Plaeree, Devaron

Rain wasn't sure why the Jedi were here, or the Guardians for that matter. The Kiffu Guardians had always been content with keeping their resources focused on Kiffu and Kiffex, what happened beyond their borders had never been of concern to them. On top of that they had no official jurisdiction on or obligation to Devaron, the planet was a part of the New Republic after all. Other than a close proximity to Kiffu there was no reason for Kiffar forces to be here.

But yet, here they were. Doing what, she did not know, though the Guardian who was going to meet them at the spaceport was supposed to bring them up to speed. Sitting cross-legged on the floor, her bag full of supplies besides her, she waited for their contact to arrive, hoping it wasn't someone she knew. Dressed in Jedi robes, she was sure she would be at the receiving end of many a joke for going all hermit on them.

But, nothing she could do about that, she was a Jedi now, and had to act the role. That and the robes were really comfortable, definitely much more so than the Guardian armor she saw on the figure approaching in the distance.

OOC: Open to one or two more Jedi, preferably at least one Knight or higher ranked character.

It is a time of Galactic turmoil. The abolition of the Sector Rangers has left Republic worlds defenseless, and a new sickness is spreading on Devaron that has locals in a state of frenzy.

Unexpectedly, the Kiffu Guardians have offered to help, insisting on Jedi presence in the investigation.

The Jedi, once hated across the Galaxy, have been called upon yet again to do their ancestral duty, to be Knights of the Republic.

More Padawans. He could not escape them. Try as he might, Caris was haunted by an endless stream of teens. It was his nightmare. He had once been one of the Order’s finest Shadows. A man who had saved millions of lives on Ithor. Who stood against the Darkisde at all turns. He’d been something. Yavin changed all that. There were days still Caris could hardly force himself from bed. The weight of his failure so heavy on his soul. Those were the bad days…but they came less and less. He was in control. That tiny dark space in the back of his mind was only a whisper.

The former Shadow was finally given leave of Ithor. His training with Vida went well which apparently mean he was subject to even greater annoyance. More children. The Grandmaster forbid the Padawans from acting alone. A wise decision…until it forced him to babysit. Caris wore the robes he hadn’t donned since Yavin. It was a strange feeling walking in them again. Taking a deep breath, he flexed the fingers on his cybernetic arm. Walking swiftly through the space port to find the others. That was easy enough. Caris just shook his head.

“Well, don’t you look the part.” He stretched the hand again. He was still getting used to it. “I’m your babysitter today. Who are we waiting on?” He didn’t see anyone else at the moment. That was a good thing. It gave him some time to stead his nerves. He was meant to be the adult in the room. The shield in case anything tipped sideways. The only problem was he had no idea what he’d do if it came to a fight. He wasn’t sure that part of him worked anymore. No one else needed to know that.

Focused on figuring out who their Kiffar guide would be, Rain missed the arrival of the other Jedi, and scrambled to get to her feet as she heard him speak. Thinking, in her confusion, that he was offering her a hand to help her to her feet, she reached out just as he pulled his hand back to continue stretch the not actually offered limb. Blinking with mouth open as she finally realized what had happened, she quickly pulled back her hand, instead dropping it to the ground to push herself to her feet, hoping that he hadn't noticed what had just transpired.

"Umm, yeah," she said, as she looked down at her outfit, "dress to impress and all that." She brushed off some dust that had rubbed onto her clothes from the ground, and once she deemed herself to be presentable she held out a hand towards the Knight. "I'm Rain...err, Padawan Moraine Bashere, pleased to met you."

Before she could say much more, they were joined by a new arrival, a tall Kiffar female in Guardian armor. "Jedi," she greeted them curtly, giving Rain a glance and a disapproving frown, "I am Kinara Vel. Come, there is a speeder waiting for us. We can speak on the way." Not waiting for a response, she turned and started walking, leading the way to a speeder, immediately jumping into the pilot's seat. If the Jedi followed and joined her the speeder would spring to life and begin flying on a path taking them out of the city.

"Two weeks ago we received multiple reports of a sickness spreading through villages on Kiffex," she began without prompt, "an investigation by Guardians on station lead to a group of off-worlders who were somehow poisoning the wells in the area. We do not know how they were doing it, but we managed to chase them out of the system and the symptoms stopped. We thought the matter settled, till similar reports began showing up here. Same symptoms, same population demographics being hit."

She stopped, turning the speeder off the clear path and into a forest, towards the first of the villages that had been hit. Rain spoke up into the silence that followed. "That's why you're here," if Kinara had eyes in the back of her head she would see Rain glaring arrows at her, "you never followed up, never reported the incidents to anyone. And now its happening here."

The Guardian ignored her, but did not deny anything. Instead she turned to Caris. "We believe there might be Force users involved, that is why we need your help. If the pattern follows, we might start seeing the first fatalities within a matter of days."

“None of that.” He shook her hand with the good one. “You call me Caris and I’ll call you Rain.” He’d never been one for formality. Even less since Yavin. There really was no point. A fancy title wouldn’t stop a Sith from ramming a blade in his guts. They barely had time for pleasantries before the Guardian showed up. Now, she was more his speed. Curt and disapproving. Right up his alley. He might actually enjoy this mission. Caris followed and listened quietly. Taking his seat in the speeder.

It seemed the fairly standard stuff. Mysterious sickness, evil off worlders. The usual Jedi fodder. It rarely ever amounted to much, but the Guardians were well known. They weren’t some backwater planetary defense force. If they really needed help, the problem must have been serious. He ran his tongue across his teeth. Turning to look at Kinara.

“You know, I’m sure this one…” He thumbed back at Rain. “Can be annoying but she has a point.” Caris shrugged. “Not answering, seems even worse.” He might ignore Padawans. That was his right as a Jedi Knight. The outside world couldn’t get away with it. Rain probably would grate on the former Shadow. There was no reason Kinara needed to know. “We’ll look and we’ll look closely but we need to know everything you found before and why it was pushed under a rock." He didn’t really care if he made people uncomfortable. That was the thing about nearly dying. All those worries really seemed less consequential. He wanted to find answers. Do the work the right way, and hopefully earn enough leash from the Council to be left the fuck alone.
