Uh, correction they're lethal. Both.
I mean...A frying pan can also be lethal.

If you mean how do they cut compared to lighsabers, well they're just literally normal swords with a bit of extra.

Jedi Katana is just a metal sword with force imbued into it. Jedaii used it before lightsabers were made. Simplest as I can explain it.Vibroblades were a type of bladed melee weapon that used ultrasonic vibrations to increase cutting effectiveness.

However both would cause a lot more bleeding than lightsabers.

Shiuzu, don't egg him on. :P

Zen had a question, which Cyclops answered.

Zen, I hope you're not planning on using said weapon on Haloburner Lamb. :S

This is what we all have going into the crucible. You're wondering if a weapon that has been banned on several planets, can sheer metal with ease, and would cause a huge gash with just a small, glancing blow is lethal? Then yea, it most definitely is.

There's a no killing rule in The Crucible.

The Jedi would expect their participants to be mature enough to handle sharp objects and not kill their opponents.

I certainly did not find it funny, then again I lack humor.

Were you born without it, or did you lose it later in life via medical procedure?

What? What do you mean by that?
That was another joke mate. But on topic, allowing them to use katanas in the tournament would be a sign of trust in their abilities. If you are sparring with someone you should be able to trust them to not harm you on purpose, so think of this as belief in the padawans' ability to use the katanas without seriously hurting their opponents.
