I'm doing a research paper comparing the Greek gods to celebrities in modern day tabloids, how similar they are, how we treat them nearly the same, etc. And wondered what celebrities reminded you of certain greek gods. I've got down Tiger Woods as Zeus of course and a couple of others, but would like fresh ideas? Please and thank you. :CHappy:

It seems like a nonsensical comparison, unless you're comparing a certain aspect shared between them. Just comparing two things and pointing out those comparisons isn't a research paper.

It has. There was a book written a few years called something like "Gods behaving badly" where they were living in a bunch of flats in West London and they were like minor celebs or something. That's just one example.

That's not a research paper. You may be able to point out that they're similar, but what's your point? They're similar, so what? If you don't have a point in comparing them it isn't a research paper.

I don't mean to sound like a douche, but that was something engrained in to me by my English teachers. You need a point or else you are going to get a shit mark.

If you can find similarities in the way classical deities were worshipped and modern celebrities are, well done you.

It might be worth you reading that book, or "Celebrity in Antiquity"(another good read, more on the nature of celebrity in ancient times, a definition you'll have to consider to actually juxtapose the modern celeb and ancient deity) if you've got time.

So you're comparing the way the gods were worshipped, and how celebrity worship has adopted a similar fashion.

That's different from comparing certain gods with certain celebrities. Seems to me you'd get farther with the above statement.

You still need a point though. 'The worship is stupid' isn't a point. 'The worship of celebrities is an all-encompassing fashion akin to the worship of classical gods of Greece and a detriment to society' is a point.

Given the limited number of works on this theme, it would probably have some interesting concepts you could use. It's putting the olympian gods in a modern context, even if it's fiction it could still support what you write.

NONONONONONONON! Do NOT do that. You're teacher more than likely uses a plagiarizing program, or makes you submit your paper to a website that does the same thing.

It'll flag this site immediately and you'll be thrown in to a pile of shit you'll be hard-pressed to wade out of.

EDIT: Ok, Doomsday. Stop freaking out. For one thing I thought about this and my teacher knows I use this site, and for another I was just saying that because I felt insulted.

Still, comparing the behaviour and personality of the gods with similar celebrities (Zeus/Woods) isn't the same as comparing the worship of celebrities with the worship of the Gods.

Interesting idea though. You got a title that sets your aim? Because if you're looking at, say a comparison between Zeus and Tiger Woods, you've got the similarity that they are often portrayed in a favourable manner, Zeus often in (very homoerotic) sculpture as a big, hench guy, powerful looking. Lots of Tiger's promos probably have similar ideas. But then again Tiger was pounced upon by everyone for his affairs, whereas Zeus was kind of allowed to get away with coming down from olympus as a swan or a lion and raping any which woman that he felt like, because he was king of the gods. Context is something that'll be important (can you juxtapose modern celebrity and ancient deity given that the people around each were completely different? Attitudes towards typical entertainment, the types of media available, attitudes to sex, all that kind of thing are vastly different between the two).

EDIT: Ols, I got that idea from how Tiger has recently has been caught shagging lots of other women and now his wife wants alot of money, etc. He is someone that alot of people believe to be this wonderful strong and powerful man, which he is powerful because of all his money, but also he has this fault when it comes to women just like Zeus. I love adding a bit of cynical humor to whatever I write.
