Anyone else think this game is going to be a colossal failure

We'll bomb them later mate.

From reading articles on IGN about journalists hands on with the game, the basic mechanics: UI Interface, Questing, Groups, Combat are all 100% standard MMO fare, with notable unique twists. The conversations are apparently fantastic.

But even reading about it is just a small ****ing preview. Wait till the reviews and your own hands on experience is all I can say to people.

There are only so many ways to twist an MMORPG, so bolded for emphasis. As long as the bolded bit is appealing, it works.

TOR and WoW are targeted at different age and player demographics.

While bioware aims at a more mature audience with a focus on storyline and cause and effect, blizzard aim themselves at a more widespread but primarily younger audience with simplistic and repetitive gameplay wrapped up in a poorly written and easily understood plot with a heavy focus on action. This is not an isolated incident either - both design companies have always had different focus. Look at Warcraft and Starcraft - fast paced, high action games. Then look at KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights - plot focused, heavy role playing elements to immerse the player in the storyline and make them consider their choices and the repurcussions.

Comparing the two is moronic. Comparing the two before one of the games has even been released and with barely and decent reasoning is outright retarded. Which is why I'm not surprised you're trying to do so, Wing.

I found rail space combat extremely disappointing (I actually enjoyed SWG for the brief time I was able to play it, largely because of its space combat), but I expect the planetside part of the game to be epic.

So you will find me at least trying it out. :)

Every MMO in existence. MMOs are geared toward gameplay and mini side quests. MMOs do not allow for good character stories.

This is so wrong it's really just funny.

Runescape, Guild Wars, EVE Online (in the sense that you create your own story/legacy), Second Life if it can be called an MMO.

TOR is going to be the biggest of all MMOs that have catered to story lovers and gameplay. Why? Because like Blizzard had a following before they made WoW (obviously its following multiplied by the thousands, but it still had a basis), Bioware has a following as they make TOR. They also have every real Star Wars fan's attention.

IMO it'll be WoW for sci-fi and story lovers.

Okay, I've played two of those three games, and only one of them are you right one. Guild Wars does not have a "make your own story" feel. I've played that game for years, and even role playing on it is difficult at times.

Runescape, I will grant, is very good for roleplaying. It really is open world, a bit like DDO (not GW). Runescape I still sometimes think about going back to, as I've made more than one good character on it in the past, and they apparently added on more free stuff.

EVE... it sounds like too much work to be worth even try, unless you're a hardcore space flight fan. I'll stick to X-Wing Alliance, thank ye.

Don't say I bloody well don't what I am talking about. I beat GW and only quit it mid-Eye of the North because I was having more fun making fanfiction with a friend over a messaging system than actually playing the game itself. It was good for its day, but the game itself -needs- to have a sequel so that things improve.

And don't even get me started on the obsession people have with Blizzard... I am immune to them, apparently. TOR will likely have a great story, and thus give reason for people to keep playing. I am not dissing Bioware here -- they know what they are doing. Lucas Arts on the other hand... can't make a good game to save their lives.

I'm a little late to this thread it seems, but here's my two cents.

I saw there was only one mention of SW Galaxies. That game was amazing the day it came out, but then the first few patches changed a lot of the combat. Basically it made the game suck. Also it didn't have a standard leveling when it first came out. Which probably made it less appealing to many people. Today SWG is just dying.
Anyways, no TOR will not take over WoW, but I think there is a sliver of hope it will be a good MMO. Mainly from the BioWare hype.
I have a bleak outlook for TOR's long term success, though. But you never know until it comes out.

Also, MMO's do have potential for great character development. Look at WoW's RP servers. Also with expansions, there is expansion of the story line.
Heck even some major patches add to the story lines.

We've discussed Galaxies to death in other related threads, I played that game from launch and was invited to the beta, every mention of it I see makes my stomach ache.

There is no way the game will be free to play.

Also, are you drunk or something? This is from BioWare and EA Games, Lucas Arts had nothing to do with this.

Off the top of my head, they probably might make some parts of it F2P; although the rest of the game maybe P2P. Like with STO, SW:TOR may have a demo version (or free trial if you will) so people may see how the game works; which I'm hoping for. But, quite frankly, since I happen to love the KOTOR games, I wanna try this game to see if there's a major difference or similarities too it. Last I hear, the Turbine already turned LOTRO and DDO into a F2P. So, the company making SW:TOR might do that too.

I have doubts that the game would have free-to-play elements, given the popularity of Star Wars and BioWare. This would only logically happen if the game does not meet expected subscription sales.

DDO went F2P due to it dying and Turbine took a risk to see if it'll save, which it did. LOTRO was simply Turbine acting to boost sales from that game, based on the success of DDO.

Okay. Well, I do hope the game will come with a free trial at least, before I waste money on the subscription first or at least provide screenshots or videos so people can see how it works; besides reading the game manuals.

MMO's don't come with free trials at start-up usually, unless they're special 'friend' keys for people who have bought the game and want their friends to try ala STO.

And even then the friend keys don't always work so well, depending on how many people there are vs server strength. AoC comes to mind as a prime example.

I'm sure there will be plenty of gameplay videos showing how the game works out. I've never seen a multiplayer online game that didn't have such footage.

I've just skimmed this thread, but Constantine and Green Ranger make some good points.

It's hard to say whether or not TOR will top WoW, but one day WoW will be succeeded. One thing's for certain - it won't always be the biggest and best MMO. Someday, another MMO is going to come along and draw in a devoted amount of players that outnumber those of WoW. World of Warcraft is so old now, and it's been dying for awhile. Whether it will be The Old Republic that outdoes WoW or not though is up in the air. Either way, Star Wars has a huge fan following and many of those fans are gamers, and that, coupled with Bioware taking on the task of creating this MMO, will certainly guarantee that this will be successful. I don't think it's a question of whether or not TOR will be a success. I think it's more a question of will it top WoW.
