**** the rest of the galaxy, let's just colonize Mars.

Why would you want to colonize the Chiss Faction Leader? That just sounds painful.:bitchez

Seriously though, we have other things to worry about before thinking about colonizing space. It would be easier if the whole world could pool its resources and get us into space, that and world peace would be nice for a change. Automated orbital farms to combat world hunger. Industrial facilities in space, reducing pollution. Reduce overcrowding on the planet, not that big of an issue atm, something that might become one in the distant future however. Discovering Prothean technology, jumping our tech forward hundreds of years. Joining the galatic community and getting ourselves a seat on the council. And then I can date Tali.

Today we have the means and know how to colonize the moon. Want to know whats keeping us back? $$$$ we don't have the funding.

And the NASA budget is also a miniscule portion of the total budget.

@Calist
1. We would waste countless resources to re-supply our colonies and precious materials by traveling back and forth from space.
2. Ok so we do know where they are, but we don't have the equipment to harvest them.
3. When the British colonized America, they were met by Spain and French, who ended up fighting each other.
4. Obviously I am unaware of these technologies, please list some.

1. We would also gain precious resources by going out there.
2. It's likely that we have some technology to harvest resources out there, and any others will surely be developed because it would be incredibly profitable to do so.
3. Eventually they did. However, there were plenty of years not consumed by fighting and international norms have changed since then. That's why we aren't expecting China and the US to be fighting in the near future.

Yay for Mass Effect!

The beginning part of it actually sounds realistic. With our limited resources dwindling, as in oil, and to a lesser extent food, water, and space, it will soon become nessisary to adjust the population to fit the environentn or begin moving people to space. Many people look to mars as our next step for the space program, as it has water, carbon, and geothermic energy. People have already gone into a year of training for possible colonization by testing growing things to work in a self sustainable environment,sealed off from the rest of the world until their time period was up. As said by Robert Zubrin, "So there's the choice in life; One either grows or one decays. Grow or die. I think we should grow." if we stop trying to expand into space, then we leave ourselves to the task of deciding what to do with our ever-growing population. And a whole lot of condoms aren't going to do anything, but cut off a whole generation of people who could provide the answers to the questions we might come up with.

Exactly! If we could just put more funding into this, we'd be out there! Think of it, apartments on the moon :bitchez

Also, expect wars to be fought over various resources in space....

I think there are more important issues than space research right now
