I might suggest looking at Merchant Sealift Command as an example. They have differebt people with ranks/paygrades and are an auxilary organization for the United Dtates Navy but with some tweaking yoy can make it nore of a private company. They have some characteristics you might want to take away from.
I think what we'll stick with is three ranks for the entire faction. On top of that there will be 10+ medals or insignias that a member can earn for service to the guild.
The reason I'd like to shy away from ranks is that this isn't really a militaristic faction, sure we have to deal with pirates and natives; but we don't wage war. And in the real world there aren't ranks, there are job titles. You do a good job you get a better job title and more money. In the guild you do a good job you get a new insignia and a higher pay. Trading is essentially a trade, just like carpentry or HVAC. Those jobs really only have three 'ranks' apprentice, journeymen, and master. So that's the model I'll be using. The medals and insignias will be extra perks that a member could use to 'pull rank' and prove that they have the capabilities to lead during certain situations.
@fyremage We still don't even have five members....so maybe not a challenge for The Exchange quite yet.
