That means you're of Irish heritage. That doesn't make you Irish, though.

Thank you.

Irish immigrants used to call it the old country but noone does anymore, which is the point I was making.

I think I know my own country.

Dublin is a dump it just looks any other city, Cork is no better and they're bitter against Dub's because they're devout in their ignorant belief that they should be the capital.

I have relatives in the tree from Greece, Finland, England, America, Germany and I believe Japan as well, but I'm full blooded Irish, i've had this debate/arguement online I don't know how many times, mainly while playing MMO's or on random forums because I'm usually the only irish member/player.

The only thing special about us is our neutrality, the battles/terrorism in Northern Ireland which is actually apart of the United Kingdom and we have a unique culture, plus we have varying accents, I barely have an Irish accent but that's because of the area I'm from.

I wouldn't waste your time coming over tbh.

By plane.....

****ing hell.

I don't ****ing know.

Edit: I do know but was blinded as I am everytime Cailist does something stupid.

You spend a week on a boat or seven hours on a plane.

That why.

Best answer and reasoning I've seen in this thread. If you don't follow this advice, then I feel very sorry for you.

What part of Ireland are you from, out of curiousity?

I've moved around the area of Dublin both in and outside the centre. Originally from Manor street which is near the city centre, living in an area outside of Dublin right now. My university is in Dublin though.

Uh... dude, exactly. Your ancestors. What do you think 'heritage' means?

This is like me saying I'm a Brit. My mom was born in England, but I'm still Canadian.

Boils my blood.

Is bad over here when you have people who use all the benefits of being British but claim to be from some shithole they would never set foot in.

So? I'd rather live in Ireland than America. It's like my second home dude. Every research project opportunity I've gotten I've chosen Ireland. What I'm confused about is what's the difference between having your heritage be Irish vs. you actually being Irish yourself? Is it LIVING THUR?

Yes for GOD'S SAKE!

My Paternal Grandparents emigrated from Germany but you don't see me going around hailing it as my Fatherland and saying I'm German.

You are of Irish DESCENT....IT IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING IRISH! You would be IRISH if you were born and lived in Ireland!

You've never been to Ireland and it's your second home? Right.

I love it when yanks go off on how much they want to go " home to alba's shores" and how much better it is there than it is here, yadda yadda"

typically they have never set foot there, nor has anyone in their family in hundreds of years, and all they know of Scotland is from TV, and highland games...

I try to set them straight on how it's nothing like the fantasy they live in. It's not really that different...except we have much better train systems, and our train sandwiches beat anything made in an american diner... :P
