enough range - were capable of punching through enemy shields and even hulls, destroying systems and personnel wherever they went off. This particular application of cycler technology was firmly outlawed following the Clone Wars, owing to its savage effectiveness against even lightly armored organic spacers. In modern examples, these cannons have generally been removed.

Providence-class battlecruisers, while not as numerous as the Recusant-class light destroyer or the Munificent-class star frigate, were still an important part of the CIS navy. Serving primarily as flagships for high-ranking officers, they anchored key Separatist fleets, and were considered a grave threat by most Republic crews. They easily outgunned most capital ships in Republic service.

After the war, the extant examples of the Providence class were issued a recall order, which caused them to fly to various Republic - now Imperial - worlds to be ignominiously scrapped and recycled. Sadly, very few escaped this fate, although the few that did were able to do so in surprising ways. Some were preserved for study by Imperial Naval Technical Intelligence, subsequently being converted in test mules for the development of new capital ship weapons. Yet more were preserved by the Imperial Navy's 123rd Adversary Fleet, which used a handful of Providence-class battlecruisers - along with other ex-CIS ships and other designs from foreign powers - to supply dissimilar opponents to Imperial war games and fleet exercises. Ironically, the 123rd was reportedly one of the last Imperial fleets left fighting, being most active during the New Republic's Deep Core offensives following the Battle of Jakku; their ultimate fate is not known, unfortunately, as after retreating in good order from the Battle of Singularity 5628 Besh, they were never seen again.

In contrast to other CIS designs, a significant number of Providence-class battlecruisers were operated by the Alliance to Restore the Republic. In general, Rebel Providences were cosmetically altered to more resemble Dreadnaught-class cruisers.

In the present day, those Providence-class battlecruisers which still exist are generally to be found in scrapyards or forgotten mothball fleets. As the Galaxy returns to a war footing, however, many have been recalled to service.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Providence-class battlecruisres are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities. Even then, they are ridiculously expensive to operate; only a relatively large faction or decently well-off planetary government would be able to afford it without swiftly bankrupting themselves. An individual would stand no chance.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
Providence-class battlecruisers are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They may be acquired as a faction asset with staff oversight.
