Jun could hear the sounds of combat atop the platform. He couldn’t stop to gaze up and wonder how she doing, he had to focus on his task. Jun sent a telekinetic wave to shove the foremost lines of leech and tendril covered monstrosities back. He had to make it to the next eye. He had to destroy it.

—————

The creature’s offensive push was denied by Vanya’s swift reaction. The creature withdrew its tongues and raised a hand to mirror Vanya’s own. It was unaware of the beam of light hidden within her green flames. Instead, the creature poured forth its own flickering grey fires. The two gouts of fire would clash, slamming into one another for a brief moment and stalemating.

Then the beast’s grey flames began to concede ground.

Its single red eye widened in horror, its voice hurriedly picked up pitch and tone. A mere heartbeat before the beam of light collided with the beast, there was a dull thrum that echoed through the chamber. The sound of a string being plucked broke the silence.

—————

The sudden thrum caught Jun off guard, he’d just plunged his hand into the next eye. But when he heard the noise he glanced up, the platform was gone. He realized that he didn’t feel the wet slime of the eye in his hand, just the cool stone of the wall against his fist.

His eyes glanced back at the shambling people, several of them were collapsed in the ground. They were unconscious but alive. They’d done it.

But where was Vanya?

—————

Time had slowed down to a snails pace. The creature was leaning back, the beam of light just beginning to puncture its chest. Then a young Iridonian woman stepped from its back, her pair of burning red eyes matched the single one of the creature. Her face was stoney, she had accepted her fate but somehow she was able to share a few moments of life still.

This strand of fate was plucked with my final sacrifice, Jed’ai.” She stated calmly. “We cannot kill one another here, so come and bear witness to what I died for.

There was no real hostility in her voice. It was neutral, spoken as a matter of fact. She had died to share this singular moment, to see what this strand of fate had to offer her. This was the way of her Order.

Wordlessly, her gaze would turn upwards towards the trio of moons above them. The leftmost moon had the shape of an eye burned into its surface. The center moon was covered in something, with closer inspection, distant wriggling could be made out on the surface. The final moon had its crust shattered and red crystalline debris was spread out and caught in a gravitational orbit.

Those moons would align, distort, and then the space they rested in would transform. The scene that played out before her was that of death on a galactic scale. But it played in reverse. She would watch as twisted creatures ravaged worlds and monsters consumed populations. In response, naval forces bombarded afflicted worlds, rendering them void of life.

The scene rolled back to a ritual being conducted. Countless beings combined their might make this moment possible. There was a shimmering veil that pressed inward. A sickening splitting sound echoed from the nothingness and all those in attendance were consumed by a black mist. The sound of flesh being torn and bones being broken clashed with the screams of the unsuspecting. When the cloud cleared a being stood in a newly crafted body, it’s eyes opened to reveal a piercing golden gaze.

Further the scene rolled back.

On the other side of the veil, something whispered in the dark. Its voice carried beyond the line that separated the realm of the Force and their galaxy. It called to those who hunted for power, to those that craved dominance, and to those that simply sought destruction. Its voice was sweet, it acted as a lure to the unsuspecting. But in the darkness of it’s prison a pair of massive golden serpentine eyes opened.

The vision ended, the moons returned to the night’s sky. The Iridonian woman lowered her gaze and returned it to Vanya.

You must have questions and we have under that beam of light strikes me down.

Vanya had been in places like this before. Most people went their entire lives without ever truly interacting with the world of the Spirits, but more and more Vanya found her mind crossing over the Veil. She saw how thinly the strands of life bound them here and dove into the minds of others.

In this place, she knew that she was no longer in danger. She also knew that answers were no guarantee.

There may not have been any animosity in the other woman, but Vanya couldn't say the same. The scowls that were etched across her tattooed face were unmistakable, but she held her tongue for now. Maybe it was the words Ezra had said to her or maybe it was the fact that this woman may have been a victim as well. After all, who would willingly subject themselves to this?

Vanya didn't know, but she was willing to remain silent long enough to try to find out.

Why? she asked. It was the shortest question but undoubtedly the most complicated. The motivation behind someone doing this was not simple. She had lost herself in this... miasma of evil. For her own hopes of reward? So that she could worship death itself? Because she'd been deceived?

Of course the other most important question was how to stop it, but Vanya... well, she hoped that perhaps it had been stopped.

And why did you need to sacrifice so many others?

The Iridonian woman gazed impassively at Vanya. She appeared to be no older than her mid-twenties. Vanya’s first question was one that she expected. Why? Those noble warriors of the Matukai had asked similar questions when her hordes of raiders descended upon them. Breaking their fortress monastery and allowing her to operate unnoticed until a survivor managed to reach out for help.

She had brought the Iridonian’s doom. She’d brought the Jed’ai.

To ensure or prevent futures from coming to pass, one must see them all.” She replied. “I am Seer, my duty was to enable the Elders to see this one strand of fate.” She explained. “They will determine whether to prune it or not.

When Vanya asked why all those people had to die, the Iridonian woman scoffed. “Anything worth pursuing requires sacrifices, Jed’ai.” She replied. “What are a few dozen to a few hundred when a vision could preserve a world? A race? Or a sector of space?” She asked in reply. “Their lives weren’t spent so cheaply.

Vanya didn't understand. On some level, she understood the idea of sacrifice and she understood that someday her own life would likely be on the chopping block, but that didn't excuse the execution of innocents. It couldn't excuse it.

Who are the Elders and where can I find them? she asked. She wasn't hopeful for an answer, but she knew time was running out. The singing fires were soon to reach the woman, and when they did, the answers would be gone.

You live in fear of what "might be" and you let it consume you, she said. Help me stop them, she added. She felt weird - perhaps even fake - for saying it, but she imagined it was what she was "supposed" to say. She was likely supposed to offer a chance for "redemption" although she was doubtful such a thing was possible in such final moments. This woman had made her bed, and now she would lie in it. Misguided. She wondered if others would someday look at her the same way: the Jedi who split the Order.

The first sign of emotion broke through the Iridonian, she chuckled. Well, it began as a chuckle at Vanya’s next question but it quickly grew to a morbid laugh. “Come now Jed’ai. Do you expect me to betray those who raised me?” She asked, a mirthless smile etched onto her face. “No, if our roles were reversed, I wouldn’t expect you to answer a similar question.” She shook her head and supressed another bout of laughter.

When Vanya pressed her, pointing out that she lived a life of fear. The woman shook her head. “No, I lived a life with many aspects.” She replied calmly. “I knew love, I knew happiness, but I also knew loss and the need for vengeance.” She explained. “Through their teachings I gained my revenge.” Her red eyes turned to her body, the light was beginning to pierce her chest. She felt the pain and the blistering wound was reflected onto her true form.

Look to the nexuses to find the answers you seek.” She instructed calmly. “But be ready to make a sacrifice of your own, Jed’ai.” She warned.

It was worth the shot, Vanya said with a shrug. They were already trying to kill each other, the worst thing the woman could do was say "no."

The other woman was remorseless, and it made Vanya almost shake with anger. She wanted to lash out and beat the woman into the ground, but there was no point. Death would find her momentarily and she had turned herself into an abomination. The Void awaited her.

She looked at the other woman and as she did, tried to place herself in the woman's shoes. There was a moment's hint of pity within Vanya, but it was quickly snuffed out. She was no victim like Z'anni. She chose her path.

The galaxy won't remember you, she finally said. Simple words that were spoken - truthfully - in pettiness. Vanya only really good have added a "good riddance" to make the point more poignant.

You're a murderer and worse. Begone, she said, and the trance was broken. Death would find her, and Vanya would not mourn. At least... not for that woman.

The Iridonian’s gaze didn’t flinch at Vanya’s words. She didn’t care about the judgements of a Jed’ai, she never had. The reason she had come here was accomplished, the Elders would have witnessed her vision in these last few moments. While Vanya spat her venom the woman turned her gaze back to her mutated form.

She watched as the beam of light burned into her chest exposing bone. Death was mere moments away, she knew that. She took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and prepared herself for nothingness.

In death’s embrace, we are all made equal Jed’ai.

Those were her last words.

The beam punched through her chest, piercing her rotten heart and punching out her back. With her death the realm Vanya had been trapped in collapsed. In a breath Vanya would find herself in the Cathedral’s main worship area but things were different.

Medical beds sat in place of pews. Nurses and doctors worked alongside Jedi healers to tend to wounded civilians or purge corruption from them. It was clear that this makeshift medical center had existed for at least a few days. How much time had passed since she was gone?

—————

Jun was helping the few Matukai that were left purge the infected raiders from the undercrofts when the news reached him. Vanya was back. He had thought she was dead. She’d vanished two days ago along with the platform and all of the eyes on the walls. He wasn’t sure what she’d done, but it had largely purified the cathedral.

Jun and the last four Matukai left their tireless hunt to return and greet the Jedi. Jun did so with a bear hug, the moment he saw Vanya. “Vanishing wasn’t a part of the plan V!” He playfully chided. “Where in the hells did you go?” He asked as he set her down. “Are you alright?

What a waste. It was all that stuck in Vanya's head as she watched the woman melt away and looked out to those who had been caught up here to be killed and transformed.

And then everything seemed to... hiccup. Like blinking she was no longer in that world but instead she was back among a bunch of other people. Like... more than just she and Jun.

She blinked a few times to try to acclimate and glanced around at all the people.

Yeah, I'm fine. I thought I was just in the other world in my mind, but now... I think I went somewhere for real, she said, trying to piece back together what almost felt like a dream.

How long was I gone? What happened? Is everything okay? she suddenly asked a barrage of questions, waving off his concern.

Yeah, yeah, I'm fine. Are you? she asked.

Jun’s gazed down at Vanya while she spoke. His ears were perked, his tails curled around his legs towards her, and the grin on his face spoke of how happy he was to see her alive. While Jun was on his feet, it was clear he hadn’t completely recovered from their attack on the cultists. There were dark circles under his eyes and a tiredness that clearly swam in them.

V.” Jun started. “You’ve been gone for two days.” He explained slowly, there was concern in his voice. “I’ve been scourin’ the undercrofts with the last four Matukai warriors. We’ve been huntin’ for you or info on where you went to from the converted raiders…” He continued. “…a lot had happened since you’ve been gone. I can tell you about it all later but the biggest part is that we saved everyone. You saved everyone.” Jun told her with a genuinely happy smile. “You’re a Force damned hero V!” He exclaimed before he clapped her on the shoulder.

When she asked if he was okay Jun smirked at her and shrugged. “I’m alright, nothin’ a nap or two won’t clear up.” He explained. “But let’s get some grub in you, I’m sure you got a tale to tell!

Vanya's mouth dropped open.

What?! she exclaimed, thinking she had misheard him. But it had only been a couple of minutes. She could still feel the fatigue in her muscles and her mind. She certainly didn't feel like she had rested for two days.

When he told her that they had saved everyone, Vanya was... well, she felt like here head was spinning. She thought of the people she had seen caught up in that blob of evil and... surely they hadn't survived.

But... they were successful.

Vanya let the words sink in and just flopped back in a blob against the pew, letting the exhaustion begin to take hold.

Kriff, I can't believe it, she said. She didn't feel like a "hero" and just calling her that was a misrepresentation, wasn't it?

And Z'anni? she asked.

We saved all those people, she corrected. She wasn't going to let him shirk all the credit. She felt like he was that type: the kind of person that would pretend he didn't do anything, and Vanya was going to have none of that.

Yeah, let's do it, she agreed, pushing herself up to her feet. Her mind turned back to how lucky they got as they walked. It was something to celebrate, but she knew they had gotten lucky. But no, that was the Winged Spirit's guidance, not luck. It was a mercy to the people, but also to Vanya. She knew that her decision would have haunted her and the deaths would have lingered in her mind... but not now.
