For those of you who are in college or are going to college soon, how did you choose your college of choice? I've been thinking of going to Hillsdale College for some time now. I maintain good grades, this quarter I only got 2 B's 1 in Biology and the other in.....I forget, but it wasn't math I promise you lol.

Hillsdale offers scholarships based on academics, fine arts, extracurricular involvement and sports. All my high school career so far (I'm almost a junior) I've maintained good grades. For 2 years in a row I've done debate and I might do wrestling for the other 2. I may get a scholarship, because I need every help I can get to afford the cost.

Hillsdale is kinda unique because it doesn't take government money in any shape or form. They're a diverse crowd and I find only one problem with attending that school. They're out of my state. :( How do you afford that? It seems so expensive to go out of state to go to college, because of the room, board, and college price itself. Anyone got any ideas?

I haven't even learned how to drive yet, so that's a problem too. I'm going to finish driving this summer so at least I can get that out of the way. But a $6-7 per hour job is not going to pay for this college. I need help.

17, I wish I was 13 and I might as well start now anyways. Better sooner than later.

@Niner
I promised myself that whatever I would do to avoid debt I would because I believe it's against my religion to get into debt. I would die in ROTC probablly but scholarships are probablly my best bet.

Oh, okay. So you're in Grade 11 then.

Anyway, I figured out what I wanted to do with my life, picked a number of Universities that offer the courses I need, and before I decided I was going to come back for half a year, was going to send applications in to all of them.

Probablly shouldn't I'm thinking of going into law, and to do that I'd have to study American law not Canadian law. Why do they give free college for everyone?

@Marlow
Actually, I'm still a sophmore because my mom started me a year late. So that means I'm 1 year older than everyone else in my grade haha :D. How did you find really good universities that appealed to you? Google search?

There's no such thing as Canadian or American law, it's called Common Law and it's the law of nearly every ex-British colonies.

I'm going to law as well.

And we have "free college" because that's just how our system works. We pay slightly higher taxes, but in the end it's worth it.

Uhhhh, I don't mean to sound like a prick or anything but you will eventualy go into debt if you buy a car or house. Unless you buy it by using cash all upfront you will be in debt. Credit cards are basically debt too.

That's why I'm going to rent an apartment until I can afford to buy a house when I get rich as a lawyer. Then I'll drive my parents car that I'll get when they pass on.

There are some laws that are specific to America though and I'd probablly be better off learning about law in my homeland than travelling all the way over to a foreign country where I no nothing of the people, culture, or their second langugae.

I thought their 2nd language was French? As I said though, it's tough going to an enitrelly different place where you know no one.

I might go into USA environmental law.

The only French speaking province is Quebec. The other provinces only have small french-speaking communities.

So really, it's no problem if your only language is english.

BTW go into Corporate Law. That's where I'm going, and that's where all the money is at.

Open days, Prospectuses? Do you have them over there? They are really helpful, going and looking at the Uni, 'in the flesh', and the town around.

Jeez I'm seventeen and I'm a senior.

Anyway, I'm attending UC Davis, a college I chose because A) it is a very well regarded school in many different academic areas, B) its location and atmosphere appeal to me and C) it is cheaper to live there than a lot of other UCs.

In deciding where I wanted to go, I asked a lot of college students about their experience at different colleges, visited campuses, and talked with the school's guidance counselor. For me, I wasted interested in any one particular field so I chose a school I thought would be fine for any field I chose to enter. If there's something you particularly want to study and you have your heart set on, ask your guidance counselor about what schools offer good programs in those areas.

Also, apply for every scholarship and form of financial aid you can.

Yeah, for most colleges they do have them. I'll have to figure out when they are and whatnot in Hillsdale.
