Caris' trap was sprung and so was Varyn's. The Champion was too focused on his own attack to respond to the changed attack from the Jedi.

For Varyn's part, the punch had just been a ploy. It struck, and its strike meant that Varyn's deactivated lightsaber was wedged almost into the man's armpit. He activated the blade where it would spring to life, carving through the swinging arm at the shoulder. The continued movement from the swing combined with Varyn twisting his own wrist would mean the arm would almost certainly be taken off at the shoulder or perhaps holding on by a few pieces of unbroken skin.

But it came with a cost. Varyn's step into and pivoting with the punch meant that he was able to outpace the Jedi's blade to an extent, but even so, it wasn't enough. The Jedi's saber caught his side, digging several inches into his belly, scalding half his liver before it would be - hopefully - cut off (literally) by Varyn's attack.

In the event that by some miracle the Jedi evaded his attack, Varyn's life would be forfeit. The blade would pass cleanly through his body and out the other side. In the far, far more likely event that the Jedi's arm came off, Varyn was still in bad shape. A massive gash in his side with excruciating pain and half a liver and probably kidney gone meant that Varyn would fall to the ground, sabers falling from his hands as he clutched at his side, doubled over in pain and simply hoping that someone would find him in time to get him to a medbay. Either way, the battle was no longer in Varyn's hands.

Contrary to what the Jedi Master may believe, launching a kick from the ground with absolutely zero leverage would not, in fact, be able to shatter much of anything. Breaking a few bones meant that the Jedi wasn’t lightning fast to react either, the agonizing pain shooting through him. Altair saw the man’s leg draw up and the tiefling knew he didn’t have time to avoid the snap kick. The Force coursed through him, his Matukai teachings coming in as he dropped down to one knee probably the way Clove wished for one day. The Force channeled through his body, bearing down as the kick connected against the thick muscles of his right thigh. It hurt like hell and it would severely bruise, but he couldn’t call himself Matukai if he never took Force imbued kicks or strikes before. The Jedi Master was trying to play at Altair’s game and it would work out as well as Altair attempting to saber duel.

As Altair dropped down, the Force also charged through his right fist as he slammed it down at the same time. This was a Force imbued punch, enhanced with the glove and also had the benefit of his body weight dropping down at the same time. The combined result would be that fist slamming down into the side of the man’s leg where there was no plate. The fibula, the weaker bone that laterally faced out would snap instantly, and the blow would also likely crack through to the tibia.

The Matukai fighter would break his enemy bit by bit if he had to, his other arm still up to defend against any other blows.

Yesit was over. Caris watched his saber cut deeply into the Sith. Burning flesh searing away. His mind already turning to the Demon Prince. Finally. His saber suddenly faltered. His arm falling away. Huh. That was strange. He felt his arm moving but watched his hand blade streak towards the ground. A puzzled looked spread across his face.

The pain came next.

A pain no words could really describe. A suffering he had never felt before. A sudden inexorable loss…and yet…for Caris…there was a deeper hurt. Failure. The Sith before him was a tattered pile at his feet. Victory in a sense. But he had failed again. Again! The Demon Prince stood battling with Reinhart. Just as Caris had faced him so many times. Varyn was right about one thing. The humiliations of defeat stacked atop one another seeded a dark place in his soul. A place no Shadow was meant to touch.

He screamed. That pain, that stench of failure, flowing from his remaining hand. Whatever strength he had left mingled with his suffering to hammer forth at the Demond Prince’s head. He truly had no goal other than to hurt…to make someone feel his pain. It lasted but a few moments before Caris’ eyes closed and he joined Varyn in unconsciousness. If he was rescued, if he survived, Caris would have a reckoning. The Justiciars would have him because there was no other choice. He would not betray his oaths. He would not betray his people, but he was not the same man.

Not after today…not ever.

Reinhart's body had been curled inward in preparation to sit up with his left-hand lightsaber facing the Sith, the Force rushing through him in a moment of desperate counter-offense. As the Sith dropped down and brought himself closer, Reinhart's upper body abruptly hauled up from the ground enough to bring himself within lightsaber distance.

The Paladin's left-hand blade snapped forward to drop vertically into the Sith's right shoulder. A fast-approaching plasma blade would with luck draw the other man's attention away from the Paladin's other, more underhanded strike. In concert, his right-hand blade ignited forward to thrust through the Sith's abdomen. This worsened Grimm's right humerus injury with a wet pop that left that arm completely useless afterward, unable to even lift its own weight. His right-hand lightsaber would slip free to the ground from numb fingers.

The Demon Prince's punch would strike just before the lightsabers, smashing Reinhart's left leg and snapping bones into a nasty compound fracture joined by a roar of agony. Blinded by the white-hot pain of multiple broken bones, only momentum and determined will would carry Grimm's attacks through. He could only pray, with only one of the other man's arms ready to guard, that at least one blade struck true.

Regardless, Reinhart couldn't keep fighting through several serious injuries and intended only to drag the Empire's fearsome Commander down into the mud along with him. He had no capacity in those split seconds to notice Caris' mental attack nor how it was tinged with darkness, no time for reflection in their most desperate hour. Just the last, defiant attempt to smite evil from a faraway Paladin of the Adamite Tower.

Altair’s punch found purchase and crushed through bone, that familiar crack resounding. At the same time he was hit with a flood of emotions and pain from the other Jedi. Unfortunately for Caris (@Valen Pelora ), negative emotions only fed into the Dark Side, and the pouring of emotion only fueled what drove Altair. He felt a surge in the Force bolstered by the dark emotions, enhancing his connection and helping him reinforce.

The Jedi Master abruptly managed to curl himself up to slice out with both sabers, an extraordinary feat considering how he was positioned and also the fact that his leg was shattering. Nevertheless, the tiefling was caught slightly off guard. Because Altair had been staring directly at the Jedi, his left arm came up abruptly to collide against the right saber to prevent the stab into his torso. There was no avoiding the left saber which began to cut through his shoulder. Altair gritted through the pain, but he wouldn’t suffer for long. The trajectory would be interrupted by several things - the first being the sudden break of the leg bones which would send a jolt of pain through the Jedi and weaken the sit up he was doing.

The second was that Altair’s gauntlet had finished its cooldown. This meant it absorbed the right saber's energy and Altair fired it directly back. The energy bolt would fire right into the Jedi’s chest at close range.

Grimm hadn't expected the strange leather Matukai to also be capable of redirecting the power of a Sunfire sword. But then again, there wasn't much in the way of coherent thought through the pain of broken bones. Abdominal muscles tensed in ways he didn't want, drawing his sit-up shorter than he'd intended but still enough for that initial strike down into the Sith's shoulder. Maybe it was enough.

The Demon Prince rebounded a bolt of lightsaber plasma that would pass through Grimm's chest with little to no resistance, burning a smoking hole through it. Paladin Grimm's lightsaber whipped left, but with his torso falling back it'd just buzz harmlessly through the air somewhere in front of the Sith's helmet as he collapsed, beaten body failing him utterly.

Then Paladin Grimm fell back into the mud with the clatter of steel, smoke curling upward from the ashen blow torn through his chest. Deep brown eyes, dark as river stones, looked up at the battle above. They reflected the sight of Jedi craft evacuating the temple, thus far unhindered by other Imperial forces. Grimm would at least die the way he'd lived, fighting in defense of others who took up worthier skills than war.

So this is my end, Reinhart thought. Was it enough?

He saw blaster fire ring back and forth still all around, neither side giving any an inch more than the other could take. His vision went black, and he saw the tall grass fields of his family home on Weik. A hand parted the grass. Every limb felt nothing, yet still, the grass blades tickled bare feet and fingers and the wind brushed through his hair with familiar comfort. It'd been so long since he'd been back home.

An unseasonably cool breeze blew across the battlefield, bringing with it the impossible scents of fallen leaves and bark from ancient oak trees, neither of which had ever existed on Yavin IV. Amidst the dark wheat fields only he could see, Reinhart saw a shape. A tall man, eyes the green of verdant leaves twinkling with distant starlight and gazing at him with somber kindness. The man offered his hand. Reinhart took it.

And so an end it was, at least for now. Reinhart blacked out and he saw no more.

Altair stepped back and exhaled, pain surging through his entire body from the fight. He was limping, his shoulder was badly gashed, but he was alive. He looked over and his eyes widened at the sight of Varyn. Altair half limped over, plopping down to check on the other man. He had fought with all his might and almost gave his life. In fact, if the tiefling didn’t check for a pulse, he’d be convinced the Champion was dead.

“Fuck, why don’t I know the creepy Force powers..” He muttered to himself, thinking about how useful it would have been to drain the other passed out Jedi to heal Varyn. In the end, he quickly dialed his comlink to contact Star Guardians because he knew they’d be on the scene and at least be in touch with Jedi as well and could help coordinate, “Hey, this is Imperial Commander Din, I sent you my coordinates. I need two Jedi evac’d off planet, one Sith is critically injured-” He looked over at his opponent and grimaced, “One Jedi and one Sith both critically injured. Just come get our asses.”

Altair switched off and sat there next to Varyn, guarding him in case any other Jedi or soldier decided to come start a fight. In the meantime, he used the Force to collect all the sabers from their opponents (and the kickass horn from his enemy). He was going to collect souvenirs after that fight.

The tiefling switched onto Imperial channels, “Everyone, the fight’s done. Allow evacuations to proceed and occupy the temple and all military buildings immediately. Do not, I repeat, do not stop anyone from leaving if they wish, but they are not permitted to run away with any data or artifacts.”
