As Kyte gently jogged, and bounded over the war torn area, he was surprised at how much was actually intact, and how much wasn't. Everywhere lay cars, lorries, containers, but right next to them would be an utterly burnt out chassis, or a pile of brick that once was a wall or building.

What really got him though, was that weird feeling, that had gotten stronger and stronger since moving away from the group. Well, perhaps everything else had just gotten quieter, but that was neither here nor there.

It felt like he was being watched, and not in the conventional sense. In the sense that he could feel the watchers. Almost see them, in the corners of his eyes, though his H.U.D remained devoid of life. It was worrying, either his scanners were broken, or he was. He wasn't sure which was worse...

The Humans and Demons had all gone off, taking orders from the one called 'Shane'. Padpad looked up to Ckmo and Varha - Elites were the only ones he would be taking orders from - and tilted his head inquisitively.

"Doc got the human female ready for more battle - I'm ready, too. What would you have Padpad do, Leaders?"

He looked over at Edan, he enjoyed the battle but loathed it at the same time. It was a curse in a way, enjoying slaughtering another creature though hating the pain that came from those same creatures towards his fellow comrades.

"I wouldn't call it fun, but it was a battle worth remembering, Sir."

Then his eyes scanned, wondering what that object was he had seen. What it was he had heard, it sounded like moving mush. Looking to his left to take a glimpse at Hattie and Edan he seen it again. Pushing Hattie out of his line of fire he shot 3 rounds into the darkness, the flashes filling the darkened space with light for half seconds at a time.

"What the hell was that....?"

The sound came from behind him, and before he knew it the same sound was comming from his right flank, whatever it was it was fast...

Vincent heard the sound, and his Hud seemed to blip with tiny red pinpricks, flaring up for a second. That meant one thing: Flood.

This was the only time Vincent was gripped by fear. He had heard of the flood, and their disgusting methods of combat: Re-animating corpses to use them as hosts. He called out over the external loudspeaker. ''Show as little skin as possible!!! Cover each other's backs! That's where they'll strike!'' He picked up his shotgun, and policing ammo from a dead ODST beside him. He took the dogtags, and stambed the body, breaking all the arms and legs. He hoped Kyte would come with a vehicle...

Shane heard Wells firing. He then yelled into his helmet, "What the hell are you firing at, soldier?"Just then, he was running towards the firing. He tried to see towards where Doc was firing and turned on his helmet flashlight. He saw nothing. Is Wells just wasting ammo? There's nothing here! He thought.

Kyte heard what Vincent yelled over the comms, and the feeling began to make sense. He'd never seen a flood specimen, though he'd been taught about them, and how to fight them too.

Though, nothing in his training had prepared him for the blind terror that was threatening to consume him. Like an iron fist it gripped his heart, and it was all he could do not to succumb.

All the implants in his body were working overtime, and the neural inhibitor began to kick in, cutting out all the useless emotions.

Soon, he was just as cold as the terror that his body had saved him from.

Scanning the area, he once more found no targets, so proceeded onwards, with caution. Leaping atop a stack of crates, he saw something amazing; a Scorpion MBT. It seemed to be whole as well. He made his way over with all possible haste, only to find the interior of the cockpit ruined. The tank was beyond useless.

But the Mongoose immediately behind was not...

Mounting up, he kicked the engine to life, and revved the engine. It seemed in perfect working order, so he gunned the throttle, and came off the clutch. The small quad powered forwards, skidded around a corner, and dashed back to the others. He wanted to be as far away as possible from that feeling, and being near another Spartan would help.

A lot.

Most ODST's had read the information regarding the flood, many didnt live to put it into action. Edan had read the info several times, the flood frightened him and intriqued him at the same time. This was why he was here, he and his squad was sent to gather some flood DNA so it could be studied. The ODST the Vincent practically dismembered was probably from his squad. A pit of dispair filled his gut when he saw the corpse. "hey Vincent..... what sqaud was that ODST from" he knew it would tell on the dogtags and wanted to be sure if his squad had made it here or not, either way they were proabably dead. He had still had his battle rifle and backed up behind Robert and Hattie, "Keep your guns up" he said as he sweeped back and forth.

"Humans! Fall back. The Flood will be easier to handle if we creat a chokepoint of concentrated fire."

Varha took one of his energy swords in hand and activated it. With his other hand he drew his plasma rifle and waited for the Human's next move.

Ethan was almost scared shitless. He had no real experience on the ground and he trusted the other soldiers to pick up what he lacked. Still, he held his Magnum up firmly and moved slowly back and forth where everyone else seemed to be pointing. This experience was truly humbling.

Shane listened to the Elite give the order to fall back. He saw the Flood running towards them, some of them not fully transformed. He saw some of the infection forms take over the bodies of dead Brutes. Shane fired while running and yelled, "Duncan, RUN! Balder, stick with Duncan. Follow the rest of the group. I'll come in a minute. I'll kill as many as possible! Don't worry about me!" He knew it was a bad idea but had to stick with it. "And Kyte, stick close with the Mongoose. I'm gonna need it for a quick get away." He again yelled. He fired again, shooting the head off of a non-fully transformed Marine. "Damn.........Now I recognise that face.......I just killed a squad member....." He muttered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ensign John Balder listened to his buddy, Shane Lockner, tell him to run. As soon as he told him that, he took off, running full speed behind the group, blind-firing his pistol. While running, he said, "Sir, what if you don't make it out?"He waited for an answer. "Well, then I didn't make it out. I can tell you though, if I get infected, you have full rights to blow me away."Shane said back.

Varha was too busy ordering the Humans around to give Padpad any instructions - not that the Grunt needed any at this point. He had heard the words 'the Flood'. Terror filled him. He had no personal experience with this enemy, and he had heard dark rumours. He thought of his own body as his own, secure and in his control. He could handle the fact that he would one day die, but being infected seemed so much more horrible.

Then again, I heard we Unggoy can't be infected...

He wasn't sure, but it was a comforting thought and it helped him to steel his heart. He hurried after the Humans, falling back into the structures of the base they had discovered.

"Parasite! Very bad thing!!"

He put his Needler on his hip and shouldered his Fuel Rod Cannon, turning to walk backwards. An infected ODST Human leapt out from behind a building, firing an SMG. There was a loud whump, a ball of green plasma shot towards the rotting victim of the Flood, and in a flash the enemy was incinerated.

"Hah! That seems to work."

The butt of her BR-55 pressed hard against her shoulder, Hattie scans the area. "It's probably a bad idea to proceed any further. If there's something small out there, it's not easy to hit first."

A hint of fear shows that the female Helljumper is frightened by the scenario. She heard enough about the Flood to last the rest of her life - even though the ODST has no encounters with the race. Thoughts of her past left forgotten: concentrate on the now, and the future.

Knowing that Hattie couldn't run he gave a self nod of what to do. Taking out one of the Lotus Anti-Tank mines he laid it down and set it for a proximity, armed in 10 seconds. Reaching over he slung her left arm over his shoulders and gripped her side. They would need to fall back, and fast. Lifting her off her injured foot her moved as fast as he could with her. Pulling her in a way towards the light at the end of the tunnel, all the way hearing the awkward noises pulsing behind them.

"Almost there...."

Just as they were about to hit the light he heard the mine go off, even being nearly a 100 meters from the explosion it rattled his bones, almost sending a pain to his bruised ribs. Damn those things could shake the shit out of a person. Soon the true flood would be rushing out of the tunnel, and it would be a death he wasn't prepared for if they werent ready. Looking over at Hattie he gave her a half smile from behind the helmet and released her from his hold, part of him not wanting to, it was good to have some human contact during this damn war. Taking a step away he gave her a slight nod and crouched where he was, shouldering the only real weapon he had, the larger sniper rifle. He wasn't sure what kind of damage it would cause to the flood, though he assured himself it would take them out just like it did anything else.

"Hoorah..."

Edan started back tracking when he saw the decrepit forms lurking in the shadows. He saw Robert kneeling down with a sniper rifle, the vids he saw from Master chiefs hemlet videos showed that would do almost nothing. He ran over and knelt down beside him, putting his hand on his shoulder, " Doc....thats not gonna work.....we need to get the hell out of here. Get whatever other weapon you have and lets blow our way out of this hell hole" He looke up and threw a plasma grenade into the approaching horde, the detonation threw several bodies into different directions but it barely slowed the mass of writhing flesh and metal.

Vincent pulled back with the other marines. He shouted to the Lieutenant. ''Fall back! we don't need pointless heroes today! Do as the Zealot says! The Covenant know the flood better than us!'' He turned to the grieving marine, handing him the dogtags as he moved. ''I'm unsure, soldier. Take them''

As the mongoose Kyte had liberated rocketed back towards the group, a lor of shouting was taking place. Sort of odd, seeing as no flood targets had truly presented themselves yet...

He blasted over a piece of debris, his mongoose flipping mid air, and he barely had time to roll it back over, whilst still airborne using his own body mass. It connected on one wheel, and skidded slightly, before gripping the ground and racing forwards again.

He shot back into where the battle had raged earlier, and past the suicidal lieutenant. In the split second, he made a choice, between leaving the guy behind, and likely to die, or to grab him, and risk both getting killed.

His hand shot out, grabbing the idiot by the jacket collar. The mongoose swerved towards the blockade, and the lieutenant was dumped onto the seats, somewhat inelegantly.

Kyte wrestled the mongoose back onto the right path, before inwardly vowing never to use one again. He roared towards the others, pushing the small quad for every last bit of speed.

He wasn't quite sure where they'd fallen back to, or why he was rushing so much. He had yet to see a single Flood specimen...

It was as he finished that thought, that a flood combat form collided with him, having leapt at the racing vehicle. It plowed into him from the side, knocking him clean off. He would have worried about the bike, but he had more pressing concerns.

The pair skidded for a while, both of them smashing into the ground, kicking up dust and debris. Kyte's arms strained against the monster, as it pressed itself closer, attempting to crush him, with it's ridiculous strength. He finally manged to open a gap between the two, his enhanced body straining with everything it had, and he placed his legs between the pair.

He summoned what strength he had, and smashed his legs outwards, crushing the monster's chest. It fell limp, as the infection form within died, impaled by several rib shards.

Kyte's body wanted to rest, to sleep. That had been no mean feat, and he had probably damaged important muscles doing it, but he had no time. He pushed himself to his feet, and began running towards the marker on his H.U.D that indicated where Vincent was.

He had no idea where the Mongoose had gone, and had no intention wasting time looking for it, considering it had probably crashed, or been driven away by now. So he ran, as fast as he could, without risking further injury.

OOC: Vigrash, the only people who are really exempt from Flood control are the Hunters. True you don't see Jackals or Drones but the Grunts are actually carrier forms. Ever wonder why those big guys had such stubby legs?

Varha waited anxiously for the humans to regroup. He felt helpless not being ablt to atleast fire a few shots into the area were the Flood were but it was much better to get them coned and bunched up. Those things had no knack for tactics.

Ethan just ran blindly in the dierection indicated, not daring to fire his pistol as knowing his luck he'd hit his teammates and he'd just waste his already low ammo supply. When he reached a close proximity to the Elite he had turned around and knealt. Slowly, he raised his pistol waiting for a clear shot and for a Flood form to come in range.

((OOC: That's one theory. But if you compare a pic of a Grunt and a pic of a Carrier Form, the legs actually look quite different. Personally, I think Carrier Forms are just Combat Forms that got too old for fighting.

Fact is that no one knows for sure whether or not Grunts can be infected. But IC-wise, Padpad has only heard rumours - no scientific evidence. He's never even seen the Flood before now. People will hold on to any thought that comforts them when they're as scared as he is. :p))

IC: Padpad was running backwards blindly, firing his Fuel Rod Cannon whenever Flood emerged from their hiding places and charged him. He kept moving, never letting the Flood get around behind him. But he hadn't expected an attack from above.

An infected Human came leaping off the roof. It was unharmed, thankfully, but still dangerous. Padpad was forced to drop his heavy weapon and jump backwards, drawing his Needler. He held the trigger down until the disgusting thing had exploded. He holstered the Needler, stepped up again, bent down to retrieve his Fuel Rod Cannon -

Bullets hailed into him. He turned, following the sound to discover their source, and fired. The green ball of plasma hit the combat form dead-on, and it was destroyed. But he could hear more coming.

Worry and fear clouded his mind, making him forget his training and his discipline. It took all his self-control to stop him from throwing down his weapons and running. But he managed it. As he backed up through a doorway, he looked over his shoulder and scanned over the building he was in. It was a small warehouse, with a ground floor and catwalks above. He had entered through the only way doorway - the other entry had been blocked by a fallen house.

Scrambling up a ladder, he knelt down and aimed his weapon at the door. Then he spoke into the comlink attached to his breathing apparatus.

"Found warehouse. Only one entry, easily defended! We regroup here! Tell me you're coming in before walking through door, my finger's on the trigger and I'm just a lil' bit tense!"

He wasn't used to giving commands, but it wasn't like they had any other option. Desperate times called for desperate measures. And speaking of desperate measures, he could see a few Warthogs amongst all the ceiling fragments and rubble on the floor that still looked like they might be in driving condition.

"There's human vehicles in here! Maybe still working!" he said excitedly.

((I was waiting for Dub... she hasn't said much :-p))

Listening to the heed given to him by his fellow soldier he would have to trust his word on it. Though not believing it as much as most would he still mustered to sling the weapon over his shoudler. Withdrawing the pistol he looked around and gave a subtle nod to Hattie, hoping she was ready to run again. Hell he'd drag her if it called for it, he wouldn't let her turn into one of them, even if it meant slowing him down...

Taking ahold of the woman once again he made sure he would be like a crutch to her and began his sprint towards the old warehouse Padpad had been talking about. The noises had grown louder as he drew closer and closer to the safe haven, at least thats what he prayed it would be. Explosions erupted from every which way, he wasn't sure if they were frag grenades or shredder rounds, but the sounds had to be dulled by the helmets own hud. Then it was his realization that the parasite forms were popping, and that was the sound of small explosions, amazing what heightened senses could do to such a subtle sound. Comming to the doorway he shielded Hattie from the outside exterior of the building before calling out.

"Padpad! Its Doc... were comming in..."

He only hoped the Grunt wasn't as trigger happy as he had known them to be. It wouldn't be the first time he received friendly fire, and he was almost certain it wouldn't be his last. Inching his way in he gave Hattie the first option to take a spot for cover. Slowly backing into the open room something fell in front of him. Looking down it was a large bulbous mass, filled with different faces. Unsure of what exactly the deformed lump in front of him was he glared at it, only for a second, then it hit him...literally.

The explosion might as well have been a Lotus Anti-Tank mine with the sound that it let off. It was the last thing he heard before blacking out, that and the ringing of coarse. Sailing through the air the explosion itself had done virtually nothing but surprised him, that and the sound. Watching himself sail through the air it was as if he were airborne for minutes, though in reality it was less than five seconds. Then came the hard thud against the ground, and the dizziness that swelled over him. Closing his eyes the blackness of his eyelids were the only sight he'd have, drifting off in a heap of his own body.
