"Alright kids, let's go over some ground rules before we begin." A middle-aged Twi'lek man strode out in front of the group of Jedi with his hands clasped together behind his back. He waited for everyone to quiet down before he continued. "Keep your googles on during the game. Do not aim above the chest. Blind firing is not allowed. Moving barriers is not allowed. Shooting outside the designated areas is not allowed." He paused to take a breath and to let his words settle into their scattered little brains before he continued. "If you are eliminated, raise your paintball gun above your head and slowly make your way to the nearest exit. You are considered eliminated if you take more than one paint hit."

He continued to drone on for a little bit, then cleared his throat. "But, mostly importantly-" The man grinned cheek to cheek. "Have fun! Now, let's get you all divided into two teams. Maura, you're the birthday girl, so you'll be the red team captain. Who wants to be the blue team captain?"

---

Originally, Maura hadn't been sure whether or not she still felt up to the paintball game she'd planned for her birthday all those months ago. Recent events had kind of dampened her mood, but in the end, the event had already been paid for and she was glad she hadn't canceled. She'd never been paintballing, this was going to be so fun! Plus, she had to celebrate her sweet sixteen. And what better way to do that than to shoot her friends and maybe friends-to-be with little balls of colorful paint?

While she waited for the other captain to be decided, she plopped down on the ground and began to assemble the protective gear. Goggles, knee pads, and a vest. Her hair was tied back into a fluffy ponytail and stuffed under her favorite blue baseball cap. There was still a still bandage across her healing nose, but the girl was otherwise recovered from recent events.

Jedi social for Maura's 16th birthday! She has invited every padawan she knows and there is an open invitation for those she doesn't. While this is a padawan-focused social, feel free to join with your knights+ as a chaperone :))

Open to Jedi, closed to anyone else.

'Paintball?'

Jedi Knight Hera Albion had no time for such foolishness when she was a Padawan. Her days were consumed with training with her blades, studying how to construct droids, or practicing her piloting. In fact, she could not recall a single day in which she hadn't spent training with her lightsabers as a young woman. This almost single-minded devotion created the Arkanian that could be seen today, standing off to the side of the field.

'A birthday party?'

Hera never celebrated her birthday, the occasion would come and go with no fan fair. The stoic knight never had a friend visit, bring cake, or whatever else accompanied these ridiculous celebrations. In fact, thinking back, she could never remember a single birthday of her own. It was no more than a mark on the calendar, a day to increase the number of her age when she filled out forms.

'Was that, healthy?'

Hera never did anything with her peers in her childhood. Hera never even had a childhood friend. Hera never ate cake or played games in celebration. Young Hera never did anything but train. She felt well-rounded, and she felt as though she was a good Jedi, but did she truly have a happy life? Who could be considered a friend to Jedi Knight, Hera Albion? Who would remember her birthday and care to celebrate it? Who cared if Hera lived or died?

'Nobody should grow up like that.'

So, when Hera was asked if she wanted to attend a Padawan's birthday, to chaperone and watch the younglings have fun, she immediately jumped at the chance. Perhaps her childhood had been so quietly disappointing, but in this new generation, she could vicariously live it again through them. Standing off on the sidelines, Hera grinned from ear to ear as Maura was appointed a 'team captain.'

"Woo! Go Maura!" Hera shouted with joyful abandon.

Their lives would be filled with sadness and work, but children deserved to enjoy themselves for at least a little while. The ability to look back and remember their youth with happiness was a treasure not everyone could say they had. A paintball game, a small celebration, and a gathering of friends and peers. In these times so dark, these little joys would be worth more than gold.

Ciri stood not too far from where Maura was getting ready, already dressed up in her protective gear. Master Lurch had not been very happy after she had vanished during the Pantora field trip and had made it very clear to her that she needed to socialize. So, here she as, to "celebrate" another Jedi birthday and participate.

As she was handed the gun, this one loaded with bright pink colored pellets for some reason, she listened to the rules as they were being explained. "What happens if you're eliminated?" She asked the Bothan standing besides her, who seemed high on too much sugar and barely able to keep his hands from shaking. "You're out." Ciri paused, surprised it would be that simple. "For the rest of the night?" He shrugged noncommittally, but that was enough for her as she immediately pointed her gun at her boots and shot twice. The Bothan jumped away immediately, letting out a profanity that the brooding figure of Master Lurch standing nearby did not approve off.

Something else he did not approve off was Ciri raising her hand into the air and beginning to walk towards the exit, as he intercepted her on the way. "Hold it right there padawan. Let me incentivize this in a way that makes sense to you. Win the game, and no group training for a month." That got her attention, and she stopped. It was a tempting offer, and that was all the encouragement he needed as he spun her around, a simple wave of his arm wiping away the paint splatter from her boots. "This one volunteers as Captain."

Ciri, captivated by hie offer, resigned herself to an evening of "socializing" and lowered her hand and walked up to the center where the organizer was trying to get them split into teams. Coming to a top before Maura, she gave her a nod, a birthday greeting and acknowledgement of her being a obstacle in her path all rolled into one tiny gesture.

"May the worst shot lose."

Birthdays were a thing that Rath was aware of, and perhaps it was celebrated by his parents a long time ago. But as Rath had grown older the gifts were nothing more than souvenirs. So the concept of a birthday party wasn’t strange to him, but Rath was unsure how to… mingle? With the Padawans or anyone else in a group. Granted, Rath himself was a Padawan as well, and his interaction with other people during the Jedi Academy days were limited as it was. More so that he didn’t stay in there for very long before he was sent out as a Padawan.

So when he received an invitation to a Padawan’s birthday party, Rath was unsure and honestly thought it was meant for Master Albion. But when it was confirmed to have been addressed to him. Well, since Master Albion was attending as a chaperone then it would be rude to ignore the invitation now wouldn’t it?

At the party, there was a paintball game taking place, and instructions were given on what to do and what not to do. Simple really, watch where they’re shooting at and don’t hit the face. Plus the call shots too, but that was all well and good right? Well, so far there were two teams. Red versus blue, and both already have their captains which was fine. Rath was no captain anyways, and most of the time young people rush off on their own. Or they’ll do the opposite and bunch up which can be easy targets if someone got the drop on them.

But that was where Rath realized that he was once again viewing it like some kind of mission and not a game for fun. So there he was, garbed in the protective gear, but now it was the question of which side he should join. Frankly, Rath knew neither of the captains, so either one would be fine in his opinion. One option was to wait on whoever would want to claim him as their team member, but where was the fun in that?

Rath would walk over to the rainbow hair birthday girl as he simply spoke in a stoic tone. ”Mind if I join your team?”

Dash felt pretty chilled. He was competitive yes, but paintball was paintball and a birthday party was well, just that. He'd do his best, which might be quite good, he wasn't going to worry too much about it. It was nice to be doing something fun for once.

Maura seemed to be fun personified, with rainbow hair and her cool pointy ears. She reminded Dash of more than one of his friends back on Rhinnal - those off the wall types that tested every rule. He mouthed a 'hey' to the birthday girl (@lizziie ) and nodded to Rath, having met the guy before on Kashyyyk.

He stood off to one side, listening closely to the rules and doing some stretches in his gear. His outfit was close fitting and super stretchy - hopefully he'd be able to dodge just about anything in it. Usually, he could count on his small frame, but the other Jedi were even shorter than him today, which was a novelty.

Dash sidled up to the young girl who looked like she really didn't want to be there (@Wit ). "Looks like it's me and you missy. You better not be the worst shot". He smiled at her, already feeling like they'd do just fine. Besides, blue was his favourite colour.

He heard a familiar voice and snapped around to see his master Hera watching from the sidelines (@Black Noise . Watching and cheering the wrong team. He shot her a pained smile and silently prayed he wasn't about the make a fool of himself in front of her.

Ruzaan was a little later than he'd have liked, having had difficulty wrapping his gift for Maura; a rainbow of spray paint bottles that would no doubt be used for mischievous purposes by the birthday girl.

"Happy birthday, Maura!" he said, slightly winded as he arrived at the gathering, presenting Maura with her gift. He'd given up trying to wrap it prettily so it was a mess of wrapping paper and tape, but at least the gifts contents were, for the moment, a secret. So long as Maura didn't unwrap it right then and there, the Knights nearby would be none the wiser as to how Maura had obtained the paints.

Ruzaan grabbed a pair of goggles, searching the area for his friend Samara but not seeing her (@llamallove). He'd messaged the Chalactan on a whim to see if she was available for paintball but hadn't heard back... perhaps because he'd forgotten his datapad back in his new room in his haste to get to the event.

At the moment, the teams appeared even at two players apiece, and while Ruzaan didn't know the two players on his team very well (@Wit @Alhon), the prospect of being opposite Maura and Samara meant that it would be a very entertaining game no matter what. The Togruta motioned towards the azure coloring his montrals. "Team blue for me!"

Samara was the last to arrive, but for once in her life, she actually had a legitimate reason. Last minute birthday gift shopping for a Padawan that she'd seen around class and passed in the dormitories but had never really spoken to apart from a rather bizarre Switter exchange. It was difficult, picking out a gift for someone you really didn't know.

Unimaginative as it might have been, the Chalactan decided to purchase a case each of the new Emryc Energy Life Day flavors. Just what every teenage party needed, right? Energy drinks! Samara strode in with two cases slung under her arms, the third suspended behind her. She spotted the refreshments table and deposited her load, joining the rest of the group mid-lecture.

While the middle-aged Twi'lek explained the rules of the game, Samara's gaze fell on Ruzaan. She didn't dare say anything aloud, not while the Twi'lek's facial expression spelled resolution, so she settled for a wave and a mouthed, Hello, As soon as there was a lull, Samara joined Red Team. Maura, the girl of the hour, and a black-haired Padawan she did not recognize. "Need one more?" she asked, addressing them both. "I'm Samara, by the way." @lizziie @SlagathorTheUnknown @AsenMahawa

Maura looked up and grinned at @Hera Albion when the knight called her name, giving the woman an enthusiastic thumbs up in the process. She continued to slip her gear on, which didn't take too long, and she was already rising back to her feet when @Rath Nihro approached her, asking to be on her team.

"Yeah, rrrr- Rath, right?" She was pretty sure that was him name, and she would look for any indication of that being so on his face before she waved her hand at the Twi'lek ref and shouted, "Okay! He's on my team!"

Large, black eyes soon met @Cirilla Shan's as the goth girl wandered over and acknowledged the padawan with a voice even more stoic than Rath's. Maura cocked her head to one side, then grinned cheek to cheek. "And may the best shot win!" She decided there that she liked Cirilla, for reasons unknown and almost arbitrary.

Next to arrive was @Ruzaan Kai the kni- nope, still a padwan. Maura gave yet another enthusiastic wave and looked genuinely surprised when he handed her his messily-wrapped present. "Aw, thank you!" She really hadn't expected anyone to bring her a present. This was not the girl's first birthday party, but her 'parties' of past were much less event like this and more along the lines of her hanging out with one or two friends in her room and eating cake. This was much better, and she felt very touched he'd decided to get her a present. Presents had no place in the arena though, so she set it off to the side and took on a mischievous grin when he joined the other team.

Last to arrive was @Samara Draven, goth girl number two at the gathering. Maura had never met her before, though she did follow her on Switter. "Yeah! I think that makes the teams even," she answered with a nod. As if on cue, the Twi'lek old man spoke up.

"Alright! Everyone - make sure you have your gear on and your guns with you. We're heading into the arena." With that, he opened the gate and held it open for the two teams to file inside. Maura led the charge as first through the door, and once everyone was in, the Twi'lek shut it and stood in front of the group again. "Alright, here's how things go: "

- Last team standing wins the round.

Attacking
- In your post, you can attempt to shoot one person you can see, or two people at disadvantage.
- When shooting, roll a d100 in the dice rolls channel on the Discord to hit. Write this at the end of your post and who you're shooting at.
- If you attempt to shoot two people, roll two d100s for each person and take the lower of the values.

Defending
- If you are being shot at by one person, roll a d100. If you roll above their roll to hit you, the shot misses you (either by you dodging, diving, or it just missing). If you roll below their roll, the shot hits you.
- If you are being shot at by more than one person, roll a d100 at disadvantage and take the lower roll.

Letters are for our reference but are marked on the obstacles as well. Blue team starts on blue side, red starts on red, but players can move anywhere on the map.
goqq8WZ.png

"Alright! You have thirty seconds to get into position starting..." He raised his hand into the air, and let the tension build between the group. As soon as Maura looked like she was able to topple over from her frozen about-to-take-off stance, he chopped his hand down in front of him. "NOW!"

With only a few minutes to spare before the game kicked off, Samara arrived with cans of Emryc Energy. Ruzaan had never understood the almost cultish following the President of the ISC had, but there wasn't any time to tease Samara about her choice of energy drinks- it was time for some lighthearted trash talk.

The Togruta nudged Samara gently with his elbow as they filed into the arena together. "You picked the wrong team" he said, failing to keep a straight face and smiling despite himself; it was difficult not to smile around the Chalactan. "So I hope you don't mind your hair looking like Maura's by the time this is over" he teased her (@llamallove).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the signal was given, Ruzaan glanced across the dividing line. His mission with Maura had taught him that the girl was nothing if not quick to act, and this time was no different; another smile broke out across Ruzaan's face as Maura shot off at breakneck speed to get into position (@lizziie).
Hefting his paintball gun- an uncivilized weapon, but one that promised a fun time- Ruzaan crouched low and made his way to cover behind position H. It was little more than a few sandbags stacked atop each other, so it wasn't as high as the other walls around the playing space, but it did provide a decent field of fire.
Stifling a giggle of excitement, Ruzaan waited for the countdown to finish.
The Togruta was a decent addition to their team. He looked a little wiry, but then that probably meant he could move fast and that was the most important thing today. Dash greeted him (@SlagathorTheUnknown ) and hefted his paint gun as they headed into the arena.
They assembled in front of Maura for her into. The rainbow girl was oozing with excitement and it was infections. Dash found himself smiling as he swept his fringe aside and put on his sleek visor to protect his eyes and mouth. In the unlikely event he got hit, he wasn't walking around for the next few days with a black eye or bruised lip. The other Jedi would talk.
The countdown klaxon sounded and they hurried to take up position. "I'll focus on Rath" he whispered to his teammates, before taking cover behind a big cube of cargo crates. He would love to get a clear shot on the guy and ruin that perfectly combed hair (@AsenMahawa ). As soon as the game began, he'd try and get him in his crosshairs.
One person filled in the Red Team’s spot which balanced out the two teams. Three versus three, Rath liked the odds. The dark haired teenager would nod in response to Maura’s confirmation, and without missing a beat she announced that Rath was on her team. The one who introduced herself as Samara followed shortly after, but again neither one of them Rath was familiar with. Perhaps the only face around here that Rath did recognize would happen to be Dash from their previous encounter on Kashyyyk.
Rath puts on his visor to protect his eyes from the splattering paint as the twi’lek begins counting down. ”I’ll cover the middle. If we can coordinate our efforts and don’t let them blindside us, we should be fine.” Rath gave a little advice to the pair, but then again he was not a Captain either so in the end it was Maura’s call. If nothing else, when the twi’lek reached the end of the countdown, Rath would take cover at position N where he would have a clear sight on positions C, D, and G. Partially on position A and F, but there were other obstacles in the way. By the same token, He was at least protected from the other half of the ring with their own obstacles.
Now it was just a matter of when the game could start and who Rath would end up shooting at first. But only time would tell as well as who would position themselves where. Little did he know that Rath already had a target on his back, or head in this case.
"I wouldn't mind," the Chalactan replied with a wide grin, crossing her arms. Dyed strands of violet already blended with her natural raven tresses. What difference would a few more shades make? So long as they were temporary and would wash out in two to three days, of course.
As soon as the Twi'lek gave the group of restless teenagers their cue to go, they went. Samara didn't bother to check and see which direction her teammates (@lizziie @AsenMahawa ) went or where they decided to take cover, even though she probably should have. One too many sips of Emryc Energy on the way here had her head buzzing. She usually didn't drink energy drinks, and these had a peculiar effect.
Instead of opting for the denser cover—sheet metal walls and wooden crates that would've concealed her entire body, she crouched behind a steel drum. It was smaller but closer to the "enemy line," so she could get a better view of her opponents. The down side? They could get a better view of her, too.
Violet eyes peered over the rim of the drum and blinked a few times, scanning for any signs of movement. They settled on a pile of sandbags, where the tips of two blue montrals protruded (@SlagathorTheUnknown ). The Chalactan pressed the stock of the paint ball gun into her right shoulder and rested the forestock on the steel drum. Between training with the Chalactan Adepts and the Jedi Order, she'd never held a blaster a day in her life. Good thing it was loaded with paint and not live ammunition. Samara squeezed the trigger and fired the first shot of the game.
Ciri's response to Maura was a confused nod, was that not what she had just said? The difference in tone was lost to the tiny padawan, as simple a reflection of their differing opinions as it was. She was joined by two more padwans, a human looking boy and a Togruta, the first of whom asked if she was a good shot. "I am an adequately skilled shot, I will pull my weight." She replied frankly, though not going as far as to share her scores from the last practice session she had on Yavin.
As the game started, Ciri ran for one of the drum like pieces of cover (she runs straight for the d) and prepared to shoot. She noticed the other girl, sensing a kinship with her in the way she was dressed and something about her general demeanor. That kinship also made Ciri realize that she was also likley looking for a quick exit from the game, so she decided to help her out. Taking aim, she fired off a shot at the girl even as she was firing at Ruz.
Unfortunately it wasn't the best of shots she had ever taken, and were she someone more....someone less her, she might have felt a little guilty about what she had said to Maura and Dash earlier, but instead she just prepared to fire again, or react to anyone firing at her.
The man started his countdown, so Maura quickly made her way to one of the obstacles. She wanted to take a shot at Ruzaan, but from her position behind the crates (i), she couldn't quite see him.
"Got it!" was her response to @Rath Nihro, right before the referee finished counting down. She readied her weapon, and as soon as she heard shots fired, she peaked her colorful head out from behind the wood and took shots at the first person she saw (@Wit).
"The enemy goth girl!" If Cirilla got out, it proved Maura's team had the superior goth girl. Regardless of whether that hit though, Maura would crouch over from the left to the right side of the (i) crates. "Let's focus Ruzaan!" she whisper-shouted, a giggle under her breath. Of course she had to go for Ruzaan first. It was basically a requirement.
BLUE TEAM
"Be careful what you wish for, Caf girl!" Ruzaan said, still grinning. Bantering with Samara was one of the things he enjoyed most about their friendship, even if the Chalactan tended to get the upper hand more often than not. Besides, he was looking forward to this because the two of them were regular sparring partners; a paintball fight was simply another entry in their good-natured rivalry.
"Want to change up the usual stakes?" he called out to Samara, ducking back behind his piece of cover as a shot from the Chalactan sailed over his head (Defense roll: 19/100). Usually the loser bought the other caf after their sparring session, but a birthday paintball fight called for a more unique idea. Ruzaan didn't really have something in mind, but perhaps Samara did.
Although he hadn't heard Maura's whisper, Ruzaan would still be looking in the colorful Padawan's direction; he'd been on a mission with her before and figured that she'd be the most likely to try something first. A spray of blue paintballs were sent in Maura's direction when the opportunity presented itself (attack roll: 93/100).
The calm of the party intro vanished as soon as the klaxon sounded, as both teams rushed to take up position and the first shots were fired. Chaos began to reign.
Dash smiled in spite of himself, he'd never minded a bit of chaos. He glanced left and right - realising he was at position C - and edged along to his left and the inner edge of the crate cube he was hiding behind. He risked a glance around the edge, looking for Rath in particular and eventually spotted him bobbing behind cover over at position N.
It was a long shot - quite literally - but Dash had a diagonal line of sight. He readied himself, leaned out, took aim and fired, hoping by some miracle to land an early hit for the blue team.
Ciri was still angry with her blaster for her earlier shot, who else could she blame for it? So when Maura fired at her she was distracted enough to not react in time, the pellet exploding against her arm and she immediately stood up as if to leave. But someone standing outside the ring started jumping up and down, waving at her, probably one of the organizers. He seemed to be telling her that she wasn't out of the game just yet, not entirely. Or at least that's what she thought he was trying to sign to her, so she flopped back down on the ground behind the d, waiting for whenever her paintball gun would come back to life. For now she pulled out a book from inside a pocket, a tiny thing she carried around for times like these, and began reading. It was an interesting story, about a depressed droid and a question with 42 doors.
Caf girl. That was a nickname she wasn't going to be able to shake anytime soon. "Nah," the Chalactan called back before she got into position, adding, "You're just afraid that I'll beat you. Again." That last bit she couldn't help but add. Of the two of them, Ruzaan was the superior Padawan, with more field experience and more training under his belt, but Samara liked to think she was catching up to him. Slowly but surely. @SlagathorTheUnknown
Samara had never held a blaster a day in her life, and it showed. The shower of paint balls intended for Ruzaan missed the Togruta by at least six feet, and instead of striking any participants, yellow globs of paint sailed toward a woman standing on the sidelines. A spectator with long, crimson hair. Worse than that—a Jedi Knight (@Black Noise ). Visibly cringing, Samara sunk behind the steel drum, hoping that in all of the chaos the woman wouldn't know who'd fired at her. Just what she needed—to get on the wrong side of a Jedi Knight.
Two paint balls struck the steel drum, inches above the Chalactan's head. Someone was shooting at her from behind. Violet eyes looked up and watched the paint slide down in dark, inky streaks. Hey! Who got the black paint? Now she was a little jealous. @Wit
"Yesss!" Maura's hand closed into a fist a pumped down as Cirillia (@Wit) was splattered with crimson paint. She turned to point at Samara (@llamallove) and grinned, "Goth down! That makes you the superior go-"
She'd been on the move as she spoke, as she'd turned away as she finished her sentence. Her gun was steadied against her shoulder and ready to fire out at the Togruta when a series of impacts exploded against the chest. Something wet splattered onto her cheek, and when she went to wipe it off, blue paint stained the back of her hand.
"Damnit," she grumbled. The ref was already waving for her to walk out, so the girl sighed and slowly made her way out of the netted area. "Wait, where's the other goth girl? I got her!" Once outside, she immediately peered in through the net and spotted the cheater... reading?
"Lame." Oh well. If she was out, she could at least cheer her team on.
"GO RED!"
"Sorry, Maura!" Ruzaan called out, simultaneously impressed that he'd hit his target with such accuracy and also a little sheepish that it had come at the expense of his friend. Ever since their mission together he'd developed a new respect for Maura, but he wasn't about to let that- or the fact that it was her birthday- get in the way of victory and the ultimate prize of bragging rights. (@lizziie)
Speaking of bragging rights, there was someone still on the field who would never let him hear the end of it if she managed to beat him. Samara was correct in that regard- their friendly rivalry from their morning sparring sessions had definitely spilled over into the paintball pitch- but with the two players remaining on each team, the game was still very much up in the air. "I was actually going to suggest upping the stakes" he called out to Samara, unable to keep the smile out of his voice- this paintball idea was fun! "How about the loser tries a new food of the winner's choice?" Ruzaan loved trying new foods (and having two stomachs came in handy for that!), while there were a few things from his homeworld he'd been wanting to show to Samara. (@llamallove)
It probably wasn't fair that he was also drawing a bead on the Chalactan as he talked with her, but she knew the rules as well as he did; the Togruta pressed the trigger again, wondering how the other combatants were doing. (Attack roll on Samara: 80/100 thanks @LilyNion)
