Szai Ryc Vensuri was an Iridonian Force-user during the Force Eternal era. A Padawan of the Jedi Order, she trained to become a Knight at a time of internal conflict and schism. Curious and social by nature, Szai Ryc struggled with the callousness of the times and the hard lines they forced the Jedi to draw. As she advanced to the rank of a Padawan Learner and started facing the uglier and more complicated sides of the Jedi life, her main worry was whether she could fulfil her duties as a Jedi – and not lose the core of who she was in the process.
Biography
No one – least of all Szai Ryc – believed that the sort of nomadic and expansive lifepath of a Jedi was in the cards for her. She was born on the arid planet of Iridonia, the only child of working-class Zabraks, who toiled in the factories in Malidris and in the cockpits of planetary transport craft. If not for her attunement to the Force, Szai Ryc likely would have followed in her parents’ footsteps. Odds were that she would have been fully content leading a more conventional life, too. She had already shown an interest in piloting and ridden with her mother on many of the transport hauls across the planet, when – at age nine – a close call in an air traffic accident revealed her powers.
When her Force powers didn’t recede, and Szai Ryc’s struggles with controlling them increased, her parents decided to reach out to an acquaintance of her mother from her old smuggling days – a Jedi Knight. The Jedi travelled to Iridonia and assessed Szai Ryc’s Force-sensitivity, announcing that she did, in fact, have the potential to become a Jedi. The choice was Szai Ryc’s, and it wasn’t an easy one to make. But her parents convinced her to at least give it a try – knowing full well the opportunities that lay in becoming a Jedi and the relative danger she would be in, should she remain an untrained Force-sensitive outside of a community of Force-users.
So, Szai Ryc left Iridonia and her parents behind. She was first trained as an Initiate at the Starlight Beacon; later, as she neared her Initiate Trials, she moved to the restored temple on Ajan Kloss. She kept in contact with her parents, sending them descriptions and voice notes about her new life. She hoped that, when her eventual Padawan apprenticeship gave her a bit of flexibility and mobility, that she would be able to visit them.
With the Initiate Trials passed, the young Iridonian was hopeful about the times that lay ahead of her. But, with the recent internal schism dividing the adult members of the Order, and the galactic conflict still raging, Szai Ryc was worried about the turns her life might take – and whether she was strong enough to steer herself onto the right path.
Personality
Some humble beginnings create timid and insecure beings. Others necessitate beings who are confident and unafraid to act. For Szai Ryc, it was a bit of both. She was outspoken and fuelled by a healthy curiosity about the Galaxy and the many beings that called it home. Her confidence wasn’t mired by arrogance, but rather a youthful brashness that turned into egotism on occasion – the occasion being activities that she was either very passionate about or very much out of her comfort zone.
Szai Ryc was generally friendly and kind to others, especially her peers, with a large degree of empathy for other beings’ suffering. This, in turn, meant that she was also quite sensitive. She had difficulties dealing with disappointment, especially when the source of her disappointment was other beings that she cared about. Attachments were – and remained – a complicated matter for her.
Appearance
A teenage Iridonian Zabrak with long dark-brown hair, tan skin, traditional Iridonian facial tattoos and small cranial horns. She was small and athletic of stature, wearing Padawan robes, and brandishing a lightsaber with a cerulean blade.
