DESCRIPTION
The TIE/ON starfighter, officially known as the TIE Orbital Negotiator but more commonly referred to as the TIE Early Type, is a variant of the standard TIE/LN starfighter adopted in vast numbers by the Galactic Empire shortly after the end of the Clone Wars. Actually a contemporary of the original TIE, the TIE/ON was an alternative configuration which was demonstrated during the TIE's initial flight trials, but was ultimately rejected in favor of the somewhat more durable TIE/LN.

Though similar in many ways to the TIE/LN, which was still an incredibly light starfighter, the TIE/ON took the "lightness above all else" philosophy of the TIE and took it to its absolute limit. Though it shares the same general configuration, the TIE/ON uses thinner wing spars, lighter alloys in its hull panels, and has a revised placement of its weapons, with the craft's twin laser cannons mounted 1 each in the vertical wing panels. Like the standard TIE, it lacks shields, a hyperdrive or a life support system. Its cargo capacity has also been reduced by 10 kilograms.

Initially, Sienar Fleet Systems intended to sell 2 separate versions of the original TIE to the Republic and later the Empire; the LN and the ON. The LN would have been the ruggedized, frontier model, meant for forward bases and garrisons on remote planets. The ON, meanwhile, would have been the sleeker, more refined model, more acceptable for civilized planets and large naval vessels.

Contrary to rumors, the TIE/ON was not incapable of entering a planetary atmosphere, although its thin wing spars and generally delicate profile did make it more susceptible to flying in adverse weather conditions; no TIE is especially good in atmosphere, of course. The fighter did have a few advantages over the bulkier LN, however; it was faster at 105 MGLT, and slightly more maneuverable. The type was considered a "luxury" model by veteran TIE pilots due to its smooth but willing handling and crisp lines.

In any event, the Galactic Empire decided against procuring two different versions of the basic TIE in order to save time on training and maintenance. With its slightly more durable design, the TIE/LN won out, leaving the TIE/ON without a buyer. Sienar would sell the TIE/ON to interested parties - the Theed Palace Engineering Corps on Naboo actually purchased a full local production license to replace their aging N-1 starfighters - but no truly large-scale military contracts were ever forthcoming. It was quietly discontinued early in the Imperial era.

In the present day, only a scant few TIE/ONs survive outside museums and private collections. They are highly prized by collectors, and are not easy to come by.

LEGALITY
Legal. Though they are technically starfighters, TIE/ONs are considered only light craft under most jurisdictions, and are not restricted in most systems.

INTENT
To bring a vessel from canon into our site's fanon.

RESTRICTIONS
TIE/ON starfighters are rare and highly desirable among collectors. An individual owning one of these would require decent justification.
