EPISODE 8
BURNING DAYLIGHT

In a galaxy torn by strife, Jedi Knight PERUN embarks on an auspicious odyssey! Within hallowed halls of the Kamparas Training Center, a convivial assembly of luminaries and warriors awaits PERUN's inaugural foray into camaraderie and sagacious discourse!

Perun stood on the bustling docking bay of the Jedi Training Center on Kamparas. The facility located on a verdant planet, with its lush forests and sparkling lakes, was hosting a grand social event for Jedi from all corners of the galaxy. It was Perun's first time attending such an illustrious gathering, and anticipation bubbled beneath his stoic exterior.

As he disembarked from his trusty starship, the vibrant cacophony of the docking bay greeted him. The clamor of various starship engines melded with the cacophonic symphony of hundreds of languages spoken by Jedi and visitors alike. The air, heavy with the scents of exotic cuisine and the metallic tang of machinery, tantalized his olfactory senses.

Perun, clad in his Jedi robes, adjusted the hilt of his lightsaber, its familiar weight a reassuring presence at his side. Beneath his seemingly unflappable demeanor, a whirlwind of emotions roiled; he felt both exhilarated and anxious about the forthcoming event. It was not often that he found himself in such convivial surroundings, and he couldn't help but wonder how his penchant for witty repartee would be received among the other Jedi.

Nevertheless, Perun strode confidently towards the grand entrance of the Jedi Training Center, a towering edifice crafted from intricately carved stone. The cool touch of the stone walls, adorned with millennia of Jedi history, sent a shiver down his spine as he contemplated the legacy of those who had walked these hallowed halls before him. He felt a profound connection to the Force, a gentle thrum that seemed to vibrate through the very stones beneath his feet.

As he entered the main hall, Perun's eyes widened in awe at the opulent scene that unfolded before him. The vaulted ceiling soared overhead, festooned with elaborate banners depicting the noble Jedi Order's emblem. A myriad of crystal chandeliers cast a warm, inviting glow over the throng of Jedi and their guests, their faces illuminated by the flickering light.

The atmosphere within the hall was electrifying, a palpable sense of camaraderie pervading the air as laughter and friendly conversation echoed off the ancient walls. Perun, ever attuned to the subtleties of his environment, couldn't help but be swept up in the convivial spirit of the gathering.

Though he was usually comfortable exchanging quips and jests with his fellow Jedi, Perun found himself momentarily disarmed by the sheer number of new faces in the room. However, he steeled himself, determined to make the most of this rare opportunity for socializing and networking. With a wry grin and an arched brow, he approached the nearest group of Jedi, his eloquent tongue at the ready to engage in the verbal sparring he so adored.

//OPEN to all Jedi and allies who might have a good reason to be there! Have fun folks! I reserve the right to spice things up if the thread becomes stale.

A grand, ostentatious social event. It certainly wasn't the type of setting that Gwydion flourished in, which begged the question as to why he was even attending at all. When he had first heard of the event he wasn't particularly interested at all, but he softened on the idea the more he thought about it. Since the death of his mentor, Gwydion found himself leading a rather solitary existence. The truth of the matter was that Gwydion didn't really have anybody he was close with. It was a problem, and like all problems that Gwydion faced, his first thought was to think of how his teacher would approach the situation.

"Be outgoing! And for hundredth time, smile!" The words of Quel Varess bellowed in his memory. Gwydion took some time to take in the scenery before he entered the main hall where the gathering was taking place. It was quite beautiful. Dressed in simple Jedi robes, Gwydion entered, determined that he would overcome his own shyness.

After several rounds of awkward mingling and exchanging pleasantries, Gwydion found himself in his usual haunt, a quiet corner away from the bigger groups of people, kicking himself for his lack of social grace. It was around that time that another Jedi caught Gwydion's eye, a Ma'alkerrite ape-man who wandered through into the hall appearing to possess the confidence of ten of his species. Gwydion marveled at the apparent ease of the ape-man as he approached the closest group to engage in conversation.

With his curiosity piqued by Perun's demeanor, Gwydion slowly edged away from his corner of solitude and towards the same group that Perun had approached, hoping to eavesdrop on the conversation and perhaps pick up a social tip or two.

"Ittkk taal Vetwo!" A rather disgruntled Rodian dressed in a regal set of white robes exclaimed, as Eluum hurriedly shuffled past him with a goofy grin. "Thousand apologies Master Druga! Its the shoulders ya know!." With a point Eluum gestures towards his Durasteel plated pads while continuing to stride forward without a care. As he then turns away from the Master Jedi, his stride is brought to an abrupt stop as he potentially collided into a rather tall, human male, Jedi. Glancing up Eluum scratched his head, his icy gray gaze meeting the brilliant blue hues of his fellow Jedi. " So Sorry! I'm really not one with the Force today if you catch my drift," he said, a coy smirk surfacing.

The smirk quickly faded, and Eluum's features morphed into a wide eyed visage as he began to stare more intently at the Jedi. "Hey, you were at the memorial ceremony right? I lost some good friends to the attack on Ithor..." His voice trailed off and his gaze soon followed, a pensive moment quickly passed and his gaze returned to focus. "My mother always said I had terrible manners! Name's Eluum! I'm one of the newer Knights in the order, but I'm no spring chicken. Who did you train with?"

Perun, basking in the warmth of the lively conversation, couldn't help but detect a subtle shift in the atmosphere nearby. His keen senses picked up on the presence of another Jedi, (@Baryon), who seemed to be cautiously making his way towards their group. The young Jedi's demeanor betrayed a palpable sense of trepidation, a stark contrast to Perun's own confidence.

Intrigued by Gwydion's reticence, Perun felt a twinge of empathy for the young man, as he too had once grappled with the uncertainty of navigating social situations. He knew all too well the sensations that accompanied such discomfort: the tightening of one's chest, the prickling of perspiration on one's brow, and the fervent desire to retreat into the safety of solitude.

With a slight nod to the group, Perun excused himself and gracefully sidled over to Gwydion, his stride purposeful yet unhurried. He noted the simple Jedi robes that adorned Gwydion's lithe frame, the unassuming fabric a testament to the young man's humility. As he drew closer, Perun was struck by the intensity of Gwydion's brilliant blue eyes, a captivating hue that seemed to belie the depth of the emotions concealed within.

"Ah, greetings, fellow Jedi," the Ma'alkerite said, his voice rich and sonorous. "I couldn't help but notice your approach. Perun's the name." He flashed a sly grin, hoping to alleviate some of Gwydion's unease with his playful tone.

As Perun awaited Gwydion's response, he turned his attention briefly to another Jedi who had just narrowly avoided a collision with Gwydion. Eluum (@Ethanstarks), a newly minted Knight with a penchant for calamity, offered an apology and introduction. The brief exchange between Gwydion and Eluum was tinged with a poignant melancholy as the subject of the Ithor memorial ceremony arose. Perun felt a somber weight descend upon his heart, as he too had lost dear friends in the attack.

With a graceful pivot, Perun repositioned himself to include both Gwydion and Eluum in the conversation. "It seems we all have our share of losses," he mused, his voice tempered with a newfound gravity. "But tonight, let us come together to remember those who have fallen and to forge new bonds that will strengthen us in our time of need."

His eyes, now gleaming with an unwavering resolve, met those of his fellow Jedi. "So, Gwydion," he continued, his voice mellifluous, "what brings you to this illustrious gathering? And Eluum, how has your journey been since joining our esteemed ranks?"

Knight-Bot was both pleased and miffed that he had been invited to this social event. On the one hand, he was delighted that he had earned enough of a place in the Order to be considered worthy enough to invite in the first place. After all, the most valiant of Knights and the wisest of Masters would be here and Knight-Bot was seen as a useful enough droid to be in their presence? It was a high honor indeed.

What was not a high honor, however, was the role that the robot was to take during the party. Obviously, an even of this size had a few different games and activities partygoers could take part in. The usual party fare was found in the halls; Pin the Tail on The Bantha, dunk tanks, slime racing, etc. They were the kinds of games that could be found in just about any party in the galaxy. However, Knight-Bot was himself manning a "Test Your Saber Skills" booth that he was a part of. Most of the participants were Padawans or young Knights (the more experienced Jedi tended to not feel the need to prove themselves in that way) and, so, they mainly faced off against the (in Knight-Bot's opinion) the far weaker and less technical saber training droids the Order had. Bored out of his mind, Knight-Bot stood at the ready in his booth, desperate for a Jedi to come along and request a duel with a droid that could give them a real challenge.

This would be a very important day for an aspiring Jedi such as the Chiss standing in front of her mirror that evening. She was a neophyte to the Order in many regards. Ingratiating herself with a new people was a challenge unlike any she'd faced before. Her entire life had been spent until very recently being groomed and trained to become a valuable member to the Expansionary Defense Fleet. It hadn't even been a year since her life had changed entirely that this event was taking place.

Steady hands went to work adjusting reflected attire in the mirror. Hair pulled back into a simple tight bun at the back of her head. She considered putting in contacts to change her eyes' natural red and pupil-less appearance then thought better of it. She didn't want to set a precedent of deception over something so simple. Nor did she want to commit to wearing them for every interaction she had moving forward. Her face would have to do the heavy lifting today to look approachable.

Glancing down at her dress she couldn't help but huff. Had she known with more forewarning of the event she could've found something more appropriate for the occasion. As is she had to scramble to whatever shop she could to find something fittingly formal. She longed to have her ceremonial military uniform again, but it had been confiscated along with much else when she was cast out. No matter. New life. New opportunities.

Entering the grand hall was a treat, getting to see firsthand the structures and decorations in place. At times it was easy to forget how storied the Jedi history was when focused on the minutiae of daily activities. Training, learning, exploring. In a place like this it served as a chance to see the bigger picture and one's place in such a large tapestry. She scanned the room and took stock of those in attendance and the offerings present such as food, drink, and activities.

The Saber Skills game in particular drew her attention and led to her staring in that direction for a beat. She had yet to contrust her own version of the weapon. It was a source of great envy, and impatience, for the new Padawan. Today there were more important things to focus on however, so she let if fall to the back of her mind.

She could appreciate the camaraderie on display and its colorful cast of characters. In particular a white furred humanoid stood out especially as a species she'd never seen before. But as nice a crowd as it was, it wasn't her reason for attending. She would stand in place, looking for those that held an air of prominence about them. She was here to rub elbows with the elite, to further her Jedi career. There would be no time for games or small talk.

For the first time since his transfer to Brighthome, Mazlen was off-station and on-planet. And not just any planet - no, Kamparas was, by all accounts, a planet steeped in the culture and history of the Jedi Order. So, naturally - as with any place that held any cultural significance - there was a conference. Mazlen's first conference.

How exciting!... is what he thought, although that thought had changed to 'how will I be exiting this place?' quicker than he could pass out his first champagne glass to the guests. That was still his consideration as, presently, he weaved in and out between the guests milling about the main hall of the Jedi Training Center, offering them something to drink from the trey he was doing his best not to bump into anyone with as he carried it. He had been asked to shed his dark blue robes for the night, wearing just his teal-coloured overtunic over his white undertunic and his loose-fitting dark-brown trousers so as to stand out from the robe-wearing guests. Mazlen didn't mind. He appreciated not having to deal with the loose fabric of his robes right then. The young Jedi narrowed his eyes at the serving droids that moved about the room with ease, as if avoiding stray elbows and random flying limbs wasn't like running a bloody gauntlet.

He caught the desperate gaze of one of the other few Padawans who had also been tasked with, well, being poor imitations of a role played much better and more convincingly by the serving droids. Synchronically, as if they were each the other's reflection, the two Padawans shrugged, sighed, and continued their task.

Mazlen had been stoked to leave Brighthome behind for a while. Sure, the temple station did its best to be a temple more than a station, but no amount of artificial gravity or holographic shrubbery could beat the sensation of real terrestrial ground under one's feet or the sounds of genuine nature in one's ears. Sometimes, you just needed the real deal. So, when Master Zase - one of Mazlen's instructors at Brighthome - had offered to take Mazlen and a few of his fellow Padawans with her to a distant planet for extracurriculars, the young Padawan had jumped at the chance.

Now that he knew what the instructor had meant by 'extracurriculars', he might have decided against it. He might have handwaved it off as 'just another Padawan thing', if not for the fact that other Padawans were present and not waitering. He suspected some sort of disciplinary motive behind his being here, doing this, which did not at all jive with his exemplary record. Okay, so maybe he'd been caught lifting nerf jerky from the temple kitchens, but who hadn't? Well, Pria and Kaulkis, who were also waitering, they definitely had. And while Mazlen wasn't entirely sure, he seemed to recall that one of the other Padawans on-duty had been implicated in the recent 'clogged fresher incident' in their dorms, playing 'Force-lift forklift' with those bland-tasting ration packs as cargo and the fresher bowl as the loading zone. Master Zase hadn't been too impressed by that one...

Once his trey was empty, Mazlen saw an opportunity for a bit of fun - how often do you get to leave Brighthome, after all? Amongst the plethora of gaming booths sprinkled about the hall, he'd spotted a booth with a "Test Your Saber Skills" sign on it, manned by a rather fearsome-looking droid. He queued up and waited, looking about every once in a while to ensure that Master Zase hadn't spotted him. Once it was his turn, he would grin at the droid and haughtily announced: "I'm here to beat the record."

When Perun approached him, Gwydion did his best impression of a man in deep thought and not that of a lonely one trying to meet new people. He suspected that Perun saw right through him but if he did he did not show it, which Gwydion appreciated. He couldn't help but to smile back at Perun's grin, he found the tone of his voice soothing. "Perun. A pleasure, I'm Gwydion." It was only a moment after he replied that he was caught off-guard by another Jedi almost bumping into him.

"Don't worry, just an accident." Gwydion was quick to say with a smile, doing his best impression of his former gregarious master. The mention of the memorial ceremony shocked Gwydion out of his social anxiety but left him frozen on the spot. He stared at Eluum, his eyes widened and looking slightly bewildered.

"Who did you train with?" The question brought back the remembrance of a specific memory. The last time him and Quel Varess spoke. Gwydion was cold and distant, he had left the conversation as soon as he could. He had no way of knowing it was the last time they would see each other. Gwydion wasn't sure he could answer the question put to him but thankfully he didn't have to. Perun acknowledged the somber moment and tactifully changed the subject which allowed Gwydion a moment to collect himself.

"To be truthful, I haven't been getting out much socially recently and I thought this was a good opportunity." Gwydion answered before turning his attention to Eluum to await his answer.

Perun's ears pricked up at the sound of boisterous laughter emanating from the game booths scattered around the hall, momentarily distracting him from his conversation with Gwydion and Eluum. He glanced over at the "Test Your Saber Skills" booth, where a droid stood at the ready, poised to engage in a friendly duel with any willing participant.

In the midst of the throng, Perun noticed a young Padawan named Mazlen, who had clearly abandoned his serving duties in favor of seeking a bit of fun. Mazlen's eyes sparkled with mischief as he eagerly awaited his turn to spar with the droid.

As Mazlen confidently declared his intention to "beat the record," Perun chuckled, admiring the brazen audacity that the Padawan displayed. The Ma'alkerrite Jedi Knight felt a tingling sensation of anticipation ripple across his fur, as the electric atmosphere of the event began to infuse his very being. He couldn't deny that he was keen to see how Mazlen would fare against the droid, and perhaps even pick up a few new tricks himself.

However, Perun knew he couldn't allow himself to be completely drawn away from Gwydion and Eluum. He turned back to them, his eyes shimmering with amusement as he gestured towards the bustling booth. "It seems our fellow Jedi have found a way to unwind and enjoy themselves in the midst of our solemn gathering," he mused, his voice lilting with a hint of playfulness. "Do either of you care to partake in the festivities, or perhaps share your own unique talents?"

As Perun awaited Gwydion and Eluum's responses, he couldn't help but reflect on the unique amalgamation of personalities and experiences that had converged upon this gathering. In the midst of such a diverse array of individuals, Perun found himself marveling at the strength and unity that bound the Jedi Order together. Despite their differences, each Jedi was connected by a singular purpose and a shared commitment to the ideals they held dear.

Perun, with his innate sensitivity, could sense the disquiet emanating from Gwydion as he responded to his question. The mention of the memorial ceremony had clearly struck a chord within the Jedi, causing an undercurrent of hidden emotions to ripple across his countenance. The Ma'alkerrite Jedi Knight felt a pang of empathy for his companion, his keen perception enabling him to glimpse the sorrow that lay beneath Gwydion's amiable demeanor.

At the question of whom Gwydion trained with, Perun watched as a fleeting shadow passed over his face. It was a delicate and painful subject, one that Perun could relate to all too well. The loss of a mentor was akin to losing a part of oneself, a gaping void that could never truly be filled.

While Perun was a master of banter and loved to jest, he also understood when the situation called for a more subdued approach. He offered Gwydion a sympathetic smile, his eyes softening in a show of silent support. "I understand, Gwydion," he replied, his voice soothing and gentle. "In times of seclusion, it's easy to forget how cathartic socializing can be."

Perun's gaze wandered back to the vibrant spectacle of the party, the merry laughter and excited chattering of his fellow Jedi providing a stark contrast to the somber moment he shared with Gwydion. "And who knows?" he continued, a playful glint returning to his eyes. "Perhaps you'll find more than just a good opportunity tonight. You might even find a new sparring partner at that Saber Skills booth."

"TAUNT: You will try." Knight-Bot coldly replied to Mazlen as he activated his lightsaber and performed a fairly basic overhand swing towards the Padawan's head, mainly designed to test his opponent and see which style and techniques he favored. Of course, his saber and Mazlen's had been pre-set to the lowest settings so that they'd only produce a mild stinging sensation when they connected.

Thankfully, talk of the memorial had seemed to pass and Gwydion felt more at ease as a result. It was not good for a Jedi to dwell on such things. At least that was what he told himself. If Quel had heard him say that, Gwydion was sure he'd be feeling the Nautolan's hand slap him up the side of his head...

"You're still doing it," A voice whispered inside Gwydion's mind. After internally cursing himself, Gwydion made an attempt to bring his attention back to the present and followed Perun's gaze over to the Jedi Padawan lining up at the booth. Despite not being as skilled with a lightsaber as some of the more combat-focused Knights, even Gwydion was intrigued after hearing Mazlen's bold proclamation that he was going to break the record.

"You're right," Gwydion said to Perun, "We can't let the Padawans have all the fun. After all, we're still young ourselves." He wasn't sure of where his sudden expression of esprit de corps came from, but it was more than likely the influence of the Ma'alkerrite Jedi Knight accompanying him.

There was something about Perun that Gwydion liked, but he couldn't quite define the exact quality. The ape-man, despite his obvious tenderness and sensitivity, possessed a devilish look in his eye. It was a look that suggested to Gwydion that Perun was unpredictable and prone to the unexpected. Given recent events, it may have been just the right influence that Gwydion needed. "Shall we go watch the fight then?"

Mazlen knew not what to expect from the massive droid manning the saber booth. As with organic species, there was no one way for a droid to behave - in spite of what some programmers and technicians claimed. They had personalities. Mannerisms. Quirks. Some were chatty, some were stoic. And some had just the right attitude that flared Mazlen's haughtiness even further. He appreciated that. He'd never liked being appeased.

Straight to the chase, Mazlen thought, snatching one of the training sabers laid out on the booth's table. A sheen of iridescent blue dowsed his face as he ignited it. He readied himself for the duel, widening his feet and adopting the Form I-stance. He had been a member of the Order for just a couple of years and had only recently graduated to the rank of a Padawan, but the droid didn't have to know that. Besides, Mazlen was a fast learner. And, surely, the bot would be keeping its difficulty level low... right?

The droid made the first move. It swung an overhead attack which Mazlen anticipated, lifting his saber up to parry as he shifted his weight sideways, so as to make the swing skip away to the opposite side when the sabers collided. If he succeeded without immediate reprisal from the droid, then he would put a bit of space between them, thinking: Well, that was easy enough. Rather than instantly reciprocating, Mazlen would then try to circle the droid, waiting to see if the droid would keep pressing the fight or wait for him to make a move.

"The best way to succeed is to try succeeding, right?" he said loudly, his voice slightly croaky. He side-eyed the onlookers that observed the duel, realizing only then that some had decided to stop and watch.

"A resounding affirmation, Gwydion," the Ma'alkerrite Jedi chuckled, allowing his companion's burgeoning enthusiasm to inspire a similar camaraderie within his own spirit. "Let's saunter over to that gladiatorial spectacle."

As they approached the Saber Skills booth, Perun's golden eyes widened with a combination of amusement and curiosity. He watched as the young Padawan, audacious in his youth, squared off against the massive Knight-Bot. The sight reminded him of his own early days at the Jedi academy, a time when his zeal often outpaced his experience. He could almost taste the nostalgia, bittersweet and tinged with the crisp clarity of hindsight, and it warmed his heart in a way he hadn't felt in some time.

The luminous glow of Mazlen's lightsaber cast an iridescent sheen across the gathering crowd, illuminating a myriad of fascinated faces. The air seemed to hum with anticipation, the scent of excitement mingling with the ever-present aroma of the feast spread out nearby. In the background, the melodic chatter of the party-goers and the lyrical strains of the soft music playing somewhere distant provided a fitting accompaniment to the unfolding spectacle.

Perun watched with a critical eye as Mazlen adopted the Shii-Cho stance, the first form taught to young Jedi. He silently commended the Padawan's technique as he parried the droid's overhand swing, his movements fluid and confident. There was something innately exhilarating about witnessing the raw potential of a burgeoning Jedi, a tantalizing glimpse into a future filled with untold possibilities.

"Ah, the brashness of youth," the Ma'alkerrite murmured, a wistful smile tugging at his lips. He turned to Gwydion, the devilish glint in his eyes returning in full force. "Remember when we were that audacious, Gwydion? Our confidence as boundless as the stars themselves, every duel a stepping stone on the path to greatness."

He chuckled, the sound resonating with the warm familiarity of shared experiences. He found himself watching Gwydion more closely, a sudden curiosity gnawing at him. There was an enigmatic quality about the Jedi that intrigued Perun, a deep well of untapped potential that seemed to shimmer just beneath the surface. He found himself wondering what it would be like to spar with Gwydion, to test their skills against one another in a friendly bout of sabers.

Turning his attention back to the duel, Perun watched as Mazlen began to circle the droid, his youthful determination apparent in every step. He was keen to see how the young Padawan would fare, his own interest in the event growing with each passing moment.

"Well then," the Ma'alkerrite said, crossing his arms over his chest, "Let's see what this youngling can do. After all, it's not every day we get to witness the birth of a potential lightsaber prodigy." He winked at Gwydion, the hint of a challenge gleaming in his eyes. "Think you could take him on, should he best the Knight-Bot?"

"TAUNT: I have been designed to provide Knights and Masters with a worthy training partner. You have no business stepping into this arena." Knight-Bot taunted, though not maliciously. The Sith and the enemies of the Jedi were known for trying to unbalance their opponents with words during fights and it was better a young Jedi experience such taunts for the first time here, rather than in a real duel.

Knight-Bot saw the Padawan break away and put more space between he and the robot. That was good and Knight-Bot adjusted his expectations to account for Mazlen's surprising speed. He circled for a moment before charging the Padawan, feinting another overhead swing before extending his other hand forward and sending a burst of electricity towards him from his shocker hand.

It was a feature incorprated into Knight-Bot that was designed to emulate Sith lightning and Padawans were typically caught off guard with its use. Because it drew its power from Knight-Bot's own power core, he had to limit its usage. As such, Mazlen would only receive a three second burst of it, which was certainly long enough to incapacitate.

Gwydion watched Mazlen intently, his eyes slightly wider than they usually were. The young Jedi brought back the melancholy that he thought had passed. There wasn't that many years between the two at all, but Gwydion certainly felt older. He suspected that Mazlen possessed a spark, a brightness, that had departed him in the past few months, if not years. Lost in his thoughts, Gwydion attention was snapped back into focus by the sound of Mazlen's and Knight-Bot's colliding lightsabers.

"Yes, I remember," He answered softly. Despite his recent somberness, Gwydion had always been the type of person that chafed under the authority of other people and in that sense, he understood what Perun meant and felt a particular kinship with the brash and eager Mazlen.

Lightsaber combat had always been a spectacle which Gwydion had enjoyed. His own mentors teachings had always put emphasis on the peaceful ways of the Jedi and as such, Gwydion had a lot of experienced with defensive forms but had to rely on the spars of his fellow Jedi if he wanted to really see a show.

"I imagine he'd give me a run for me money," Gwydion said to Perun with a smile across his face. He placed his hand down to his side and lightly grasped the lightsaber hilt which was attached to the belt of his robes, "I never was much use with this thing.". Turning his attention back to the spar, Gwydion watched Knight-Bot throw out his other hand after the feint attack and his eyes widened in anticipation as he caught a glimpse of the brilliant spark of electricity.
