The land itself is pretty I guess and we have had a lot of notable writers, musicians and actors that have come from here and as a result their birthplaces have cashed in on it. Seriously, Patrick Kavanagh was an Irish Poet, there's a gift shop and cafe ten metres from his grave.

If you want to see the country side, the book of kells, trinity college, temple bar, the old jails and the docklands, then by all means come on over. But that's really it.

If you like discussing Shakespeare, Science Fiction and French Actresses while smoking and drinking then by all means go ahead.

Excellent, I do get rather tired of the swill they serve us here. I do miss my days back in Cambridge, the servant boy would always know how to prepare my drinks before a big fox hunt.

I was an Oxford man myself, but I wouldn't mind joining you Cambridge chaps on a trip to Ireland. We could finally reassert our rule over those IRA rapscallions...and bother Kaeb.:CSly

I got cheated the last time I went to Europe for training exercise in Grafenwoehr, Germany. We weren't even allowed to leave the installation. It was pretty much being on America in Europe.

I'll never understand that part of American Culture, noone who is born there ever settles on being just American, they have to trace their heritage to every bloody line of immigrants that ever existed.

That's why people get bothered by it. A bunch of American tourists bumped into me on my way to Uni last week and asked me for directions, halfway through they just burst out in the strongest Tennessee accents I've ever heard ''We're Irish too!!''

No you're not you AIDS ridden *****.

Well most people from EU or other countries know where they're from. They're descended from a long line of Irishmen or Englishmen. Whereas in NA we're all a bunch of immigrants who feel the need to find out our origins.

In my mind, if you're born in the country, that's your origin right there, everything else is just genetics, and if Americans want to trace there heritage, then they need to realise that we're all bloody Africans and then move on.

I do agree, I'm a Canadian through and through. I love hockey and think it's a great sport (no matter what a sometimes pompous gentleman can say), I drink Maple Syrup as though it was water. I don't wear hats I wear toques. For weddings if I'm not in a tuxedo of denim then I'm not in a real tuxedo! Loonies and toonies are currency! Polar bears are pets, and we travel by dogsled rather than cars...but I digress.

You can't know where you're going until you know where you've been. Though if you're going to be a twit and claim to be Irish then just stop.

People want to be Irish so much because a major percentage of the United States, including me, has some Irish in them. Interesting history, too.

Visited Ireland a while back. I enjoyed the transit, more than anything. Just stare out the window with a sketchbook and sketch/write till I ran out of graphite.

And i find nothing wrong with tracing roots. Doing it for the sake of travel is one thing, but visiting Scotland was very informative and they seemed pleased that "a young lad like me" took so much pride in his history. I'm not claiming that "i'm scottish" because a family of Maxwells sailed to America in the late 1800's, but I wanted to know what "being a Maxwell" entailed, and I found a great love for haggis, neeps, and tatties - best appetizer ever.

RE what constantine said about why so many american's have this compulsion to track out roots, the US was a country founded by immigrants. A "true american" would be of Native blood, but that is really hard to find thanks to the bullshit over the past ever. The US is a young country with not a lot of rich culture to lean on, as our culture is the result of a 200 year old melting pot. Some people aren't content with the 200 years we learn every single year in History class, so that is why they trace their roots. It was more of a spiritual thing for me. I had a loss of identity after a family crisis and was in a bad place. Whether I am scottish or not, experiencing the culture and learning the history of my Clan and actually meeting with a group of other fellow Clansmen brought me out of that funk. So no, I don't call myself a Scotsman, I call myself an American, but I am proud of my Scottish blood and I wouldn't trade that week for all of King Solomon's treasure.
