Advice. Don't start with a Bassoon! You'll give yourself a brain aneurysm trying to get a correct tone from it. Start with a Saxophone or Clarinet, they are the easiest wind instruments to play.

And for becoming a musician, go to guidance, talk to your teachers, see where they went to study. Oh, and study in Europe, that's practically a must.

If you go into Music Ed, you'll have to learn how to play all of the instruments anyway...lol. Also, to teach at a college level, you're looking at getting at least your masters if not your doctorate. To teach below college level, you can do so with a Bachelors but Masters will get you further. Also, most teachers do perform in other groups: orchestras, ensembles, etc. If you're wanting to perform, you'll have plenty of opportunities still with your music ed. degree.

Yet, it won't be easy. Most of the people I talked to had a really really rough time in Aural Skills and a few other classes.

well for any music education above high school you learn piano its so you can visualize notes and pitches. its actually very helpful. i like the trombone alot because of the easy flat to sharp. i pull in-sharp push out- flat. my favorite instrument. i chose the bassoon because i found it to my liking, and because its also known as a fagot(lol funny)

I plan on studying music as well.

If you want to get in a good school, you need to practice for hours everyday. At least, that's what I do for Piano, wind instruments aren't as competitive however.

I thought about it. I was in the Wind Ensemble for 2 years and took private lessons as I had an Academic Performance Scholarship in Music. However, I chose to go down a different degree path.

I played here and there for a while but let it go. I moved on to an acoustic guitar instead for a while. I'm just now getting to where I'm going to start up with my trumpet again. I had to decide between music and my major (something I said I never wanted to do and never would do). However, they were requiring too much for those who weren't music majors. It was kinda funny though. Everyone in the department thought I was a music major for a while.

I dunno how it works state side, but in England you can take your grades outside of school, meaning you don't even need to take music to make a career out of it.
