Sleheyron 1800 local time.

Sleheyron was an important node in the Hutt Cartel, with its extensive trade in slavery and fuel for starships. Breaking into that kind of monopoly would be much further down the line for an ambitious Hutt businessman. No, first he would start small and work his way up earning hard-earned credits, procuring muscle and in time carving out a little spice empire for himself. Maybe adding in a cantina here or there, and with enough assets behind him, then he could look at expanding into the more lucrative but equally dangerous trades. And from there? well, the sky was the limit.

More importantly, he would need a business partner to get started with. While he could certainly wallop any idiot foolish enough to get within arms reach, Skelgok knew he wasn't winning any foot races any time soon. It made sense to find a human to work with, not only for their athletics, but also he would more easily be able to traverse the more sensitive worlds that a giant Hutt would stand out in.

Skelgok had already been busy, scrounging up the funds to purchase a modest apartment that overlooked a small canyon. It certainly didn't scream wealth nor power, but it would do for an initial base of operations until he was better situated. Lounging on the balcony looking at the glorious view, he waited quietly for his guest to arrive. A droid would answer the door and welcome him inside to join with the Hutt and offer refreshments.

If he couldn't speak Huttese, a protocol droid would imminently translate for Skelgok to ensure they kept up with the conversation.

<Welcome, I am looking for someone to do business with. There will be an endless stream of credits if you are willing to get your hands dirty, but first tell me of your skills and accomplishments and whether you have killed.>

When Crux stepped onto the pristine floor of the apartment from the dusty ground outside, he would wait for the protocol droid to greet him. Having expected him, it didn’t take long. When the droid offered refreshments, he would ask for nothing but a glass of water. He could enjoy himself after the business was finished.

The bounty hunter would follow the droid to the balcony, where he caught sight of the Hutt lounging outside. Skelgok— he’d met him before, and Crux gave him a nod of courtesy. He couldn’t help thinking that the last time he’d seen the Hutt, he’d still had his right arm. Though the Hutt wouldn’t likely know or care because of the armor, it still felt like something was missing as he sat down across from him. Skelgok got started almost right away, and that was something Crux appreciated as he took off his helmet and placed it to the side.

<Getting my hands dirty has never been a problem if credits are what comes off.> Crux answered in Huttese, leaning back slightly in his seat. <My skills are whatever you need ‘em to be. I can slice, I can fight, I can kill. I’ve done all three. You name it, I’ll get it done.>

He took a small drink from his water before looking back at Skelgok. <Was there something particular you needed done?>

The larger Hutt sat there eyeing the bounty hunter, weighing up whether it was worth bringing the man into his employ or not. He certainly came with the right attitude to impress Skelgok, that much was certain. There was little hesitation in his words, although it remained to be seen if that would still be the case when it came time for action.

The Hutt took in his question before looking out over the horizon and slowly waving his out stretched arm to encompass the world. <A whole galaxy out there, ripe for the taking. With your skills and my business talents, we could go far together and push the cartel far beyond what it has ever dreamed of before.>

His tense presence came back to the balcony and face stiffened. <But first, I have heard a terrible rumour that a spice runner has been doing jobs on the side to avoid paying tribute to the bosses above him. What do you think should be done about this?>

Skelgok's eye twitched as he licked the side of his mouth. The nearby droid quickly hoisted a large glass of some kind of alcoholic beverage to his face and finished it off in one large gulp. When Crux had given his answer, he continued. <It is a golden opportunity for an up-and-coming pair of individuals like ourselves. They have a semi-legitimate business transporting between ISC and Hutt space. This allows them to wash the credits they make from running spice back and forth. We'd rather it is our business, you see?>

Skelgok pulled out a data pad with some business information and financials, highlighting himself as the owner of the small enterprise, with Crux being on the board as a security executive. The position would be well paid, with performance bonuses and all the little benefits you could want. In reality, none of that would really matter as long as the spice was run on time. If they were successful here, they would both enjoy an explosion of income and would be able to greatly improve the quality of their lives.

Even better, the funds for expansion into other business ventures would quickly come. If Crux came along for the ride, it was certain to be just as profitable for the bounty hunter as it was for the Hutt.

Crux had to admit, the prospect of seemingly endless credits and the galaxy being theirs for the taking was a tantalizing one. Although he’d have to be sure that it wasn’t all just talk— he’d heard plenty, and Hutts could be deceitful when it came to getting what they wanted. At Skelgok’s question, Crux’s brow would go up slightly.

“There might need to be some… intervention,” he answered, “but we shouldn’t let an opportunity like that go to waste. It sounds like he’s already got a thing going.” Why not use it?

It seemed like he and Skelgok were on the same page here, and it showed when he brought out the datapad. Glancing at the datapad the Hutt held, Crux could see that this job was probably the biggest job ever offered to him. The pay was much more than he’d anticipated, and the prestige was more than he could have ever wished for given his origins. It was more than tempting, but there was one thing he needed to know first.

“That I can get behind.” He gave Skelgok an appreciative nod. “I just have one question.” He would look at the Hutt, waiting for some acknowledgement before he went on. “What do I have to do to earn it? From what I know… Hutts never give things away for free.” Before he fully accepted, he wanted to know what he was in for.

The Hutt smiled as Crux spoke, agreeing with his assessment of the situation. They'd thrown away their opportunity and had in turn given it to the pair willing to take it from them. Sure, there was some work to be done before they could start collecting profits.

One by one the dominoes would fall into place, they would only require one to push the first over.

Skelgok crossed his arms with a smile upon his face as Crux asked the final question. <"I think you already know the answer to that."> It wasn't like the Rodian was going to give up his business willingly or without a fight, but that's what Crux was for.

<"Tomorrow night there will be a delivery at dock 17, you're going to take out the escorts and allow me to renegotiate their contract. If you do well, then we'll move on to the next stage of the plan.">

There was a lot to be done, Crux knew, but he was glad that Skelgok seemed to already have a plan in place that they would go through step by step. Those who planned ahead usually won, and he could already tell that this Hutt knew what he was talking about.

<The escorts won’t be a problem,> Crux assured him. Since their target was operating under the radar, it was likely that he wouldn’t have a large security force with his shipments. If anything, his escorts would probably be a few close friends or co-conspirators— his trusted men. The less people there were to talk about it the better, but evidently someone had slipped.

<Is there anything else I should know before I go take a look around the dock?> he would ask. If not… <By tomorrow night, that contract will be ours.>

A grumbling tummy gave formal notice that it was time for their meeting to end. Skelgok looked at Crux directly as the man offered one last question before the mission.

<I doubt he will be present but the Rodian should be taken alive if he is stupid enough to do business in person. We also want the crew alive, well, at least the important ones. The rest you can do with however you like.>

Next he shared details of the location any all the intelligence that had been gathered. It looked like a crew of four with as many armed guards. If they put on an impressive enough show it was likely the crew would surrender, although one or two might not. Obviously they'd try not to blow up the docks, the goods or ship but otherwise Crux could plan his attack as he liked.

Skelgok would remain from afar until the combat had ended, swooping in to take the spoils and sign the new crew.

Seeing as there were eight men against one with at least half of them armed, a head-on assault was probably not the best idea. Instead, after reviewing the layout of the docks that Skelgok had provided, he decided to go the quieter route.

The landing pad itself was outdoors, resting on the side of one of the many mountains of Sleheyron. However, the rest of the facility was built into the rock, providing a relatively safe and concealed area to store any illicit goods they might be transporting. With crates and racks filling up much of the warehouse, there would be no shortage of cover. Crux would find his atop of a metal grid hanging just above the entrance to the warehouse and right behind the wall with a clear view of the landing pad. He’d asked Skelgok to wait in a room close to where he was that he’d made sure to clear out beforehand. It wasn’t a particularly dignified location for a Hutt, but it would have to make do for now.

Soon, the hum of an engine would indicate the arrival of the shipment. Whether the Rodian was there or not, Crux had his rifle on stun. Orders were not to kill anyone important, after all.

Flat on his stomach, he would wait for the ship to land and for a couple men to exit it before he fired his first shot. It struck the guards on the chest, and he collapsed to his knees as the others around him dropped whatever they were carrying and pulled out their blasters. Shifting his position a little, Crux would fire again at a second crew member. It was then that they spotted him, and the Rodian pointed a finger up in his direction.

“There he is!” When a blaster bolt flew just over his head, Crux knew it was time to get out. Getting back behind the wall, he would slide down the ladder before making his way into the maze of crates. There, he would resort to his backup plan, picking up each man one by one from the cover of the boxes before only the Rodian was left standing.

<There is someone who would like to speak with you.>

There was a certain-twisted evilness to a sneak attack that Skelgok relished when Crux proposed going in the quiet way. While it wasn't the over the top dramatic event that he had hoped to hear, its effectiveness would be quickly felt and at the end of the day that was just as important as flair.

Skelgok clasped his fingers together plottingly, excited to be so close to the action without actually having to take part in it. While he did consider himself to be an excellent shot should the need arise, the pistol on his belt being available, he was something of a difficult target to miss on a good day. Perhaps in the future he might commission a fantastic battle suit that would both defend and allow himself mobility on the battlefield, but that was a while away.

The blaster shots echoed through the thin walls that the bountiful Hutt lurked behind. One by one, the bodies hit the floor until the climatic silence befell the dockyard. A grin from ear to ear perched itself on Skelgok's face, as the hired muscle performed his task exceptionally well. Slithering out from the darkness like a plague, the Hutt beamed with delight as he caught sight of the Rodian on his knees and hands held high.

A brief glimpse of the carnage that lie around the ship proved the man's worth, he mentally noted. <What of the crew?> the question was pointed towards his partner in crime. Their prey shook in fear, caught between wanting to attempt running away and begging for his life. In the end, Skelgok would grant neither.

<You belong to me now, your family, your crew and your entire business. This is not a negotiation. But first you will finish unloading the ship with my business partner here, then you will sign it all to me.>

Skelgok was a fair employer too, Crux could take any and all the loot and a little product for himself should he choose for his efforts. The man had certainly earned his keep, and once they sold the shipment, he'd get his first big pay day too.

With the crew on their knees next to the Rodian and Crux’s blaster leveled at their heads, they didn’t have much of an option but to comply. Whether they would do that in the future or not he wasn’t sure, but that would be up to Skelgok to decide. That was, until the Hutt asked for his input.

That rarely happened, and when it did, Crux still found himself wondering if there was already a correct answer that they had in mind, a feeling he hadn’t been able to shake off since the day he officially left life as a slave. Although the final call was still Skelgok’s, it was nice being able to input his opinion.

<They owe a debt to the Hutts, and debts should be repaid. I think we should let them live, but split them up.> He could see the relief on some of their faces, but others looked unsure about what that would mean. Whatever their expressions were though, Crux didn’t much care. It was up to them whether or not they would take that second chance should they be given it.

The Rodian was apparently wiser than he looked, and at Skelgok’s offer he would hurriedly nod his head.

“You can— you can take it all. Just let me live!” No concern for the men at all. Crux would take a step forward at that so that he was at Skelgok’s side.

“Get on with it, then. Unload the ship.” Just then, the Rodian seemed to realize what he’d just said and his eyes shifted left and right as if trying to find an escape route. Unfortunately for him, he would quickly realize that there was nowhere to run. At that, he would reluctantly get up to his feet motion for his crew to do the same. Then, they would slowly head into the ship and begin to unload the crates, while Crux spoke quietly to Skelgok without taking his eyes off them.

<A suggestion, my lord, if I may.> He would wait for Skelgok’s approval before going on. <To expand the business, I think we could give each of these men their own ships and crew. It might be expensive, but that would mean we have multiple shipments running at once instead of just this one.> That brought up the issue of whether the men could be trusted. In Crux’s experience, if one employer were to give a better offer than the previous, it was usually enough to ensure some degree of loyalty. In this case, where the men were previously subordinates to the Rodian, who likely didn’t give two kriffs about them, they would be getting their own ships to command plus higher pay despite their debts. That was a promotion if Crux had ever heard of one.

However… <This is all your decision, of course.> He would get paid either way, so whether or not Skelgok accepted his suggestion wasn’t a huge deal in the end.

Skelgok watched in admiration as his plan came together quite well if he could say so himself. His new crew went about following orders under threat of horrible things, which would normally only get you so far. That was why Crux's idea was something worth considering, as the Hutt pondered the possibilities.

<"Expensive yes, but each man would be in my debt even more for their newfound success and less likely to be problematic.... at least in the short term which is all that matters. Business would boom and we would profit handsomely, I'm sure we can figure something out.">

This Hutt was no Nor'baal and his youthly ambition and cunning showed. Still, Crux made for an interesting partner, both showing muscle and business acumen. Together they would be a formidable business bloc taking on the criminal underworld and with his cousin's help, no doubt becoming insanely rich in the process.

While Skelgok and Crux were speaking, the treacherous Rodian pulled out a blaster from a hidden compartment in the ship, pointing it between the pair. In his panicked state, he fool-heartedly pulled the trigger without realizing that the battery pack wasn't connected properly causing a misfire.

Drawing his own blaster pistol, Skelgok quickly fired back striking the Rodian in the arm causing him to drop the blaster and attempt to flee. Taking care to aim, the Hutt switched his target to the being's legs, striking one and making him suddenly tumble close by.

<"I am disappointed in you, but take pride in knowing that you will now serve a greater purpose."> Skelgok slithered over and picked the crying Rodian up by the throat, turning to stare down the crew that had stopped working to watch. <"If you work well for me, you will be rewarded. Betray me..."> the Rodian went limp as the Hutt crushed his windpipe between his fingers.

<"Crux, prepare the ship we have a business meeting on Kessel to attend to."> They'd dealt with transportation and now they would meet the suppliers. Of course, it was a perfectly legitimate business operation in ISC space, they wouldn't be able to pull the same kind of shenanigans, but he also hoped a simple board meeting wouldn't do Crux's head in for how boring it probably would be.

Knowing Hutts, they didn’t seem to take advice well most of the time. However, Skelgok seemed to not only hear it, but actually consider it. Today was getting more interesting by the minute.

Of course, the Rodian had to try something in the middle of their conversation. While his men went to work, their former captain would make a rather sorry attempt at his new employers’ lives. Crux’s knee-jerk reaction was to draw his own blaster to shoot back, but the misfire combined with Skelgok’s shot in the arm seemed more than enough to keep the Rodian down. The Hutt did have quick reflexes, especially for someone of his species.

“Di’kut,” Crux muttered, sliding his blaster back into its holster as he heard the crack of the Rodian’s neck. Around them the former crew members seemed to work even faster, and not a single word was spoken among them. He had no doubt that they wouldn’t cause any trouble going forward, at least in the near future.

At Skelgok’s next request, the bounty hunter would give him a nod before heading over to their ship to input the coordinates. He’d never been to Kessel, but had heard plenty about it and its spice. If they could get their hands on some of that, it would definitely be profitable. All they had to do now was get there, and get that contract. But after seeing the Hutt’s methods, he figured that it wouldn’t be difficult.

<Ready to go.>

Skelgok was not the kind of Hutt Crux was used to dealing with, but that wasn't to say that he was always going to listen to the man and take his advice. They were business partners, for now, but with enough wealth and power under his belt going to his head, who knew how that would change him?

The young Hutt made his way inside the ship whilst Crux readied everything. The next meeting would make our break their little organization and it was imperative that everything went well. On the one hand, walking in unannounced could spook the other half of the operation, but then again tipping them off could lead to unwanted complications. Skelgok opted for the former and determined that they'd just have to rely on getting through it in one piece.

The ship shortly afterward took off and entered hyperspace en route to Kessel. The Hutt found Crux and decided to fill in some time while they had little else to do. Each question was put to him and answered before the next was revealed.

<"Tell me Crux, what is it in life that you truly desire if credits were of no hindrance. If you could take anything in the galaxy as your own, what would it be? Do you understand what will happen if you betray me?">

Once they arrived in Kessel, they'd make their way to a small mining outpost. Skelgok would flick a message to their contact and they would meet him in a small diner, out in a back room. Crux would arrive first and check it out and ensure it was not a trap, and then they would both meet the contact to conduct business.

On the way to Kessel, Crux found his mind wandering to a question that had been growing since the moment the Hutt put out the deal: what did Skelgok get out of all this? Before that meeting, he’d thought they had it all. All the money and labor they could want, and even an entire fleet to enforce their will. Yet Skelgok still wanted to be business partners. There had to be something else to it besides just an enforcer— the Hutt could have easily hired someone for that without the fancy position, but he didn’t know what else it could be.

His thought process was cut short when Skelgok asked about what he wanted out of life. That was easy. He’d spent years thinking about it, even though it was so far off. But a Hutt was probably not the best being to open up to about it.

<Probably a cantina of sorts. I’d have as much spice and as many drinks as I wanted,> he answered, swiveling his seat to face Skelgok. <Nothing fancy.> He turned again to face back forward before Skelgok asked another question. This time a little less friendly than the first, but what did he expect from a Hutt?

<If I recall correctly, you once suggested to have my arms ripped off,> he answered dryly, glancing at Skelgok. <You won’t have to worry about cleaning up my limbs, though. I may be a bounty hunter, but I’m a bounty hunter who keeps his word.> He left it at that, hoping it would satisfy the Hutt.

Soon they’d arrived at a small diner on Kessel, and Crux went in first. Everything looked normal and he didn’t get a second glance from anyone, which was usually a good thing in a place like this. When everything looked safe, he would let Skelgok know through comms that he was clear for entry. Once they’d gotten to their seat, they would wait patiently for the contact to arrive. Crux just hoped that this meeting wouldn’t end up becoming a huge mess.

Fortunately the ride in was significantly less eventful than the preceding action that had taken place with the workers. Crux had proven himself to be a useful ally in numerous ways, and even as a pilot. Skelgok would have to keep an eye on the man and make sure that he didn't get too big for his pants and start to think he was the boss around here in their somewhat equal partnership.

Crux's answers were perhaps to be expected, but clearly not ambitious enough to garner any further attention from the Hutt. If the man would be happy with some minor income-producing club then by all means, Skelgok would ensure that he got it. For him, the sky was the literal limit, perhaps one day he might become the most powerful Hutt in the cartel, both in money and firepower. Though for now, he was content to lurk in the shadows of his distant cousin, he wouldn't be a true Hutt if it wasn't playing a long con of some kind.

After they had arrived and Crux had successfully scouted out the place, Skelgok arrived in style. Their guest had arrived in the meantime and was slightly worried about being caught out in the open, either by the strange new faces or by law enforcement. Skelgok played the part of a Hutt well, waving the man off for his concerns and beginning to discuss business.

"Let us discuss business," he said, beginning to discuss business. "It is a simple deal, you have the goods and the means to conceal them and we have transportation and the means to distribute. The same arrangement you had with the Rodian, except this time with me."

The man looked at Skelgok, Crux then back toward the Hutt. "No way, I need a bigger cut or I'm out. That crazy Rodian almost got me caught. The risk is too high, we want more."

Skelgok was intimidating on his own but why do all the hard work himself? Nodding to Crux, the Hutt non-verbally instructed the man to lay out some pressure on the bastard and get their message across clearly. The Kessel crew would deal with them directly, or they wouldn't deal at all.

The problem with so many who dealt with the Hutts was that they wanted more. Granted, Crux would have liked more as well, but he knew better than to ask for it before even making a deal. Clearly this man needed to be taught a lesson.

“My friend,” Crux began, leaning forward to place one elbow on the table, “there is risk in every line of work. You’re right, though. The Rodian was careless.” Then, he took out his blaster for the man to see before placing it on the table. “We aren’t.” It really was beneficial that all the other patrons were studiously avoiding looking at their table, and that this man was inexperienced enough to not bring one of his own. His silent gulp gave it away.

“My advice would be to think over what you just said. It really ain’t a good idea to piss off a Hutt.” He shrugged, glancing at Skelgok before turning back to their guest. “If the cut still isn’t good enough for you, we’d be happy to convince you otherwise.” If the man still didn’t get the message, the man would deserve everything that was coming to him.

The show of force was impressive enough, even Skelgok was pleased. That being said the man despite shaking a little in his chair remained defiant, not willing to budge. "I've heard enough, Crux. Let's send them a message they'll fully understand the first time."

If they couldn't work with the leader of the small operation, they'd work with his second in command. But before they could do that, Skelgok had an idea to fix their results before the next meeting was set. Waiting outside in a landspeeder for his partner in crime, the Hutt glanced over toward him to check that the deed was in fact done. Next, he'd lay out the simple plan, something they'd have to throw together relatively quick and dirty but he suspected would ensure their trip wouldn't be in vain.

"Every criminal organization has weak points Crux, sometimes it's corrupt members, others it could be not paying your boys enough, but sometimes it's family. You see the man in there was an only child with no one else to care for him in his old age, but his Lt? well that man made the mistake of finding someone to love him."

Skelgok wasn't above murdering the lot to ensure his plan went through, although he kept that part to himself in case Crux wasn't as eager. "I did my prep before this mission, I know his wife frequents the market up ahead. We keep this simple, we nab her and use it as collateral to ensure that he folds like a paper bag - we may even get a better deal out of it. What do you say?"

Despite what he’d heard, the man still refused to work with them. That left them no choice but to go to his second-in-command, who they would have more leverage with based on Skelgok’s findings.

The Hutts, despite their luxurious lifestyles, really weren’t careless.

“He had his chance. Might as well take matters into our own hands,” Crux responded, giving Skelgok a nod. “Hopefully we’ll catch her by surprise.”

A short while later, they were in the bustling market, where beings were hustling about trying to get to wherever they needed to be. Like the diner, not many gave them a second look, either out of fear or because they were used to seeing an armed Hutt and bounty hunter walking the streets. Crux suspected that it wasn’t the latter.

“We’ll have to be quick. Won’t be long before word gets out that a Hutt’s here,”
he said to Skelgok, though he figured that he knew that already. “Any idea where she could be in this mess?”

Hutts could be many things, but forgiving was often not one of them. Although this 'backup' was not directly responsible for his predecessor's mistake, he would find himself in receipt of their plotting all the same. Skelgok appreciated that Crux didn't seem to question his methods and was happily going along with the plan. He wouldn't assume the man did it out of loyalty when the hunter was being paid well, but clearly, he'd picked well when it came to partners.

"The information said that she often wears a necklace with a golden dove attachment." Looking around, many women came and went with jewelry of different types and sizes. It wouldn't stand out enough for them to find her quickly but perhaps something else would.

"Her name is Abigail Runestil, perhaps you can ask around and see if anyone has seen her this morning. Perhaps they'll give us something with a little persuasion. Her husband is a tough bastard, but I suspect you'll have to show them you could be worse."

If she hadn't been to the markets yet they'd be able to set an ambush, but if she had visited already then they'd have to hurry to find her before she managed to get back home where she probably would be better protected.

“A necklace with a golden dove.” Crux wouldn’t say it out loud, but with so many beings around, going only off of that was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Combined with the fact that she was a local, they had no chance. However, he could think of someone who did.

“The shopkeeper. He can help us,” he said, glancing at Skelgok. “I’ll pay ‘im a quick visit.” Then, he would head to a nearby fruit and vegetable shop. Since it was the only one around, it was likely that she would stop by sooner or later. He made his way for the Twi’lek, who was conveniently already looking at him with his arms crossed. Before he even said anything, the shopkeeper shook his head.

“We don’t do that kind of business here.”

“Never said you did.” A moment of silence passed before Crux picked up a jogan fruit and turned it in his hand. “How much for this?”

“Four credits.” The bounty hunter nodded. As he went to take out the money, though, he made sure to grab a few extra. He normally wouldn’t part with his credits this easily, but he knew finishing this job would be worth far more than a few jogan fruit.

“If you tell me where Abigail Runestil is, I have more. A necklace with a golden dove ring a bell?”

“I already told you. We don’t do that kind of business.” Crux took out a couple more, and when he still was unwilling to fold, he took a deliberate step aside so that the man would be able to see Skelgok outside. The sight of the Hutt seemed to change his mind, and he sighed.

“She’ll be here in about an hour. She usually is. Just don’t— don’t cause any trouble in my store.”

“You won’t have to worry about that.”
With that, he dropped off the credits and headed back to where Skelgok was. Even if the man were to try to warn her, it would be too late.
