A Darth Vader cameo would be perfect at the end, when they're all at the tower where Ezra lives. He feebly knocks on the door and asks if anyone knows the way to "Lando's Space Disco" because he doesn't want to miss Captain EO's performance. Captain EO is the lead singer of an underground band called "The Ragtags" and they travel the galaxy playing local bohemian venues. Darth Vader doesn't care much for EO's musical style but he does see promise in one of the band members, Max Rebo, who he thinks would have a great solo career.

I want the time back for reading this shitty joke.

(Writing this in bits and pieces as I watch the first episode.)

---

So the first ten minutes of this episode were pretty bad.

The dialogue was so trite that I thought literally every single character on screen was at one point going to spout the line ''Who is that kid?''. The animation in both style and execution is also incredibly bland, clunky and almost ugly to look at a lot of the time during the initial daylight scenes on Lothal, but it does get a little better with time. I'm hoping they make a lot of improvements to their animation in coming episodes and seasons because right now it looks worse than The Clone Wars. Everything keeps blending into disparate greys and browns without any vibrancy or grit to the imagery on display. The aesthetic they've chosen makes half the characters look like extras from Reboot, they're too cartoony for lack of a better term, for me to take them seriously, with exception of Hera who I think looks fine, her facial features and her overall aesthetic feel more grounded and believable then the others, who look like Disney rejects.

Some of the ideas, however badly executed in these first ten minutes (literally our introduction to the series), weren't ill conceived though. The idea of a street urchin desperately stealing to survive, and in the process clashing with a band of rebels undertaking a guerrilla operation is a pretty cool idea and it's very Star Wars, but the execution was so incredibly clunky that it just took me out of the story completely. The choice of musical cues also seemed a little...much. I felt like they were pre-maturely chucking their wad a little bit, it didn't feel very natural and felt out of place to just randomly cram in musical cues form the Original Trilogy because they don't really match the initial tone presented by the show. It feels like someone playing the Lord of the Rings score in the middle of a Harry Potter cartoon. I get the intention, but again, the execution felt really rushed and again, clunky.

I thought the space battle looked great though, even if some of the animation inside of the ship felt stilted and awkward the actual execution of the fight felt appropriate, even after the clunky speeder chase from before.

----

Tarkin Town's introduction was cool if also a little too on the nose in terms of referencing the OT (I hope the franchise going forward, including the new trilogy, isn't this ''wink wink nudge nudge'' y'know?), although it threw me off how incredibly trusting they were of Ezra, a kid they literally just met, after he tried to steal from them and shit.

Side note: The Ghost looks cool. The name is weird, but I like the design of the ship.

----

Ezra being drawn to objects through the Force was cool, it actually makes the Force seem mystical once more, if still, a little clunky in execution. I get it, he has a connection to the Force, I get it, he's going to be a Jedi, try and be a little more subtle about this TV show, jeeeez.

----

''We're a family.''

''What happened to your real family?''

Hey, you just ****ing met, what the ****?

Clunky.

----

I liked the Wookie prison transfer meta-textual nod, it's the first time something actually felt clever/vaguely entertaining instead of clunky.

Side note: In retrosepct, Agent Kallus's introduction was a little boring wasn't it?

----

''If all you do is fight for your own life, than your life is worth nothing, strange boy that I literally just met. Now, go save all of my friends.''

----

Too much of the dialogue on this show right now is just characters describing the plot, it's pretty ****ing boring.

----

How did Kanan know when to jump off the ground when Sabine and Chopper were deactivating the gravity generator, it's never clear when they're communicating via commlinks? And why did literally no one fire their weapons while everyone was running at each other before the gravity was ****ed with?

That being said, once the gravity is off, I guess it's kind of a neat little moment.

----

The Jabba the Hutt line was good. Kallus's name and beard are bad.

----

Holocron moment was cool. Glad I didn't hear the words Order Sixty Six, because it's the stupidest name for anything ever.

----

Zeb punching Ezra was great. Kallus thinking the Rebels were there before they were actually there was also great, as was Ezra trying to use their comms against them but failing. It's the little things really.

Also, they finally fire their blasters straight away in this scene.

The paint bomb was actually cool, I didn't expect to like something like that, because Sabine is literally 'fan service' the character, but I did like that moment.

Although, why didn't the Destroyer fire on them as they were trying to escape?

----

Kessel looked great, the Wookie kid looked awful and where there no Imperial Ships in orbit?

That being said, the music at this point actually starts to fit what's happening in the show, which was kind of refreshing tbh because it felt like there was a bit of a clash for the first half of the episode.

Although the execution of the Wookie rescue also felt quite rushed and clunky.

----

Side note: I appreciate the violence of the show, it feels in line with the OT where you actually see people getting hit with blasts and explosions as opposed their being awkward cutaways.

----

Kanan's moment was cool I guess, but it would have been a little more impactful if the show never implied he was a Jedi in the first place, so it was shocking for both the characters in the show and the audience themselves. Missed opportunity tbh. Also, it's weird to me that Kanan is now the first Jedi emerge after the Empire's takeover instead of it being Luke, but whatever.

----

Another side note: I actually like Ezra's dorky little slingshot weapon, but I don't like him suddenly doing Spiderman jumps over stormtroopers out of ****ing nowhere.

Kallus surviving getting shot off a bridge was weird, but I liked him kicking the Stormtrooper off because it's the first thing he's done that actually makes him seem in any way villainous, and comical villainy is even better in some cases.

----

The 'Force scene' between Ezra and Kana was so rushed jesuschristthe****nuggets.

I gotta say, I really don't like what this does to the Star Wars lore, I actually really like the previously established notion within the Star Wars universe that the Jedi were totally destroyed or forced into actual hiding ala Ben and Yoda. It makes their return in the OT through Luke all the more weighty and interesting and it makes the Jedi all the more mysterious, combined with the mysterious nature of the Force itself. Kanan's inclusion just rubs me weird, in weird places, I feel itchy.

----

The 'A New Hope' line was cool I guess. The Inquisitor is bleh.

Not an excuse.

There are plenty of great kids shows that aren't just kid shows, but family shows, stories geared towards people of all ages, almost like Star Wars was.

Go figure.

Remember guys, it is a kids show.

Just because something is a kids show doesn't mean it can't be held to any standards. Look at the Avatar shows or Batman: The Animated Series.

I love Batman: The Animated Series, but let's not pretend it wasn't super on-the-nose, or that the show took any risks, or that its naming schemes for villains was any better. Also, go watch the first episode again, as it's not very good. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing.

Yeah, try harder.

There are hundreds of great animated shows geared towards both kids and all ages that are excellent, you can't win this particular nugget. Being a kids show is not an excuse for being a bad show, simple as, end of.

Everything becomes a debate with you, eh? Some thing to "win". lol

Diff'rent strokes, my friend, that's all. Perhaps I'm just more forgiving than you, but that doesn't make sense because I can only think of a handful of good children's shows, and none of them are still on the air...

You're the one who created the 'debate' mate and attempted to 'win' it when there was no way you possibly could because your original statement was ill conceived.

Pretty simple really.

Alright, that's enough. I have no patience to see a dick-waving contest again. I will delete all future posts that continue this line of discussion.

I do agree that BTAS doesn't hold up as well. Now Justice League. THAT'S a show.

ON TOPIC:

Overall, can't wait for a better episode to come along.

I do think the prospect of the show has potential....but after seeing the second episode I'm less optimistic.

They need to dig themselves out of the muck of fan service, then I'll be more interested.

It's all a little too Star Trek (2009) right now.

I was concerned about R2-D2 and C-3PO being fan service. They still were in a way, but at least they were used as part of the overall mythology of the show.

Something we also need to keep in mind as well - this show is very deliberately designed to be the first point of access for a new generation of Star Wars fans. So what's fan service to us, is in many ways the first introduction for younger kids. I find it helpful for my enjoyment of the show to keep that in perspective.

I get the perspective. I understand the outside elements.

The problem is the fact that those outside elements are effecting the work in negative ways, when they shouldn't be effecting it at all. Especially when those fan service elements feel incredibly shoe horned into the material in obstructive ways.

The sooner they find their footing, the better.

Who is everyone's favorite (or least disliked) character thus far?

I dig Hera the most. imo she has the best design and has so far had the most natural dialogue.
