but are force powers limited to canon? or are we free to create variants of powers, so long as they're properly acquired and trained through threads?

This should probably go in the Role Play Training section of the thread. It's an OOC section where most of the questions are asked.

As to your question, if cannon material says that a certain ability was developed in a certain era, we usually don't allow it. However, a variant of the ability that has a similar, but still different effect is desired, it's usually allowed. Creating your own Force Powers isn't exactly a thing we do, because it's not really something possible. Almost anything imaginable can be done with the canon Force Powers. One of the most flexible being Alter Environment. The ability basically allows you to change substances into something else, for example, water to ice. An ability I use quite often is technically made up, but it's just a combination of Alter Environment and Telekinesis, the Ice Gauntlet. Grabbing the moisture from the air, freezing it around the hand, and punching someone with it. Then telekinesis to throw the shards of ice. Stuff like that. A lot of Force Power usage is all imagination with the basic abilities known to Force users.

Creativity while remaining relevant to the site and it's timeline is a must on the site, just as Zach said. But don't limit yourself to simply making the viable force power and just saying it's name in an RP. You should deffinately describe how it's used, and change it up every so often so it's still the same technique, but used in unique ways. Take telekenesis, the most common force power. It's used to push, pull, lift, throw, and so on and so forth. Something even more creative would be using it to lift your own body for a short while, allowing you to levitate to a certain point. Then you have Force Glide! (off the top of my head, and this is obviously an example). See the point? :CHappy
