It’s still someone’s right to make that joke, even if you don’t agree with it and even if it may be generally accepted as being in bad taste. This is what it means to live in a free democratic society. You do not have the right to not be offended.

Totally agree, everyone has the right to voice their opinion and/or take whatever course of action they choose, and nobody has the right to condemn or criticize them for it. That's one of the fundamental privileges every person has. It's partly the reason why this always plays in the back of my mind on a regular basis

This. It may morally be wrong and in bad taste or whatever, but they still have a right to say it.

Personally, I'd find it would depend on the joke. Some, would function as a coping mechanism. Others are just flat out offensive that should repulse decent thinking people.

Certainly, we have the right to say jokes in bad taste. We also have the right to torture goldfish that we own. However, Mullun's was questioning to what degree humor should exist after someone's death which is a different concept than the legality of it.

I think the question is more of audience. I can make some pretty dark and vile jokes, but they are around people who will find humor in them. I don't think just declaring all things are fair game accomplishes much because people have the right to be offended. You have the right to tell them your joke, but knowing they will have a certain reaction is to me like trying to serve meet to a vegetarian.

Humour is subjective, this question is irrelevant.

While humor is subjective, there is some fairly significant agreement on the appropriateness of some jokes.

And as it has been said before, appropriateness aside, people still have a right to make such jokes.

Which is why the question is irrelevant.

Except that the question was not whether we have the right to make certain jokes but whether we should. Of course, our senses of right and wrong are somewhat different but as I said before, there is considerable consensus among non-sociopaths.

After all, I'd imagine few people would honestly get offended about a pokemon video showing Steve Irwin vs a Stingray. However, just about everyone would get offended by a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. with feces smeared on it in racist slurs.

Which again, is subjective, some people find that sort of thing hilarious, others would describe it as distasteful, I personally couldn't care less.

It's subjective, the question of the thread is irrelevant.

Saying that racism is bad is subjective. However, that doesn't mean that we don't condemn racism.
