Even if Merian didn't seem convinced, she was smiling. Would she believe her? Probably not. The matter was extremely complicated, but maybe there was something they could do. After all, Kalique had worked on ties to the ISB and internally, things were relaxing. From the outside though? Well, the latest media debacle was a mess and stirred everything up again.

Merian then started explaining and it seemed liked after what they had been through today, she opened up completely. She was sharing how the man had surely been someone close to her, but that he had chosen the wrong side. "I'm...sorry to hear". It was a tragic story, yet it led to more questions. It sounded like they weren't in contact anymore, but after they had seen him in the mediation, Kalique surely wondered whether he still dwelled in her thoughts a lot.

Her features softened. She was empathetic and understanding, yet she needed to know what this meant. "If you'd meet him on the battlefield, crimson saber in his hand, what would you do?" Kalique didn't question her loyalty, but she knew sometimes speaking the blunt, hard truth helped. Perhaps it would help her further.

She shifted slightly before she straightened her back, her emerald gaze calmly resting on her as she returned the question. Even if she understood her side, for her, it had always been different. "I haven't...the military wasn't the right place for me. I had found my place when the Order was founded, hence I rather profited from the transition" she truthfully answered, but it didn't meant she didn't understand her view. Many Knights shared her background. She still seemed kind of freed, so Kalique was hoping their little session had helped.

Merian exhaled at the question. What she’d do if she saw him. Like it was hypothetical.

“Die to him,” she scoffed low, for herself. He’d always been the better fighter. Was that treason?

“Don’t be sorry, Knight-Captain. Make no mistake, we were never more than partners. Frequent partners, eventually, both of us Force-sensitive as we were, but partners nonetheless,” she said. “Well, Intelligence work can be lonely. A frequent partner can quickly become the closest you have to a friend if he isn’t too unpleasant. It’s the only reason he ended up on my radar. I swear it.”

Her cheek twitched when Kalique explained her path. Finding her place. Like Commander Baize and his decade of service, last time on the way to Nar Shaddaa for the astronavigator. A part of her couldn’t help but resent them.

Merian rose. Her face was blank again.

“Forgive me, Knight-Captain. You never deserved my bitterness.”

She’d expected a response, but none came. And the more the Knight-Captain stayed silent, the more Merian couldn’t help but feel like she’d said too much, doomed herself.

Not waiting any longer, she bowed and took her leave.
