DESCRIPTION
The Starhawk III-class battleship is a heavy capital ship developed by a joint venture between the state-owned Republic Engineering Corporation and Kuat Drive Yards for the New Republic Navy. Developed after the split between the New Republic government and the Free Worlds Alliance, the Starhawk III is intended as a modern replacement for the navy's existing, outdated capital ships, which include a number of designs which date back to the Galactic Civil War and earlier. It is part of a broader defense modernization effort by the New Republic, in response to new threats both foreign and domestic.

The Starhawk III is the latest in a long-running family of capital ships dating back to the last months of the Galactic Civil War. Unlike the Starhawk I and Starhawk II classes, which were cobbled together from scrapped Imperial star destroyers, the Starhawk III is a from-scratch design, produced at state-of-the-art construction facilities operated by Kuat Drive Yards. 2,500 meters in length, it is the longest ship of its family yet built, and incorporates a withering arsenal of turbolasers, ion cannons and torpedoes, designed to go toe-to-toe with warships even larger than itself.

Like all the Starhawks before it, the Starhawk III does have a secret weapon. Mounted in the bow of the ship is an array of 20 heavy tractor beams, monstrously powerful units originally intended for space tug applications, and actually up-rated for military use. These tractor beams are individually capable of capturing and holding an Imperial-class star destroyer with its engines at full thrust, and with 20 on tap, any ship snagged by a Starhawk III is most assuredly going nowhere. Once captured, the snagged vessel can either be disabled by the Starhawk's ion cannons, or picked apart by its array of forward-facing quad turbolaser batteries.

Save a few semi-mothballed battlecruisers and dreadnoughts, the Starhawk is likely the most powerful capital ship in the New Republic's arsenal. Although material shortages due to the New Republic's political separation from the resource-rich Outer Rim have slowed production somewhat, Starhawks are still being built and commissioned at a relatively steady pace.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Starhawk III-class battleships are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons, making them difficult or impossible for civilians and even small factions to own. To date, however, this has been a non-issue, as they are exclusively sold to the New Republic Navy by their manufacturer.

INTENT
To create an update of a ship from canon for our site's fanon, and to give the New Republic a modern capital warship.

RESTRICTIONS
Starhawk III-class battleships are large capital ships with heavy weapons, and capital ships cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They are currently exclusive to the New Republic faction.
