Anami was pushed out of the cool darkness and into the harsh, blinding sunlight. She stumbled forward and then fell, as controlled as possible, into the dry and dusty dirt. Inside, the little Sephi was cursing the shackles around her ankles and wrists.
The door through which she had been pushed into the giant, deafening arena, closed behind her.
Struggling to her feet, Anami took in the the jeering crowd that filled the stands. She was completely surrounded by the yelling, laughing, and pointing. And she wasn't the only one. Within the large, circular pit stood three other women. Each was just as different and beautiful as herself, each was shackled, and each was dressed in ridiculous outfits that showed off their assets.
One seemed to be a rather scared looking human. She was young, maybe 20, and crying her eyes out. This woman didn't even bother to move from the ground.
Another woman was a Twi'lek. She was on her feet and looking around wildly. Anami had the feeling that this woman had been here before. Whereas the human and herself were completely unprepared.
Then there was the Zabrak woman. She was taller than all of them and she seemed well muscled. Anami tried to not let this bother her. But when the Zabrak's eyes came to rest on Anami's face, Anami shivered. The Zabrak was smiling.
Yes, this Zabrak had definitely been here before.
Then there was a loud voice being amplified above the crowd's. "Welcome, welcome!" It called out in basic before being reiterated in Huttese. "It is another sunny day here in this wasteland and it is a perfect day for another battle to the death!" The crowd cheered.
Anami was supposed to battle to the death?
"We have here four beautiful ladies for your enjoyment!" Anami was sickened. "There are keys in the center of the arena! These keys can get them out of those chains! But they must be careful! The closer to the keys, the closer they are to each other!" Anami's eyes were already searching for these keys. To her disappointment though, the Zabrak was already halfway to the center. "And only one is allowed to leave this arena alive!" Then the human was up and running toward the center as well. She tripped and fell on her way there, crying the whole way. "Weapons have been dispersed at random for their use! Now let's enjoy the show!" The crowd roared its agreement.
Anami's eyes searched for one of these weapons. Nearby she saw a heavy looking axe. Glancing at her opponents, she went for the axe.
The Twi'lek seemed to have the same plan as Anami. The human, meanwhile, had just reached the center. This human was awfully close to the Zabrak who was already freeing herself of the shackles. The human was trying different keys clumsily as the Zabrak slowly approached, chains wrapped tightly in her hands.
Anami was sitting down with her legs out in front of her. She was lifting the axe to bring it down on the chains connecting her ankles. She struck the chains with all the force she had. The vibrations stung her hands and ankles, but the chain was barely affected. Anami lifted the axe again.
On the other side of the arena, the Twi'lek had found a small battery powered saw. She was already applying this saw to her own chains.
The Zabrak woman was slowly choking the human to death. Chains tightly dug into the human's soft neck. Her tears didn't seem to want to stop.
Anami brought the axe down with a new sense of urgency. Her panicked swing almost caused her to chop her own foot off. Focusing, she brought up the axe again. With her next swing, she made progress. The chain was definitely damaged.
The Twi'lek, however, had her feet free and was already working on the chains around her wrists. The human was dead. The Zabrak was looking for a good weapon, unfortunately in Anami's direction.
The crowd was going nuts and Anami heard vulgar statements that she had never thought to comprehend before. She focused on bringing the axe down again. One or two more blows and then Anami's feet would be freed from each other. She glanced up to see the Zabrak going for a weapon that luckily took her away from Anami. The Twi'lek however was edging around the arena now, getting closer to Anami.
Anami brought the axe down on her chains again, worrying about how she would be able to break the chains on her wrists. This method would not work on them. Then suddenly the Twi'lek was running at Anami, power saw spinning violently. Anami felt her heart jump into her throat and she suddenly rolled away to dodge the blades that the Twi'lek swung while running past.
The axe lay abandoned in the dust.
Anami began to crawl back toward the axe, but then the Twi'lek was coming back around.
"Wait!" Anami called out to the Twi'lek, "We don't have to fight!" But Anami could see the fear in the Twi'lek's eyes. She could see that the Twi'lek would not listen. Anami's finger's tightened around the handle of the axe.
And then there was a scream. Blood sprayed. And the Twi'lek fell, a spear in her back. Anami wiped the blood from her face. The Zabrak continued to approach slowly, confidently. Then Anami brought the axe down one last time. Finally, she was free to move her legs.
She got to her feet, not realizing how much she was shaking. Anami was no killer. She was barely a fighter. She had always been a runner. Grabbing the power saw from the dead Twi'lek's hands, she began to back away from the Zabrak. Her heart pounded in her chest and she glanced all around for a way to escape. None could be found.
The crowd cheered the Zabrak on excitedly. Obviously she was a crowd favorite. This was all just a slaughter. There was no way anyone had expected her to live. It was sick and cruel. But for some reason Anami found herself feeling sorry for the Zabrak. This woman had probably been forced into the same fate as Anami. At least this Zabrak had mastered her fate.
The Zabrak continued to approach her slowly. She was weaponless, by choice, Anami was sure. The crowd probably loved it. This Zabrak probably got better scraps of food if she killed Anami with her bare hands.
The small Sephi continued to back away slowly.
And then suddenly the Zabrak was sprinting toward her. Anami swung the saw at the Zabrak. It was awkward since her wrists were still connected. The saw still made contact. Blood was flung away by the spinning blades, but it was just a flesh wond and it barely phased the Zabrak, who was grabbing onto Anami's arms.
Anami aimed a kick at the larger woman. The Zabrak growled in pain but this did not stop her from wrestling the saw out of Anami's hands and throwing it away. Anami kneed the Zabrak again and then the Zabrak struck her across the face so hard pain didn't register so much as dizziness did.
Disoriented, Anami didn't know up from down for a moment. She didn't realize she was being lifted up. She didn't realize the Zabrak's mouth was covering her own. The crowd cheered.
And then Anami kicked her in the stomach. Angrily, the Zabrak threw Anami to the ground and began to kick her mercilessly. The little Sephi tried to crawl away. Dust and blood filled her hot mouth.
