RAXUS VAULTING

The Commander pierced the clouds on Raxus with the steady speed of a ship that had every right to be there. There were not many spaceships that were allowed to enter Raxus airspace and approach the Fortress Vault where the Empire kept the many Sith Artefacts, lightsabers and bled kyber crystals of the expelled Sith Order. Being a commander in the Imperial Security Bureau and -according to some- in line to become not just an Overseer but the next Director himself, Commander Levik Karn's shuttle was only ever hailed once. At the start of his journey to confirm his access codes and the time he was going to land at the fortress for his scheduled inspection.

Levik himself was piloting the shuttle, something he did more often now that he was a Commander and forced to spent more time in an office, and had chosen to take somewhat of a scenic route through the mountains. The sightlines weren't as good here, forcing him to stay low and stick to the natural route through the valleys. His piloting skills weren't bad, but he was lucky that the weather outside was rather nice. It would be a few more hours until the sun started to fall and it'd catch you right in the visor.

"Commander Karn for Fortress Vault One," he opened the commline with the communications officer of the Imperial facility, "This is Fortress Vault One, Commander Karn you're on radar. Ten minutes out. Landing pad three is ready for you and green. Confirm." he received in plain militaristic fashion. Levik checked his ETA and it seemed like the facility's radar was on the credits, "Confirmed."

Ten minutes of leisurely flight and then he'd have to play bored, yet strict, Imperial Inspector. The Empire didn't appreciate it if its more strategically important facilities weren't up to standard and the Peacekeeper Corps had just filed for an updated Vault Security Policy. In absence of the Director said policy had been signed by the highest ranking available peacekeeper; Commander Levik Karn. If only all parts of the plan went this smooth...

Crow was in position. His arrival on the planet had gone smoothly. The information in the data chip given to him by The Tarisian had been sound, so Crow had been able to cherry pick his entrance point. From there he pulled up the route this dumbass commander Karn would take. He stashed The Blackbird, with his astromech Peegee at the wheel, hopped on a speeder bike and made for the mountains a few clicks west.

Crix was dressed in a modified version of the Imperial peacekeeper armor. He kept his personal shield and jet boots while ditching the recording device and Grapple line. He kept both of his dueling pistols on him and added the standard issue E-10 for shits and giggles. There was always room for a little versatility in a soldier's kit, but Crix knew changing anything dramatic about the gear would set off red flags immediately.

After hiding the speeder, The Devil of Denon made his way to the edge of a small cliff that overlooked the ravine. The glint of durasteel in the sun told him he was on time and in the right place. The incoming ship was traveling at a steady speed and a quick zoom in told him it was the right model. Crow crouched down and primed his jet boots. He slipped his hands into the mag pads and started his count.

One for the money…” he started, the roar of the ship's engine closing in.

Two for the show…” the whir of his jet boots reaching full power.

Three to get ready!” Crow vaulted over the side of the cliff and into open air. The ship passed by underneath, “—and Four to go!

He hit the ignition, his boots fired, his body flew, and a few short seconds later he was locked on to the ship. The whole process had taken a few seconds, but one mess up and it would have all been over. Now, all he had to do was hit his entry point and the first phase of the job would be done. Granted… this was the easiest part…

If everything had gone according to plan then the hired gun should be attached to the ship about now. One man's weight wasn't enough to be noticeable in the shuttle's output and Levik hadn't seen him make his move either. So either he had hired a true professional, or the Devil of Denon had missed his mark. The Commander was putting his credits on the latter.

A few more minutes of leisurely flight across the mountains and the Fortress Vault got into view. A kilometer of forest had been cleansed around it, as was protocol, to ensure no one could sneak up on it over ground. Its radar operator had already proven that no ship could approach it unnoticed either. That's why the plans had been so thorough. Speeder rides, jetboots, magpads on a registered arrival. Nothing was left to chance, well.. not every detail could be accounted for.

Landing pad three was designated with a green light and already armed members of the Imperial peacekeepers were waiting to escort their superior officer across the facility. Levik approached the pad, but before making his final landing he dipped shortly under the outward landing pad's line. This way Crix could choose whether he'd drop and attach himself to the bottom of the pad, or risk being seen during landing. From any onlooker it would simply seem as if the pilot was a novice. Inexperienced in flying as shown by his poor landing skills. Some of the peacekeepers looked at each other, but the Imperial Lieutenant in charge snapped them back into attention, "Commander Karn is flying himself," she explained, but she too seemed to clearly disapprove of the leeway the man took with his privileges of command.

Shutting down the engines, Levik made sure to "forget" locking off the maintenance hatch on the ship's aft and then made his way to the ramp. "Sorry for the rough landing, Lieutenant," he smiled apologetically, pretending to me an idiot -basically- but still one that had a more significant rank insignia on his collar. "It looked perfect to, Commander Karn." the lieutenant smiled and stepped to the side to offer the commander free space to walk right into the facility.

"It's the new model," Levik explained, "we decided not to use shuttles that people directly associate with the Sith Order." the lieutenant dry-swallowed and didn't realize that Levik name-dropped with a purpose. Everyone was on edge when you mentioned the former ruling class of the Empire. Especially when the fortress you're garrisoned in would logically be one of their premier targets. "The old ones less susceptible to crosswinds."

The peacekeepers fell in line behind the pair and all six of their headed inside, leaving the ship, and the landing otherwise deserted.

A timer went off on Crow’s hud. Just as he was getting ready to disengage the mag pads the ship dipped, nearly flinging him off the damn ship. Crow just barely managed to avoid death, he disengaged the mag pads and dropped. His trajectory was off and he had to correct with his jet boots. He landed on a maintenance ladder with a curse. The ladder led down to a small platform with a cargo box.

Crix slid down the ladder and dropped the mag pads into the box. Under his chest piece he’d rigged a pack so he could stow whatever this little trinket was, aaaand whatever he could reasonably get his hands on. He took a look around. It didn’t look like anyone had been here for months, good.

He quickly scaled the ladder and to his surprise when he reached the top the hatch was open. The voices on the other side stopped him from clambering out. He stuck his ear to the door to try and hear better, but best he could tell they were getting further away. Carefully, very carefully, Crix eased the hatch open and watched as the group left the pad deserted.

Crow took a breath, now for the fun part. Once the group was out of sight The Enforcer would step out and start acting like everything was totally normal. He even latched the maintenance hatch behind him, not that he thought anyone would check it. He did a quick perimeter of the pad as if running a routine sweep. He’d done his homework and understood the basic procedures Peacekeepers followed, now he just needed to blend in and get to the target.

After completing his check he stepped into the building, quietly, just in time to see the crew of six round a corner at the end of the hall. Crix didn’t stand still for long. He adopted a clipped gait, walking with purpose, and made for his first objective.

Levik hadn't even reached the longroom before the Fortress Commander arrived to meet him halfway, "Commander Karn? What is the reason for your visit?" the human man, mid-fifties, looked at hid much younger peer. In a manner of reply, Levik took a datapad from his pocket and handed it over, "Read Imperial Security Bureau designation fifteen," that one gave the bureau authority to perform surprise inspections on any Imperial facility if it had reasonable suspicion of it not being to code or imperial protocol. Levik stepped closer to his fellow commander and swiped on the datapad's touchscreen to show another document, "and now Imperial Security Policy twelve dash three." which was the updated Vault Security Policy that had gone into affect only a few days prior, something which the other commander was quick to notice, "This Security Policy has barely crossed my desk and has yet to-" Levik interrupted him with a motion of his hand and then took the datapad back, "Are you saying the Fortress Vault is not up to Imperial standard, Commander Lonn?"

The commander exchanged a look with his lieutenant before stepping aside to let Levik pass through. "Not at all, Commander," he said with a played tone of Imperial authority and code of conduct. The two of them walked shoulder to shoulder as they headed towards the Vault's control and records room.

With the Sith Order gone, the Imperial Security Bureau had more or less replaced them as the boogeymen keeping the others in line. Their agents were well-versed in counterintelligence and the peacekeepers -while most were former Sector Rangers- were never shy to arrest fellow Imperials for breach of protocol or violations of the Imperial principle. It seemed clear that Commander Karn was here to set an example for the rest of the Empire, or make them an example if need be.

As he proceeded, he realized he was following the same route as the six from the landing pad. He slowed a step, he needed to space this just right or he’d tip off the peacekeepers taking up the rear. He also noted the familiar formation. The two in the middle were flanked by four guards. Huh. Of the two being escorted he knew one was Commander Karn. Might be a good idea to get a look at this goof he thought.

He chewed that over for a moment when he saw the group stop. He slipped down an adjoining hall, and out of sight. He couldn’t tell what was being said, but from the brief glances he’d dared take it was obvious Commander Karn wasn’t playing around. Unfortunately the guy was obscured by one of the guards. That made up his mind. If it was convenient to get a look at the guy, great, but he wasn’t going to put effort into the task.

Just as he was getting ready to give up, Karn dismissed the newcomers and Crow caught his back briefly, he couldn’t put his finger on it but there was something familiar about that back. Whatever, he’d wake up in the middle of the night three weeks from now in a cold sweat with some drunken revelation about it he was sure. He checked his HUD while standing at attention against the wall at the corner.

Just passed the lounge room, down the hall and to the right was the vault he needed. He was making progress, but he’d much rather be waiting out the ticker down the maintenance hatch on pad 3. He sighed and changed a glance around the corner, the group had swelled to encompass the chastised new comers, prefect. The pecking order of the Imperial bureaucracy was it’s greatest weakness.

Crix slipped around the corner and continued to follow at a safe distance. Inconspicuous as a mouse droid

Before reaching the 'control and records room' they passed the artefact collections counter. Levik knew that room well enough, having dropped off several Sith artefacts during the Expulsion Campaign when he was still just a lieutenant. His role today would've been remarkably easier if there had been a line at the collections counters like there had been back then. He preferred them all to be too busy to notice Crix slipping in and out, after all. Unfortunately the expulsion of the Sith Order had been a success and artefacts were limited, rare, and most of them had already been confiscated.

Next up was the control and records room, which was one of the most advanced rooms in the fortress. Three of its walls were covered in servers and the fourth spanned a complicated and antiquated control panel. "This console," Levik pointed at the control panel as he motioned for the commander to join him in observing whatever faults he had made up. "Is this not the Zetatech-12? A console from Moff Tarkin's time?"

The fortress commander smirked, "Yes, it is. It's reliable in operations and more importantly-" he placed his hand on the shoulder of the Imperial soldier sitting at the control panel, "-can't be sliced into from outside this room." Old and antiquated tech did have the benefit of being unable to connect to modern ports and consoles, Levik mused, considering the options to make his own business ventures safer by applying the same tactics.

"Show me," Commander Karn ordered the soldier, who hesitated and looked at his own commander. "Commander Karn, the vault only opens for new acquisitions and-" a look from the peacekeeper suddenly shut him down as Levik once again took the datapad from his pocket, "Imperial Security Policy twelve dash sixteen. Do you have anything to hide?" the Fortress commander removed his hand from the soldier controlling the panel and dry-swallowed. "Not at all, Commander. We are up to Imperial code. The entire fortress is."

"Open the vault and get me the list of everything it contains." Levik ordered and this time the men surrounding him spurred into motion. The vault door opened slowly and Levik was given a datapad that was to contain all the vault's contents. True to protocol he could not enter the vault unaccompanied, but then he wanted it so. "Right, let's go."

The entire group then entered the Vault, which was a massive room of stacked doors and compartments. Some of the compartments were small, mere drawers that held small artefacts -Sith or otherwise- while others appeared to be massive doors and held object of large volume and weight. At the back of the vault, passed what seemed like a library of forbidden books on Sith cults and Force magic, slabs of carbonite were neatly placed in a row. "Aren't those," Levik muttered as he lead the entire group to the back of the vault to look at the slabs of carbonite, "This is Goro Massa." He pretended like he read it out loud from the datapad that had the vault's inventory, but Levik knew of the old Tarisian Crimelord. Eccle'baal had told him that the Empire managed to convince Taris to join after having rid them of crimelord that ruled the Taris underworld. He was thought to have merely been killed, but it seemed the Imperial Security Bureau had frozen him and most likely used him as a bargaining chip in case Taris ever threatened to abandon the Imperial principle.

Crix forced himself to breathe normally. Even though he was good at it, The Enforcer wasn’t a fan of infiltrations like these. There were two many fraction points where the plan could breakdown. His record was littered with expertly timed smash and grabs, scoops, and buzzer beaters. All this Cipher Six spy shit was for the Imps. And yet here he was imitating a Peacekeeper on Raxus Prime following an ISB Commander who had no clue he was being followed. Crow wanted to puke.

It seemed he’d landed in the sweet spot as he followed the group ahead. He’d matched the marching cadence of the group to hide his steps, and was close enough to be mistaken for the rear guard, but far enough away to— They were stopping. Crix glanced out his periphery, no hallways, fuck. He kept is pace measured, but couldn’t stop. If he did, he knew it’d be all eyes on him.

So, he kept moving. He kept his eyes forward and spotted a pair of guards on the other side of the room. As he passed by Commander Karn turned away asking about some old piece of tech. Man this dude looked normal, as fuck. There was nothing extraordinary about him. Granted Crix hadn’t gotten a look at his face dead on, but he could already tell it’d be forgettable. He was probably the kinda guy that got mistaken for others all the time.

All eyes in the room were on Karn, even now as he walked in the dead center of the room he was stared right through. It was clear the Commander’s reputation was ripping through the rumor mill like wildfire. Crow landed next to the other guards and pretended to be relaying orders, instead he said, “Can you guys believe this?

At first the guards looked suspicious, “What you haven’t heard? This ISB pencil pusher, has been giving it to Commander Lonn,” Crow struggled to stifle a laugh, the two guards glanced back and forth then over to the group, then back to Crix, “Like how hard?” asked Guard #2

Crix smiled, “I can see him sweating from here,” he gave a nearly indecipherable nod in the FC’s direction as a smile spread across his face. The group started to move in on the vault and Crix sighed, “Dammit.

What?” asked Guard #1.
I’m reporting to an archivist in the vault, looks like we’ll have company…
Guard #2 snorted while trying to hide his laugh and all three of them stood up a bit straighter checking to make sure they hadn’t been seen.

Welp, wish me luck fellas,” said Crow snapping out a perfect imperial salute. The guards muttered their well-wishes. He about faced and casually fell in behind the group. He was so close he could taste it, but he was patient. No need to rush, his ticket out of here was still bullying the locals. Instead, he simply sidled up to the space and assumed guard position.

His eyes stayed on the Commander and his posse, but he let it flick to the other guards in the room. Everyone’s attention was on the ranking officers. Most looked like they were going to shit themselves. For the life of him, Crow couldn’t figure out why people joined the military, this shit was terrible. The posse made for the back of the vault and Crow followed until he came to the library. While staying in step with the rest he diverted his march directly into the rows of books and out of sight.

He pulled out his own data pad and pulled up the name of the object he was searching for. To their credit, Imperials really knew how to stay organized. Once he had the name he was able to locate the tome in a matter of minutes. He slipped the code cylinder out of his sleeve and attached it to the safe. A handful of tense seconds ticked by, and then a soft, Beep let him know the box was open.

He lifted the lid and collected the contents, which included the book, a small credit purse filled with, what sounded like, marbles when he’d given it an appraising shake, and a medallion with the ancient symbol of the Sith emblazoned on it. Crow slipped the purse and medallion into his pockets, and slid the book under his armor. He then closed and locked the safe, returned the coe cylinder to his sleeve and walked away.

He had what he’d been sent to retrieve, now was when everything would fall apart and guns would come out and hopefully he’d be killed in the fight and not have to serve jail time.

If everything had gone according to plan, Levik's little "admiration of carbonite slabs" had taken long enough for Crix to steal the target item. There were many of its kind, but with the planet of origin being pretty much closed off to outsiders, its native people very secluded and secretive and their old alliance with the Sith Order not quite motivating them to open up to the Empire at the moment, the Vault on Raxus was one of the few places where Eccle'baal could get his hands on something so valuable to Force users.

But it didn't hurt to give Crix an extra few minutes either. "You there," Commander Karn turned to the nearest archivest holding a datapad, "The Imperial Knights that were Sith-hunting on the planet Corvus," he started, referring to a recent mission, "Did they turn in any bled lightsabers?"

The archivist began to search his datapad with an extreme sense of urgency while they all waited. This was a scene, Levik knew it, because lightsabers and the lack thereof were a sore subject. The Empire loved the micro-manage every little aspect, yet when it came to people doing people work, well, somethimes stuff fell through the cracks. Sometimes that stuff were lightsabers. "No, Commander," the archivist eventually said, "They did turn in several handwritten books on the Sith Order Creed and Basic Lessons on using the Dark Side."

Levik frowned as he looked at the Fortress Commander, "A Sith without a lightsaber?" In other words, did they steal from the Empire, or did the Fortress Commander. The latter immediately understood and was quick to accusations, "Those Imperial Knights must have taken it for themselves," he surpressed a smirk from his own cleverness in dodging suspicion, "Give me their names and I'll see to their persecution at once," he looked at the archivist, who in turn, seemed unsure for a moment until he relented. "Knight Lann and Knight-Captain Demici."

Checkmate. The Fortress Commander immediately turned to Levik with fear readable across his face. He knew that Commander Karn had worked with the Knight-Captain and had even dined with her in a gossip-rich elite restaurants on Serenno. Even if he was guilty of nothing, the thought of the peacekeeper inspector agreeing to persecute someone he's close with based on his word alone? Highly unlikely. "Get me all Imperial Vault logs on lightsabers, right now."

Crow rounded the corner of the nearest stack and caught a glimpse of the commander’s cadre. He stopped. There was someone familiar among the Imps. Someone so forgettable, so ordinary, so plain, that even as he looked right at him, Crow struggled to believe what he saw. He slipped back around the stack he’d just come out of and let himself process that information.

Oh are you with Commander Karn?” asked a small voice.

Internally, Crix felt his soul leave his body. His head whipped around and spotted a small bookish imperial with oversized bottle cap glasses carrying a datapad. Crow’s mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for breath as his brain scrambled for a convincing lie, anything to take this mother fuckers attention off him— “You there,

The bookish Imp’s attention was taken from Crix and down the row to the Archivist's right. From Commander Karn’s perspective the Archivest would have appeared to be examining the end of the row, Crix was just out of sight. Fear drained the color from Imp’s face. Crow didn’t wait for the guy to point him out, and slipped down the other side of the row, weaving in and out of the stacks until he came to a stop about 25 yards from where Commander Karn had unknowingly saved his ass.

Now, he just needed to get out of the vault. While the Commander bought him time, Crix casually, well as casual as military personnel appeared, made his way back toward the exit. The guard at the door nodded at him as he passed by and Crow returned the gesture.

He was back where he’d run into the two guards before, they looked at him expectantly. Without out a second thought, Crow sagged his shoulders in disappointment, and mouthed, “Latrine duty for a month…

The two guards winced. He turned away from them and started heading back for Pad three. If he was lucky he’d be back waiting on the maintenance ladder in no time. But the thing about luck is it normally runs out when you need it most.

It didn't take long before a datapad was handed to Commander Karn with an inventory list of all the lightsabers that were present in the Vault. Levik expected this to be complete, for he had never not handed over lightsabers that had been publically or officially confiscated in the presence of others. What he noticed, however, was that the lightsabers from Junction were not listed as inventory.

Commander Karn thus looked at the Fortress Commander with a look of extreme suspicion. He almost regretted he was here without a full complement of peacekeepers so he could arrest the man and his accomplices right away, but.. this did provide for the perfect patsy for his own orchestrated and unauthorised removal from the vault. Perhaps it was the pot calling the kettle black, but he couldn't tolerate the highest ranked imperial, the one in charge of security of the vault filled with Sith artefacts, to be this crooked. Those lightsabers were worth a fortune, after all, and if he had done it so brazenly with those lightsabers then who knows what more he had stolen to enrich himself. Ofcourse, Commander Karn didn't know that the lieutenant-general himself had sold these particular lightsabers to the Crimson Dawn on Omega Station.

"Commander," he handed the datapad back to the archivist, "You are hereby relieved of your duties and sequestered to your quarters," he paused, looking at a couple of nearby peacekeepers, "under guard."

The Fortress Commander stepped back in shock, "What is the meaning of this? On what grounds?" he asked, anger clearly growing.

"High Treason," Commander Karn explained to the shock of everyone in the room, "I know for a fact that there's lightsabers of prominent members of the Sith Order missing from your inventory. The Empire will do a full sweep and re-do the entire inventory. You will be in your quarters until an investigator-" he meant an Imperial torturer, for that wasn't a practice they had foregone by expelling the Sith. Torture was a strong word, too. It was a device that forced the truth out of people or it inflicted high amounts of pain before rebuilding the brain based on loyalty to the imperial principle. "-clears you of the crimes I accuse you of."

In compliance with the orders, the Fortress Commander was being escorted out of the vault, making Levik the highest ranked Imperial on location. "Everyone out. The Vault will be sealed and won't be allowed to open again until proper protocols and personnel is in place. You," he turned towards the lieutenant, "Escort me back to my shuttle. I will brief you underway."

Crow exited the vault and felt the weight of a star destroyer lift from his shoulders, but he knew better than to get cocky. This wasn’t over until he was jumping to hyperspace. He proceeded down the hall leaving the control and records room behind. Rather than following the exact path back the way he’d started, Crow detoured through the mess hall.

The smell of cafeteria food accosted his sense of smell and made him want to puke. A handful of off-duty Imps were lounging around shooting the shit. Some were already gossiping about Karn.

I heard he arrested the Commander!
Shut the fuck up, you serious?

Crow wasn’t sure, but he was glad Karn had managed to stir up enough commotion to keep everyone occupied. He exited the Mess Hall and took his final turn before returning to Pad three.

The Smuggler stepped into the cargo area just outside of Pad 3. Not a soul in sight. All he had to do was cross the room, slip down the maintenance hatch, gab his mag pads, and prime his jetboots.

A few minutes later Commander Karn and the lieutenant reached the landing pad and his shuttle. "Are we clear on your orders, then?" Levik asked her to confirm as he punched in the code that would open up the ramp. She nodded, "I'm in command until a full delegation of peacekeepers and intelligence agents arrive to ascertain what is missing from the vault." if it had been under better circumstances she would no doubt be elated with this sudden promotion. Levik knew that he had been, having received his rank as commander in a similar way. First interim, then official. "First thing you should do his claim his office," he said with a stern look, "secure any evidence that may be hidden there." Again she nodded, "I'll do that right away."

She initiated the Imperial salute, which Levik answered in a salute of his own before he entered his shuttle and closed the door behind him. The lieutenant, eager to prove herself, didn't linger on the pad and went back inside. That left the pad deserted, safe for the shuttle, and more importantly no onlookers that could see the 'Devil of Denon' attach himself to the shuttle.

It took Levik about a minute to warm up the engines enough and depart from the landing pad. He once again dipped slightly below the line to afford Crix his window to reattach himself and then commenced the same leisurely flight through the mountains as he had on his arrival.

Crow felt his pace pick up as he passed from the cargo bay into the hangar. It took his years of experience to stop him from sprinting the last ten yards, but he managed it. He slipped into the maintenance hanger and pulled it shut behind, locking it as he descended the ladder. He took a deep breath and smiled, fishing the credit purse out of his pocket. He peeked inside and spotted the gems. “Makes more sense than marbles he conceded.

The Enforcer returned the credit purse to his pocket and pulled the mag pads from his hidden stash. Now all he had to do was wait…

Ten minutes later he was safely attached to the bottom of Commander Karn, or The Tarisian’s ship and they were making their getaway. This had been the best executed mission he’d ever run. That made The Exchange far more dangerous than he’d hoped. They were capitalizing on the chaos across the Empire, and doing it very well. He could respect that.

Crow detached from the hull and made his descent. The rest was history. Hopped the speeder bike to his ship and got the fuck off Raxus. Now the only thing he needed to figure out was what he was going to do with his sudden lucrative financial situation.

Three days later, back on Taris, Levik sat at the dinner table of his apartment. In front of him was the target object he had Crix retrieve from the vault: a Book of Shadows. Once belonging to a Nightsister clan, this particular book had been in the Sith Order's possession for generations before it had been confiscated during the expulsion order. Levik was able to read about the clans, their planet and its rich yet dark history. It was the section on Nightsister rituals and magic that he didn't quite managed to grasp. He could read the descriptions and what it was used for, but being able to actually utilise the techniques would require Force sensitivity. Regardless, what this book really represented to Levik was the promise of several fortunes in credits. He would digitalize the contents of the book and sell the practical chapters to whichever Force user had enough credits to buy them. All through the Exchange, ofcourse. The Troig would make sure to claim its cut of every sale.

Crix had proven to be as professional and dependable as advertised.
